People often think of Augmented Reality as being purely visual but it has the capability of influencing all of our senses, including what we hear. Can't wait to clone Morgan Freeman's voice and troll my friends on the phone. 😁

@rrhoover Was excited to try it, but saw it is not available for use yet. Wondering if maybe pre-launch products should be listed separately from the main featured products of the day?

@adammash @rrhoover I concur, as this is pre-launch, it leads to some disappointment that's it's unavailable.

@rrhoover "AR has the capability of influencing all of our senses.." That's definitely a quote to remember! Yeah - bummed I couldn't try it out yet! Exciting though!!

Mix that with this. Who needs actors anymore? Who knows what's real? Wow.

@arlogilbert Wow! Very cool! Also a bit scary, for the potential harm it could do. Something like this, used for nefarious purposes, could literally start wars. The artist in me loves the idea. And I'm sure lots of commercials will use this, now. But wow. That is scary.

@arlogilbert This is super scary, some nerd is going to start WW3 from his basement. This is the kind of tech the government will end up outlawing, and I would support that decision.

Will it replicate David Attenborough? Or Morgan Freeman?

@eonpilot Will it create a Morgan Attenborough hybrid and freaking make everyone go into a catatonic state of narrative mic drop?

How is this product different from adobe's project VoCo? Except for the delivery mechanism. I smell a patent war!

This is pretty cool! Lyrebird will offer an API to copy the voice of anyone. It will need as little as one minute of audio recording of a speaker to compute a unique key defining her/his voice. This key will then allow to generate anything from its corresponding voice. The API will be robust enough to learn from noisy recordings. The following sample illustrates this feature, the samples are not cherry-picked. Make sure to check out the demos

This is incredible, but I agree.. as the technology continues to improve, the potential impact of this on fake news is scary.

Wow... Just listened to the convo back and forth between Obama, Trump and Hillary. Is it just me or is the Trump voice pretty darn close? @(makers??) Would this get better with more sample audio and transcript data provided? In the case of Trump, how many minutes of audio+text would you need to get a 10X better voice?

@trentbigelow also interested to know the answer to this one :-) Hoping one of the makers jumps in here.

@trentbigelow I think definitely, more data - higher quality. But what doubts me is - the amount of computing power needed to make it a public API. WaveNet was a monster in this case.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. Cool tech but hard to imagine the benefits will outweigh the harm it will do.

This would be great for reputation management. A lot of artists I work with and that I know don't have the time to appear on video, let alone send a tweet...which can be an issue since their profession thrives on fan interaction. Having their voice replicated for a short voice message, which can make a difference in converting a casual fan into a superfan, would be huge. I'm watching this closely to see how the speech improves (and I hope I get into the beta!)

Wow, this is a very original use of artificial intelligence. The vioces do sound a little too synthetic for now - but I trust they will get much better with time.

A frightening glimpse into the potential of the future. Pretty soon we will very likely see false recordings of people's likeness, in both audio and video formats, and average people will soon have difficulty identifying what is real and what is manufactured. One can argue that people are already having a problem with reality without this, so you can certainly expect it to exacerbate it. On the positive side, this will make AI-based automatons and VR much more believable, more useful, and ultimately more pleasant. It's a brave new world folks.
