For those of you asking why we keep talking about pancakes on Twitter, now you know. 😄🥞 Today we're opening a beta for YourStack, a new place to share the products you use and love. We're building a home to answer those common questions: "What's on your homescreen?" I just added byte. "Which smart home security system do you have?" I use the camera-less Minut system. "What tools do you use to manage a distributed team?" Humble Dot has been a useful addition for us. "What's your favorite book on psychology?" I really enjoyed The Courage to be Disliked. In many ways, YourStack isn't a new idea. We've been thinking about this problem space for years. We tried once and failed. Ask Product Hunt was our first attempt and in hindsight it's clear why it didn't work (I'll write a postmortem about it sometime). With those learnings and the last 6 years building Product Hunt, we're creating an entirely new site and brand. It has the same kittenish feel as Product Hunt but much more people-centric. As with any social product, there's a lot of nuance and iterations required to get it right. But we'd love for your early feedback. Create a profile and feel free to send us your questions/ideas here, on Twitter, or email me directly at ryan@producthunt.com. 😄

@producthunt @rrhoover Congrats in the launch Ryan! 🎉🎉 Can't wait for my turn to try it out! :D

@producthunt @rrhoover Congggggraatttsss guys!!! Well done! 👍

@producthunt Congrats on the launch @rrhoover 🎉 I can already see some good makers sharing their stacks and even their usage stories. Nice place, waiting to get in! 😄
Justin Mares
@producthunt @rrhoover I love the use of the word "kittenish". Going to figure out how to work this into my daily vocabulary.
Ryan Hoover
@jwmares it's a good word :)
Chuck Grimmett
The waitlist is completely overplayed. It was cool with Mailbox, now it isn't. I went on the site to try to use it *right now* - don't make me wait with a tired growth tactic.
Ryan Hoover
@chuck_grimmett sorry for the wait, Chuck. For YourStack, the waitlist is critically important to ensure we can create a good experience. For example, within the first few hours of launch, 700 new products were added to the database but we currently lack scaleable manual and automated moderation tooling to fix duplicates, update imagery, ensure each product is properly categorized, etc. If we opened YourStack to everyone on day 1, it would be a disaster. We're working really hard to catch up and onboard more people. If I was confident we could handle the traffic today, I'd remove the waitlist.
Michael Bracklo
@chuck_grimmett @rrhoover that's understandable, but then then why 'launch' now at all? I signed up months ago to see hundreds of people on the list before me. Now you're announcing the beta launch to great fanfare on the PH newsletter, and I login only to see there is still the same amount of people before me on the waitlist? 😄
James JOHNSON
@chuck_grimmett @rrhoover Makes complete sense!
Ryan Hoover
@96kbit unlike a utility or SaaS business, social products need a critical mass of users before they can be useful for anyone. In our case, it's also important that we build a product database informed by the early community. We chose to launch the beta publicly so we can quickly start learning + iterating with some level of scale. We wouldn't be able to do so nearly as effectively (or as quickly) with just a few hundred people.

