Hey All, Thanks Justin for hunting us and being one of our first customers! Hey Product Hunters! Quang, CEO and cofounder of Plato (ex Birdly YC W16) . At Plato, we're on a mission to help Engineers to become better Engineering Leaders. We built this product to solve a real pain we had ourselves in the past. Companies tend to promote the best engineers in … See more

Sounds like a powerful training and retention tool for engineering talent. What is the value prop to the mentors for volunteering their time? I presume it generates some recruiting leverage.
Quang HOANG@qhoang09 · CEO @ Birdly
@kevrmoore Hey! Mentors have all kind of incentives, but what we saw is that they already want to dedicate time to help other. But they don't want to spend time on: 1) Scheduling and rescheduling calls with mentees: We take care of all the scheduling and rescheduling for you. 2) Spend time with irrelevant mentees you won't be able to help: we take care of … See more

This is great, there's no real platform for engineering leaders.
Quang HOANG@qhoang09 · CEO @ Birdly
@tschellenbach Thanks, feel free to give it a try, the first calls are for free

great idea! would love to see some public facing content as well if the mentors ever generate articles under your site (meaning for folks not specifically looking for the mentoring)
Quang HOANG@qhoang09 · CEO @ Birdly
@passingnotes We have a lot of contents from those folks about various Engineering Management topics. It's not public yet, but we'll build it soon!
David Tran@dtran320 · Co-Founder & CTO, PRX
Have had super helpful conversations with engineering mentors through Plato. Especially wanted to shoutout @nclarksf for a really valuable conversation. Thanks for making it happen, Quang and team! I've learned a lot about how to think about my own time management as an engineering leader and how to tackle specific challenges around recruiting and building a… See more

Very interesting idea and congrats on the launch! I especially like that Plato is directly integrated within Slack. Does the conversation with mentors also happen in Slack? When you say conversation, is it a phone call or chat base only? Do we talk to a different mentor depending on what problem we're currently facing or are we getting a dedicated one from t… See more

@mattaussaguel [insights from a mentor] both via chat and phone and you are able to be paired with different mentor's depending on the challenge you are facing
Quang HOANG@qhoang09 · CEO @ Birdly
@mattaussaguel We originally began with problem solving matching. Now, we can do long term mentors too! It's a use-case that many of you asked and many mentors like to do it too. Usually, we try to do the perfect matching because a long-term mentor is much more engaging for both of them. Usually, we tend to organize some calls with multiple mentors about a… See more

As a mentor, it's been great to be able to invest in other Engineering leaders as well as be surrounded with other industry leaders to continue to grow myself. Highly recommended!
Quang HOANG@qhoang09 · CEO @ Birdly
@jeremywight Thanks for the heads up and for being a Mentor Jeremy. We missed you yesterday at the event!
Jeremy Wight@jeremywight · Product Manager, InVisionApp
@qhoang09 Thanks! Currently en-route to Portland. I'm sure it was awesome though! Hopefully next time!

This seems like a great product although I don't directly manage anyone. I'll also say that managing != leadership as I feel I've been a leader in various positions throughout my career, but I usually did not directly manage others. Would anyone happen to know of a similar service for senior technical contributors who'd like to transition into leadership ro… See more
