A few days ago I shared a survey on Twitter, asking folks which "story" app they default to when capturing a moment: Snapchat, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, or Instagram. Most chose Snapchat or Instagram, but many also replied with the answer: "the default camera app" The biggest missing piece with the default iOS camera is shareability, which Clips is clearly designed for. Apple historically hasn't had success creating social software (remember Ping?) but curious how this plays out.

@rrhoover Interesting. Apple is the last company I tend to look at for this kind of thing. Wonder what the motivation behind this is.

@rrhoover This is very interesting. I expect it'll do better than any iMessage app. Instagram will be the main benefactor in my opinion.

@rrhoover I'm trying to figure out why they went this route vs. building these features, or just the basic features of Clips, into the camera app. Maybe it's due to overcrowding the app with features, but now I'll need to use two Apple camera apps. I feel like this could have taken over the "Square" setting in the Camera app. One mans opinion...

@rrhoover I wonder if they care about fixing the iMessage Apps or they will continue to release half baked things.

@rrhoover I've been wondering if Apple would create a developer platform around the native iOS camera app as they've done with the iMessage App Store. If the "camera is the new keyboard" perhaps this is a half step towards that direction.

@bracco @rrhoover I think that the growing importance of "dark social" is coming into play here. If the camera is being used to share content, then that's worth looking at.

@andreasduess it's classic apple it's just that under Tim Cook classic apple is taking a while and classic apple today includes looking at what is happening let's say the Rio mp3 Player comes out in 2000 and it takes the Apple till 2003 till the iTunes Store comes out, the infrastructures finally there for the commercialization of social sharing, now that the advertising models in place Apple theoretically might try to look at Social the non-physical as it used to look at the physical with MP3's ala iPods, because as we all know the camera on the iPhone is the reason for the iPhone
Richard Altman
@mitzkahdrinnen · Idea Guy behind inviid
@adamdepasqua I'm sure this will be incorporated into the camera and if anybody is been paying attention apparently the next few versions the iPhone are going to become more clear to make room for augmented reality so on the dial next to slow motion and stop motion go the options from clip or Clips will be a camera onto itself with similarly arranged user interface from camera

@mitzkahdrinnen We'll see. To be honest, integrating it within the camera doesn't allow them to have a trendy marketable camera app. I can only imagine the ad that is going to go along with this. It'll be fun. I'm not hating, it was just a shocker. Now I'm over the shock and just want to try it.

@adamdepasqua @rrhoover The "Square" setting is my favourite. :-)

@adamdepasqua I think they want to make the phone itself sort of like the app if it's going to be a clear phone and they're going to use augmented reality then the phone becomes the non-physical app. I'm trying to express that I think the telephone that apple offers next is going to be clear, and that Clips will work with all social networks and it'll be something only Clips and iPhone8 can do, whatever shared, everyone will know the tool used to create it. I think it'll be content that can only be made by the combination, more than a photo and geotagging, better than Snap Glass, it'll be interesting to see Google try and imitate Apple again, hopefully and developers unable to imitate without jailbreaks
Adam D.
@adamdepasqua · Founder of To Eat List
@mitzkahdrinnen I don't think they'll go clear as clear processors, LTE chips, SSD's, etc don't really exist. Though maybe that's why it hasn't been leaked yet...because we can't see it. 🙃 Jokes aside, Clips should be fun app, and I'm looking forward to checking it out. Seriously though, if you are thinking a clear iPhone is coming, September is going to be a big bummer for you.

@frassmith @rrhoover Nice! Do you use it primarily for easy social posts? I've never heard someone sing the praises of the "Square" setting so I'm intrigued.

@adamdepasqua @rrhoover I'm guessing two separate teams that aren't allowed to talk to each other. Typical Apple – but would be cool if you could set this to be default from your lock screen.

Why everybody around is getting crazy about this social sharing stuff... Am I the only one who don't want to make & share videos from my personal life?

Depending on how well it's executed, this could be cool: "Clips recognizes who’s in your videos and makes smart suggestions for sharing. Just tap a name to send your video using Messages."

This isn't about Snapchat clone or Ping 2.0. It's about data. Enormous amounts of data are being collected that are orders of magnitude more important than simple data taken out of context. When video with time, audio, context, location, potentially interpreted feelings (emoji, stickers, filters, etc) are mined, mashed, filtered, interpreted, you have something orders of magnitudes more important than simple data. This IS about a good app being made, but that wasn't the full or only intention. It was secondary or tertiary.

Apple is following their saying perfectly again on this one—"never be first." After a bunch of people try, come out with something refind.

Smart actually. They aren't reinventing the wheel. Many people share to multiple places, so this will make it so you only have to shoot once.

It seems very low and desperate when big companies make wannabe snapchat apps. Or maybe it tells that snapchat is the leader in making playful youth targeted features.
Kevin Elliott
@kevinelliott · Founder at @WeLike, @Mused, @HomeTender
@fatikowais Yes, there's truth here -- Snapchat is in the lead for capturing the eyes of the youth. Facebook has been downtrending on people 25 and under for the last year or so. Apple is not differentiating itself in that market either. This is an opportunity to capture them.
