Walking Games: Explora - Gamified step tracker app, get motivated to walk every day

Walking is good for you. As a tech person, you are probably like me: not doing enough of it. This gamified app (using a light "Duolingo" approach") is designed to remind you to walk more every day, and help you protect you health while having fun.

After a successful soft launch in France with 1,000 users, the app has just been released to all countries. To celebrate and help it gain some attention, the lifetime VIP offer has been made free for some time. This way, you can test all features and start walking more today! 😎

Congratulations on the launch. This reminds me of a product called Stepn. However, that product was a complete scam, while you have created an interesting gamified experience! I am really looking forward to your success!

@brandon_cccc Thanks Brandon for your message! You are right, seeing the success of Stepn made me realize that something could be done with tracking people's steps and adding some fun layers around it. But Web3 economies have been challenging to sustain in this field, which is why I didn't go there! I hope you try the app and have fun ;)

This seems super fun! What if you can make it almost like peloton but for iPhone?
Luc Bruyant
@benjamin_sloutsky Now THAT would be a great goal for us!

💡 Bright idea
Really like the gamification and personas of the app which is quite interesting and could help build long-term habits. Curious about how you plan to strengthen the differentiation against apps like Strava/Stepbet. Also, check out https://stepsetgo.com/ - it's a walking app that got really popular in India around Covid time. There are some fun ideas around how they use in-app currency for redeeming rewards, active time during specific parts of the day to earn more rewards for steps taken during that time. There's community games like monthly challenges but also custom challenges, then they have auctions/trading and other stuff - which adds to the gamification part of the app. The mechanism around tiers/upgrading to different levels is fun too. Great job and congrats on the launch :)

@kshitij1108 Hi, first of all thanks for your detailed message! Also, I didn't know about stepsetgo, it seems very interesting with some cool ideas, I am definitely checking it out to look for inspiration. Regarding active time during the day, this is something I have in the pipe 😄 I found this feature as well as other things you just mentioned in https://sweatco.in/, which has been a big inspiration too. Regarding the differentiation, I am mostly focused on: - Maximum gamification, it's not just about tracking and numbers, but also about more advanced psychological things (streaks, leagues with other players...) - Avoid to have "real money" involved like a lot of walking apps that pay you to walk. It's great on paper, but these models usually have very very high inflation as soon as the users flow in, which makes the rewards worthless very fast (and the users dissatisfied) - In the future, if the project goes well and is financially sustainable, I would like to develop the social aspect much more with friends challenges, guilds... Thanks again for your thoughts, very appreciated!

Hi Luc, congrats on the launch on PH. I haven't downloaded the app yet but from what I see it looks awesome. Duolingo is one of the apps I have used daily for over 2 years and I love the gamification part of it. It is good to see this approached being applied to other things, especially anything related to health. By the way, it does not seem like a simple app. How long did it take to build it?
Luc Bruyant
@theanamoura Hi Ana, thanks a lot for your comment! Good question, basically it lasted around 6 months. The timeline is a bit like this: - 1 month - make an MVP - 1 month - collect feedback - 1 month - make an alpha - 1 month - collect feedback - 1 month - make a beta - 1 month - make some business KPIs & UA tests And here we are :)
Ana Mouratidou
@hello_explora wow that is very impressive! Good job you guys. 👏👏

The idea of gamifying walking with Explora is innovative. It raises questions about data security, though. What measures are in place to protect user information, especially given the health data involved?
Luc Bruyant
@su_kumar Hi Sukumar, thanks for your message! Regarding data you have a good point, let me give you a bit more information: - Actually, the only health data we are collecting is the number of steps done for the last few days, so nothing too sensitive. - Anyway, as we are using the Google Fit API, we had to undergo deep security assessments from an independent consulting firm, which found that the app respects all professional standards to protect user data. So, your data is safe with us :)
Sukumar
@hello_explora Thanks for the clarification

Congratulations on your launch I think it could potentially enhance its appeal by providing deeper insights into health metrics. More detailed analytics might help users understand the impact of their activities better.
Luc Bruyant
@jessica_herman2 Hi Jessica, thanks a lot for taking the time to check the app. This is actually something many users already asked, you're in the right. It's definitely in the top part of my backlog. :)

William Jin
Love the concept behind Walking Games: Explora! Gamifying step tracking is a fun way to stay motivated. Are there different levels or challenges to keep users engaged over time?
Luc Bruyant
@william_jin Hi William, good question! Indeed this is one of the main focuses. Every month there is a new seasonal challenge in which players can try to unlock a unique character that will only be available during this event. Players really love it and it keeps them coming back. But there are many aspects we are trying to build there, the social aspect in particular (clans, friends challenges...) Do you have some ideas that we could try?
