Hi PH community 👋
Around a year ago I was working for a startup that was using Google Docs/Drive for their internal documentation.
I found that it wasn't really ideal for content sharing and finding information, and no one was really using it because of this!
You need a wiki is here to solve that...
It takes all the best parts of Google Docs (Editing, formatting, versioning), sprinkles some wiki functionality on top, and creates something that you and your team will hopefully want to use and be compelled to contribute to.
Some of the key features:
✅ View all your pages at once with the tree menu
✅ Navigate between pages quickly
✅ See who edited the page last
✅ Create links to other pages with a select and click
✅ Read only mode, no more accidental updates
✅ Leverages the power of Google docs
Create a wiki for free now and start sharing knowledge with your team!
@grantkiely Great work! At my first internship last summer our wiki/documentation was with confluence and it was downright awful. It neither succeeded at including all the work within it, nor at least organizing links to external content.
A poor wiki system really is just about the worst thing possible for a company. Communication is vital.
Hey @grantkiely, congratulations to the launch! It looks great. Is there an option to invite people just in the view mode? I think it could also be used as a lead magnet for a free ebook/online course...
@paulpreisler Thanks Paul and great suggestion. I am currently working on a way to do this and I should have it in place within a week's time. If you like I can send you a pm with the timeline and then an update when it's ready.
@paulpreisler@grantkiely Congratulation, Grant!!
I also wait for the update that @paulpreisler requested. I am a teacher and it is very useful to publicly see my student´s work, but only to see. Only my students can edit.
Thank you and congratulations from Spain.
Just wanted to pop in here and say congratulations on the launch, @grantkiely 🎉 Love seeing new approaches to wikis and agree with you that most teams need a wiki. Love the idea of building on top of Google Docs and think that's really smart. Good luck!
hi @grantkiely, I've just signed up but I'm now stuck on a loading page at https://youneedawiki.com/app, is there any way to fix this? :o the product looks great and I can't wait to use it!
@alex_dobrenko@grantkiely thank you so much! I've just taken this for a whirl and I absolutely love it. there are plenty of other applications for it besides a wiki, and that makes it super fun. great job on this grant :D
@theodorasarahabigail
Thank you so much Theodora! I appreciate your patience with the log in.
You are right, there are some applications outside of a wiki that I had not even considered!
I’m also looking to add more features! You can see them here: https://ynaw.nolt.io
@estebanrules Great point Damian! I also ❤️wiki's and there are a lot of good options out there.
What I think distinguishes You Need A Wiki from others is it's primary focus on Drive/Docs integration first. Docs is a powerful editor so I wanted to keep that and extend it for team wiki's.
Because of this integration you can do things like:
- Set up a wiki quickly with your existing Docs (no copy, pasting and reformatting)
- If your team already knows how to use Docs, they can start adding to the wiki straight away. Your team members don't have to learn how to edit a wiki in a new interface.
- All your changes are saved to Drive so if you change your mind down the track everything is stored there.
There are probably others but I think these are the biggest pros/distinguishers from other wiki's.
@grantkiely Cool. The low barrier to entry could actually be huge for us - for example we have used Gollum in the past but Sales and Marketing are not able to use it (understandably). We will demo the product next week.
Very, very nice idea and implementation. If I wasn't using Notion, which has other things that I need, then this definitely would be the solution that I would choose.
@jwelch Thanks James! What are those other things if you don't mind me asking.
I've been considering a way to add todo lists, as well as a way to do /heading or /subheading in Google Docs.
This is awesome - why I didn't come with this ideas :)
Here are few things that can me be your customer:
1. Create your own domain (or at least subdomain with project or business name for ex. upqode.youneedawiki.com)
2. Have public viewing Documentation (we create documentation and tutorials for our products) - will be nice to share that doc / wiki.
3. Have a landing page where you can add different projects (https://foxthemes.helpscoutdocs....)
4. Drag and Drop for Articles - otherwise is really hard to adjust the order.
@nicolaepase Thanks for sharing this feedback Nicolae, I am looking forward to implementing all of those features!
1 & 2 are scheduled for this week.
3. Is a great idea, I've added it here: https://ynaw.nolt.io/25, feel free to comment if it's missing anything or I've written it incorrectly.
4. https://ynaw.nolt.io/13, I do want to build this, it is probably a couple weeks away. In the mean time I would suggest using a number to order your files, e.g. 1. This document is first, 2. Read this second. But I understand this is not ideal long term.
Thanks again for the awesome feedback!
Awesome job @grantkiely! I love the idea of using the tools we already have to accomplish what we need instead of using yet another tool.
Quick question - in playing around I noticed a lack of a search function. Is this something you intend to add at some stage?
@david_gentile Hi David!
Yes I do, I've got a ticket for it here: https://ynaw.nolt.io/10
It should be available within a month, and you can sign up to be updated when it's completed on that ticket.
I'll also make a note to send you a message when it's done if you like!
Hi Grant - I've been looking for a solution to "crowd edit" my next book, Indistractable. What's the limit on users per wiki? Last time I tried to use gDocs and it crashed after about 50 people in the doc at a time. Thanks!
@nireyal Hi Nir! I've followed up with you via email about both this and batch adding users. This sounds really cool, would love to be able to do it in YNAW!
