Great! Reminds me of Popcorn Messaging (http://www.popcornmap.com) and Ripple (http://ripplechat.io). Hyperlocal messaging is definitely a hot space!

I was just going to mention those as well, @brnt. I would add TenTwenty and Shortwave to the list as well. Interesting to see so many apps converging on location-based communication. Why do you think that is, @ggiaco?

Spiral is a mobile chat/forum that moves around with you and lets you connect with people based on proximity, without being constrained to your existing networks and walled gardens. Meant to work great at events, but built as a flexible communication tool.

Thanks for the comments guys! We're trying to build a forum that is location-first makes it easy to go beyond the walled gardens we have created through the last wave of social apps. I think it should be easy to communicate with our neighbors, people in our college community outside our program, and the organic communities that form at events. etc. In a way, we want to bring the town square back. This sort of communication becomes much more interesting as soon as pretty much *everyone* has a smartphone. That could be partly behind the interest in this area, though I can't comment on the motivations of the other apps you mention. We've got a pretty aggressive release schedule, so hope you'll keep checking us out and share your thoughts. @rrhoover @brnt
