@katesegrin when I first read it, I was blown away by the careful consideration Tanizaki gives to objects (from the toilet to soy sauce to paper), and time's relationship with beauty (he loves the "smoky patina...so patiently waited for"). It feels like Barthes' semiotics, but delivered from a distinctly Eastern perspective. On second read, I'm now admiring the measured prose and the well-worn thoughts that persist to this day, and are even more relevant in a fast-paced, high-tech world--a meta-commentary on the book's focus itself.
