Hi, I'm David 👋 I'm a freelancer and startup founder. I want to support other freelance founders on their road to financial independence. 2 years ago I hired a freelancer. Instead of telling them exactly what to work on, I asked what intrigued them — what would be a useful tool for them? Much to my surprise, they came up with the most beautiful 😻 and useful spreadsheet I've ever seen. 🔮 The Freelance Rate Calculator 🔮 Not only does it help you calculate — based on expenses — the exact amount you need to charge per hour, per day, and per week. It also helps you calculate how much you can save and many days off you can take. ⚡️ It's "how to start an independent business" in one simple spreadsheet. ⚡️ If you've ever wondered about the minimum you need to do in your freelance work (or self-owned business) in order to make rent, afford a car, internet, utilities, and a computer, this spreadsheet gives that to you. 🤑 Get an idea of how much you're worth and how much you need to charge to make things work. If you're running a solo SaaS business, trying to make it as a freelancer, or thinking about starting a startup — this simple spreadsheet will save you so much time and heartache. Figure out how much you really need to be making every week/day/hour in order to set off on your own. 🚀 It can help you figure out how much to save in advance or help give you the confidence to ask your clients for more money. Because, if you're working your hardest and still not making enough money to pay rent, you're probably not charging enough. Does the idea of calculating how much money you need to make in order to survive give you anxiety? 😳 Welcome to The Freelance Rate Calculator! Thank you @chrismessina for all your help launching this project! 🙏 You are an amazing asset to the indie maker community! 😻

Gabe Perez
Checked it out and super simple & clear. Way to take one of the most difficult things to decide, your rate, and put it in context. Well done! One thing that's not in the formula is maybe to add your "worth" (so years of experience?) to help calculate if your target is attainable or you should shoot above it.
David Miranda
@gabe__perez Hi Gabe, that's a really good point — one thing missing from this is any idea of skillset/quality of work/value provided. Will need to think about how to represent this in numbers. 🤔
Jack Davis
I like the drawing of the purple guy on the logo lol!
David Miranda
@jack_davis7 Haha, thank you Jack! It was a lot of fun to draw!
Carlos Costi

Maciej Radzikowski
Wow. Instead of making a custom form on your page, you just used Google Sheets, but made it beautiful at the same time. I'm really impressed.
David Miranda
@mradzikowski The hard work of making a spreadsheet that's so beautiful was done by @z_coady. I love it as a way to test MVPs because spreadsheets are super flexible and very familiar to most people.
Nicolas Galera-Giron
Nicely done.

Love this David. As someone who's had freelancing gigs and is looking to double down on this, I'll definitely be using this. Love the methodology and already shared with a few friends
David Miranda
@jayyoms James, this means a lot to me! I hope it helps your business grow!
Ken Moo
Very nice! Works not just for freelancers but can be used for business planning and project planning too. Great job :)
David Miranda
@kenmoo That's true. Maybe V2 will be more about this direction 😏 you never know!
Jonas Kamber
This is awesome! Love the simplicity. The Working Hours part is something beginners usually overestimate. Even as an established freelancer, it's still hard to get to 4 working hours per day (on average). Depending on the field, though. There might be a way to break that down into smaller steps. For example: # of hours to acquire a project, project size, # of hours for accounting, general marketing (website etc)… Great work!
David Miranda
@jonas_kamber This is a *very* good point. I feel like early freelancers usually underestimate a lot of steps and need better step-by-step guides in general!
Vivi Serrano
Loving you logo!
David Miranda
@vivi_serrano Haha, thanks Vivi! I designed it myself :D can you believe it?
