as a designer, i love well-crafted html emails. but study and A/B test i read says, in order to avoid the algorithms that put you in the spam and "promotions" sections, plain text emails are the way. they're much less sales-y and feel more personal, as well.

@thejeremycarson yes :) Also the good practice is to send both plain text and html versions. Many providers, such as MailChimp, CampaignMonitor or SendGrid allows to send text mail with html.

@thejeremycarson I agree, but in my opinion, everyone who works with email marketing should know all options to make a succesfull campaign. Plain text is a good way, but I don't think it will work in every situation and for every brand/company. For me plain text works best when they contrast with regular good-looking designed newsletters, only in that case I feel it like a personal appeal.

@thejeremycarson Having worked at an ESP at one point, I can totally appreciate bullet-proof email templates that are gorgeous. I think it's important to keep in mind however, that as much as good design is important in facilitating trust w/ users, emails are generally driven by marketing-focused metrics. A lot of times, this will be counter-intuitive to what many of use consider "good design". The danger with templates is that whoever designed those templates did not consider your business context, and what actually converts users. A big sans-serif header taking up 80% of the visible window is beautiful, but may devastate your conversion. TLDR, emails are a necessary evil and do your own testing to get it right. You can't rely on design alone to increase engagement and conversion.
