I actually believe we had Direct Messaging as a feature a while ago but it was rarely used.
How did you build this messenger app? Is it run on something special?

Yes, I heard from the PH Live @rrhoover gave that there was a beta that didn't work out so well because of execution and PH didn't want it to turn into LinkedIn Messages. To make it relevant, I included a few contextual features like "recent interactions from PH." I'm hoping to add more of these features to make it seamless between PH and PM.
It is just a simple iOS messaging app using the Product Hunt API: api.producthunt.com/v1/docs
I used it for authentication and some basic user details and the rest is built off of the messenger.