Wasn’t this the point of Product Hunt in the first place? This seems like Product Hunt within Product Hunt 🤔
Primer
Twitter only signup?? Am I going to have to wait years to be able to login with something other than Twitter or Facebook the way I did with Product Hunt? it REALLY doesn't take long to implement a comprehensive registration solution but let's see what happens. However the fact that you still can't even signup for Product Hunt natively doesn't bode well.
Ryan Hoover
@mickc79 thanks for the feedback, Mick. It's important for us to ensure everyone logs in with the same social graph so that we can help people find their friends. The biggest challenge with multiple social logins is that your friends may use a different login than you. Yes, we ask users to do multiple oauth logins (Facebook + Twitter + PH + etc...) but most won't do it and I don't think that's the best onboarding flow when first signing up.
Primer
@rrhoover No worries Ryan, your product your rules. I'd only question that the problem you seem to have doesn't seem to be a problem for any other site / platform / app out there?
John Alexander
went through onboarding now it says i'm on the waitlist 😩
Ryan Hoover
@johnalxndr welcome, John! We're holding off opening the floodgates today to ensure the product can scale and that it's useful to everyone as it grows. The hardest part about building social products is the unknown unknowns – you never know how people might use something in unexpected ways. We'll be onboarding new people every day so thanks for your patience. 🙏🏼
John Alexander
@rrhoover totally get it. congrats on the launch! I just got excited because it let me pick topics and products so I thought I got in early enough. Excited to try it out soon!
Sharath Kuruganty
Love the idea from the beginning and YourStack helps discover new products people who I know use frequently. But what I specifically love about YourStack is: 1. The comments section where I can see why people use their stack. This brings a sense of why I need to use. 2. The discoverability factor of new products people I love use. For example, now I know why and what Naval, Ryan and some awesome people uses in their daily life. Great design and overall I love Ryan and the whole PH team's ship first mentality and attack on the features post launch. Congratulations to everyone who put so much effort on YourStack 🎊 🎉 🙏
Ryan Hoover
@5harath appreciate your continued support, Sharath! 🙏🏼

Please allow alterations of username after import from Twitter. Perhaps you do, I can't tell I am wait-listed, but I would like the option to not be forced to follow my outdated Twitter handle for username/path.
Ryan Hoover
@kmullett thanks for the feedback, Kevin. We'll look into this with the team. :)
Joseph Nelson
Excited this is live! Congrats on the beta launch. Inviting to get in. The only bad news is announcing our launch on the same day 😆
Suraj Keshri
Is there a way to sign up without giving permission to read my twitter profile? It's asking for too many permissions
David Smooke
Hey cool trying out now! What is the API and database setup for organization of the products?
Ryan Hoover
@davidsmooke do you mean for brands/companies that have multiple products (e.g. Tesla --> Model 3, Model S, etc.)? We're currently keeping it simple. There's no concept of a company or organization yet, but we'll be introducing a one-to-many model to account for this in the future.
David Smooke
@rrhoover Yea brands with multiple products does present a grouping challenge. With the API was thinking more about business model and populating the database with all products, like maybe using the amazon product referral api could do both, but probably doesnt make the most sense for this thing to be dependent upon amazon. With the database question was more just curious, what is the tech stack of YourStack.com?
Ludwig
Cool! Although I fear that this will be abused by companies writing fake posts :/
Ryan Hoover
@ludwig_stumpp valid concern, something we think about a lot. It's hard to combat spam/abuse at scale, but very doable with the right strategy and foundation. I won't share our entire roadmap for this but I'll mention: This is one of the reasons why we're limiting to Twitter oauth to start with.
Sergio
I like it :) Cool implementation, well made design. Hope in the future we would see the products from the same brand (then brands grouped by parent company) and also by category (robotics, auto, smartphones, phones, etc)! Idea: user cover images generated by using a mix of colors (gradient or so) from all products & brands used :P
Aj D
Only works if you have a Twitter account?
Joel Runyon
I've been using Your Stack for a minute. It was fun to put together, but I'm curious on how it scales out now that it's open for beta. Great job @rrhoover and YourStack team.
Louis-Victor Jadavji
Great way to bring attention back to products that steadily iterated to a much improved state.
Al
Really easy to add products of all shapes and sizes. I like how the most rare products I used 10+ years ago can be added to my stack. Did a quick review here: https://coda.io/@atc/product-hun...
Chris Dancy
Sure, but it needs to come out of beta! Until then here's my stack http://www.chrisdancy.com/howto
JP1016
I was about to build a similar product, but dropped it when i saw yourstack on twitter 😜 Congratulations on making this 🔥
Rick Rey
On the waitlist. Look forward to trying it out. Congrats on the launch!
Armand
One of the best executed viral waitlists I've seen in years. Really.
