@jlippiner @chubert btw we can offer you very cheap roaming data plans in every country if actual.

I'm extremely skeptical that the battery will last months because of the small form factor. According to their page the battery "...will last for anywhere from 3 weeks to months depending on your settings." I'd expect the vast majority of use cases to be on or below the lower end of that estimate. How long will it last if you put it on a bicycle as pictured and commute 30 minutes twice a day with that bike every day? Intuition tells me less than a week.

Can you guys add a constant charging solution if you want to put it in a vehicle for example.

Having used Tagg (acquired by Whistle) to track my outdoor cats for years, and dealing with recharging it every 3 days, and knowing they also promise at least 1-2 weeks of battery life and fall miserably short of that in real life usage, I can safely say: Ping, I'll believe it when I see it.

In theory, a perfect device for anyone with kids, so long as you can hide it well enough that a Bad Hombre doesn't find it before your kid can push the button. But, is anyone here actually technical enough to validate whether this is potentially legit? If Pebble ran out of money trying to make their little dot devices with a big deal and a lot of experience, I am hugely skeptical this team can pull it off. There's in fact not much said about who they are or why they have the expertise. Lastly, talking to some hardware friends and looking at the Ping timeline, it's hard to believe their industrial design process just started six months ago, and they are already expecting to ship the device by this summer. Them using Indiegogo vs Kickstarter is also a signal in the negative direction, since KS validates the product for "reality" while IG still allows waporvare. All-in-all, sounds like a great product, but will it be?

@kaitlynwitman Same here. I haven't checked bags in 5+ years because airlines have lost my luggage twice. This would provide a lot of peace of mind.

@ecwilson @kaitlynwitman But would this actually solve the problem? Wouldn't it just let you know where it's lost, not prevent it from getting lost.

@joshuapinter If you know where it is then its not lost ;-)

@greg_donaldson Ha. I thought somebody was going to call me out on that. I guess what I mean is that even if you know where your luggage is, it's still effectively lost. It's not like it's underneath a couch cushion or something. :)
Eric Wilson
@ecwilson · Product Lead & Co-founder, Pro.com
@joshuapinter @greg_donaldson All true. It won't solve the problem of not having your luggage when you need it most (when you get to where you're going). But you will be able to recover it in due time.

@ecwilson @joshuapinter @greg_donaldson Yeah one time my backpack got stolen from the airport tram that connected terminals. I used Find My iPad to call in the cops, but they went to the wrong house (maybe). Then, the thief turned off the iPad. He even had the nerve to call me and ransom me for it! I doubt they'd know how to turn off a Ping. And I bet it's more accurate than Find my iPad...

Looks nice! How often do I need to recharge it?
Matthew Bleistern
@bleistern · Founder at Hynt
@oleg_kubyshkin the crowdfunding page says it works for up to 3 months between charges. It also says Ping wins on battery life in comparison to Tile, which is false. Tile lasts a year. Granted, it's Bluetooth only. I just don't like it when things are over-simplified in marketing to the point of being incorrect or misleading. Nonetheless, I am very impressed by the size of the device and I hope it succeeds!
Joshua Lippiner
@jlippiner · President, Noctivity
@bleistern sorry about that. Where do we say we beat Tile? Tile definitely lasts longer but it's a short range Bluetooth locator. We have longer battery life then almost all other god solutions we know of on the market. Thanks!

@jlippiner @bleistern he comparison chart shows that Ping beats Tile, hence the confusion.

@trevin @bleistern man you're right. We're fixing that ASAP. Sorry.

@jlippiner no sweat. Thanks for making it right. My suggestion would be just to change the language. Maybe have a "rechargeable" line item separately from a "battery life" line. Anyway looks like a great product! (Edited Feb 6th)

I'm out of US, been missing such simple trackers for years. Even thought of buying kind of smart watches for my kids, but almost all of them suck or made for US only. Hope you'll make them!

@aaronmckeehan How small is small enough? Personally, I don't mind the size, it's the battery life that seems to be the limiting factor to using these on more items.

Looks nice, but I'm another person amazingly cynical of the battery life claims considering cellular and the tiny size of the battery. Would love to be proven wrong, but going to have to see actual tests to back it up.

@jlippiner Will this work like a SPOT GPS or similar products for outdoor wilderness tracking?
Joshua Lippiner
@jlippiner · President, Noctivity
@aub I believe SPOT is a communicator. We are a simple, elegant locating device so quite a bit different. Take a look at http://pinggps.com to learn more.
Aubrey Johnson
@aub · Design / iOS Dev http://aubrey.me
@jlippiner I think the GEN3 Spot is also a locator (it is not a two way communicator). Maybe the answer to this will help me - Does Ping work without a cellular connection? Does it utilize Globalstar satellite, Iridium or COSPAS/SARSAT for GPS? If so, you've also just made the best priced/featured/lightest GPS safety locator on the planet and probably every backpacker/hiker will be all over this. I realize that this is a locator and not a tracker from your FAQ, this is how some of these lower-fi GPS safety devices operate too. I still can't believe it is only 1oz! So awesome
Joshua Lippiner
@jlippiner · President, Noctivity
@aub :) Thanks for the clarification. Unfortunately we do not use any satellite communication systems, only cell, though we are using FOUR different cell networks for communication to help ensure deliverability.

Curious what you'll be able to deliver. I've been going through a number of Tiles and even though they've definitely saved my life a few times, the price/convenience wasn't worth it. Small weird thing is that you mention the battery life being up to 5 months in the video but up to 3 months in the visual on Indiegogo. Which one is it? @jlippiner
Joshua Lippiner
@jlippiner · President, Noctivity
@freekgille Thanks for the note. Like anything with a battery, it depends on settings and usage. Here's an article with more details - https://support.pinggps.com/hc/e...-
