I wrote a blog post that talks about our approach to the sorting algorithm, and other fun bits about building the app!

Grocery started with a simple idea: I wanted to be able to go grocery shopping with my list on my Apple Watch. In theory it sounds like a good idea since you don't have to take it in and our of your pocket or manage pen and paper but in practice there are two problems. 1: Many list apps aren't great in the store: small text, small tap targets, etc. (easy to solve) And 2: the Watch screen is too small to scan through your entire list to find the next item. (harder to solve)
So we set out to solve the harder problem with automatic sorting. It tracks when you mark things off then auto-reorders next time. The sorting algorithm is pretty smart for combining items from different trips. Once the list is in order, shopping from Grocery on the watch is really great. Next 3 items at a glance, big text, big tap targets. Check it out!

@ryanconsidine The smart sorting is great – grocery IQ has it but doesn't seem to be actively developed anymore. One other key feature is the ability to scan barcodes have import products that way. On the development cycle?

This looks really promising. However, what if you frequent multiple stores (that each have distinct layouts)? Wouldn't shopping at more than one store screw up the algorithm?

@tim_vermeulen that's true for now. But we're looking into location tracking to solve this in a future update!

@ryanconsidine @tim_vermeulen That's cool because the reminders app has location geo-fencing triggers.

Nice app, working great. But it is a bit sad that we cannot use emojis in the item name

@david_senate Funny the emoji renders correctly on the Apple Watch, but not within the iPhone app..

I've been looking for something like this for over a year. Perfect execution!
I love the simple UI and the integration with iOS Reminders.
Thanks for all the work! (and the blog post also, I love reading about the behind-the-scene thinking)

This is exactly the grocery app I was waiting for. I love that it integrates with Reminders/Siri, since Siri is my primary method for adding items to my list. Thank you!

I would love if this had a URL-scheme for launching the app. Why? Because I have an app that will push a notification to me when I'm at any of the four or five places I buy groceries at. I mean, if the next version has a way to send you a push that will open the app when tapped at a list of specific locations that'd be great, but I think the URL-scheme to just open it would be simpler to code.
Also, I had a list in reminders called Groceries and it was smart enough to figure out it was my grocery list. Super cool.
Anyway, I'm in love with this app. I just want a way to remember to use it when I get to the store which is my biggest problem with shopping list apps.

@toffer_surovec I think we'll most likely build the notification ourselves, since we also want to keep unique sorting data for different store layouts, which would require location services
But doesn't mean we can't also do URL schemes / workflow / launchcenter etc

@ryanconsidine either way works for me.
Random idea: once you have the location and sorting out grey out and move things to the bottom of the list if the item isn't usually bought there.
Example: If I keep buying cat food at Costco, but I am at H-E-B and cat food is on the list move it to the bottom of the list and maybe even gray it out someway just to show that it's not usually bought there.
Disclaimer: This is the first app like this that works in a way that I actually love so I'm trying to request things that I have problems with like not remembering to open the list and buying the right thing at the wrong place.

Android version ? I have iOS but my wife uses Android, so I would love to have something that we could collaborate. No only to add items to list, but also tick them off while on the supermarket.

Hey guys, my wife and I have been using Capitan all these years and really like it. It also claims (and does a great job for us) of using AI to know your habits and simplify the shopping experience. What is different about Grocery?
