Hello friends! Today I'm sharing with you what I called a "prayer engine." I built it over a weekend, mostly to learn some SSE within HTMX. I shared it with a couple of friends and people started using it! Now, I have grouped the three prayers under a single brand: The Prayer Page. Super easy to remember and to use. I might add more prayers if some get enough requests! Prayer.page is a PWA (Progressive Web App) so you can easily install it on your phone by bookmarking the page to the home. Ask Me Anything about building (and shipping) products!

@gregoiregilbert Congratulations on the launch! 🚀🙏
Greg Gilbert
@meryem_ghazi thank you! Did you give it a try already? :)
Greg Gilbert
@louisa_gendelle thank you. Did you try it yet?

I do love me some HTMX! I think this is so fascinating and powerful. I love calm tech that is a tool that truly helps the person using it
Greg Gilbert
@campak thanks, Cam! Have you tried to play with SSE + htmx?
Greg Gilbert
@campak ah! sorry. Server Sent Event. A way to push information (one way) from the server to the browser. That's what I use to display the lines of prayer. Do you use websockets? or just hx-get?
Cam Pak
@gregoiregilbert Nice. I just use hx-get :)
Greg Gilbert
@campak cool :) I built the first prototype with it. And of course I often use hx-get for other things!

Amazing to see this! Coincidentally, I also just launched a faith-based app called Aalim.chat today. I love seeing folks creating useful tools for their communities.
Greg Gilbert
@dudeincode hey Farid! Thanks for the kind words. Wanted to check your app but it's 500 at the moment? Will check again later :)
Greg Gilbert
@dudeincode ah! I think it's because I visited the root (no www). The redirect didn't work if you don't go to the www first
Farid Sultani
@gregoiregilbert Brother, I'm not going to lie: you gave me a heart attack for about 5 seconds. :) Glad to know the server isn't down! I tried root and www just now, and it was working fine for me. If it happens again for you, please let me know (if you don't mind).
Greg Gilbert
@dudeincode haha, so sorry. Not exactly sure what happened. Since it was 500, it was probably not a redirect issue. It's working fine now! Congrats on the launch :)
Farid Sultani
@gregoiregilbert I just saw it now. You were right: 500, and it was loading with www. It worked fine after a reload, but definitely something I need to look into. I appreciate you letting me know about this! Lord knows how many others might have experienced it.
Sarah Cassady
Congrats on a very pretty app! 🎉
Greg Gilbert
@sarahcassady thank you, Sarah! Looking forward to seeing your app go live on PH! Have you tried htmx before?
Sarah Cassady
@gregoiregilbert I haven’t explored htmx, no. I’m pretty stuck in the Rails/Hotwire world right now!
Greg Gilbert
@sarahcassady ah! I've used Turbo quite a lot before finding out about htmx. Unfortunately it's extra work to use Hotwire with Flask. It got me consider trying Rails again though.. but I don't have the time yet :D

Congratulations on the launch! I think this is such a cool product. I love how it puts your individual, personal prayer time into into a global context, being able to see how many people are praying with you. Those prayers are profound and timeless and it's exciting to see them thoughtfully integrated with technology. Inspiring work, Greg!
Greg Gilbert
@joschua thank you, my friend! Your kind words mean a lot to me. I remember, when I showed you, you were a bit confused by the "beads" Do you find them useful now that you know the reason they're here?
Dan Mindru
This is so beautiful! The people counter is such a lovely touch — gives you a sense of belonging. Well done Greg!
Greg Gilbert
@dan_mindru thank you very much, Dan! It was a fun weekend project to work on :)

The potential for this is huge! Even though it’s created for christians, I see no reason why it can’t evolve into a collective affirmation hub.
Greg Gilbert
@perfexcellent absolutely! I've been thinking about it since you mentioned it. I just have to add the affirmations to the engine (in a flat file) and it would work :)
Garen D Orchyan
Good job! Big congratulations and best of luck today. ❤️🦄🚀

@dima_rubanov thanks a lot Dima! 🫡 You've done this rodeo multiple times. Any tips on keeping calm while refreshing the page? :p
As a christian I like this a lot. I gave the Jesus Prayer a try. It was a good 2-3 minute escape from crazy reality. Seeing that there are other people praying at the same time gives a sense of community. I like it a lot, Greg! Only problem I still have that it doesn't work on my iPhone SE for some reason. Have you considered linking on reddit christianity subreddit?
Greg Gilbert
@philkellr I haven't but that's a good idea! Any subreddit that comes to mind? Most of them are quite drastic when it comes to promoting..
@gregoiregilbert I've spent time in /r/Christianity/ a few years back and it was a pleasant subreddit. You have a free product so it would do very well on there - I think.
Max Nachamkin
Very cool. I like the real-time nature of it, and a cool way to practice HTMX here (on my todo list). Congrats on the launch.
Greg Gilbert
@maxnachamkin thank you, Max! HTMX is quite cool. I think you'll enjoy it :)
