Sidekick Browser - The fastest browser built for work.

by
Top Hunter

Sidekick is a new browser based on Chromium.
Designed to be the fastest online work experience, its UX is built around the most popular web apps, supports multiple logins, and uses workspaces to keep tab clutter under control.
And did we mention search?

Hi Hunters, I’m Dmitry, founder and CEO of Sidekick. And I’m so excited to share with you the browser for work we’ve been building for the past year and a half.🙏 Just like most of you, I work in a browser all the time. So when I was doing an EIR at Kleiner Perkins, we thought a lot about the future of online work, and one thing always seemed strange to me - why are we working in a tool designed for browsing? And why aren’t companies who make browsers fix obvious problems that prevent us from being more productive and enjoying our work more? The answer is surprisingly simple - knowledge workers make up just 1-2% of their user base, and developing features for us is not economical and will complicate UX for the rest 99% of users. But what about the hundreds of millions of people who work online and struggle because of it 🤷‍♀️? Shouldn’t there be a better way? We decided that there should be, and started building Sidekick. There a quite a few improvements that we've made on top of Chromium, but here are some of the highlights: 📱UX built around working with applications - where we spend most of our time. With badges, in-app search, and shortcuts. As a long time user of Franz, I love having all messengers and work-related tools in one place. 🚄 A browser optimized for speed. The average Chrome user has 6 tabs open all the time. I bet that you have more. We built an AI-based tab suspender so that Sidekick uses the same amount of memory whether you have 10 tabs open or 100. As one of our early users said "My old MacBook Air now feels like a $4k machine." 🔎A built-in powerful search. Collecting all of your web apps in one place enables something really important: being able to instantly find any documents, apps or contacts, no matter if they’re in Notion, your email, Slack, or anywhere else. All with a single shortcut. 🦁Built-in support for multiple accounts simultaneously for any app, whether they support it or not. 🕵️ browser that actively fights for your privacy and online anonymity with a built-in ad-blocker, and fingerprinting protection to confuse ad networks and trackers, which further improves page loading time. And there's more to come. 📊Tools to organize your work into labeled sessions and stop tab clutter once and for all. And all of this while being compatible with most Chrome features and extensions. Building Sidekick has been a fun challenge, and I want to thank the thousands of early adopters who helped us in our early days and patiently reported bugs and suggested features. And we're very excited to finally share it with the broader community. Join us, share your ideas for improvement and let's build a better work environment together 🙏, it truly is day 1 for all of us! And if you're maker, designer, engineer, product visionary or are just curious about working with us - send me a note. There's so much to be built here. And thanks for hunting @chrismessina !

@dmitry_pushkarev so excited for your launch! I love see more competition in the browser space, and you've combined so many components that are essential to finding productivity as a modern knowledge worker!
Dmitry Pushkarev
@dmitry_pushkarev @chrismessina Thanks again for hunting us. Truth be told - we do not intend to compete with browsers, they are a great choice for browsing :) Our goal is improve the browsing experience for work and productivity - something that, regretfully, browsers cannot do.
lior redlus
@dmitry_pushkarev looks great! How do you guys compare with Shift?
TheChibi WhoFangirls
@chrismessina @dmitry_pushkarev I am having MASSIVE issues all of a sudden today. New tabs do not load on the first try, I refresh and it would work [annoying tho], this happened on every site. I cleared Cache [no help] idk what is going on but its very out of the blue causing me to uninstall at this point, & I HONESTLLY do not want to.. :(
Aryan MK
Sounds cool! Do chrome extensions work? I don't want to leave them behind
Steven Tey
@aryan_m_kumar they do but don't think your bookmarks will be in sync if you're planning to use both Chrome and Sidekick side by side, unfortunately :(
Dmitry Pushkarev
@aryan_m_kumar They do, most Chrome extensions are fully compatible with Sidekick.
Aryan MK
@dmitry_pushkarev I'm definitely switching then!! Congrats on the launch :D
Pedro Pablo Fuentes Schuster
@aryan_m_kumar @steventey you could use https://www.xbrowsersync.org/ it allows to sync bookmarks across chromium based browsers
Neo
@aryan_m_kumar they work but I have been having problems with Vue
Olivier Coolen
Downloaded it and am lovin' it, however I was wondering, is there ever going to be a shortcut to open/close the sidebar? I know you can toggle it off, but having a shortcut to open/close it would make me much more productive! Anyways, AWESOME BROWSER! :)
Dmitry Pushkarev
@oliviercoolen We've never thought about it, but now that you mention it - it makes sense. We'll add it to our product backlog.
Vitaly Matveev
@oliviercoolen @dmitry_pushkarev I'd nod on that - the cost of switching from Opera at least for me would be having an equally easy UX for managing a sidebar and, perhaps, a more curated data transition process. I've spent >5 min looking for a shortcut to a sidebar then only to find out there's a toggle switch for that. Also, I've been much puzzled with Opera removing the sharing feature that would enable you to send links via Apps installed on your Mac like AirDrop or Things. It'd be amazing if you'd pull this off!
Alisa Korneeva
Great job @dmitry_pushkarev ! I've been using Sidekick for about a year and it helped me to get rid of the tab clutter - this is a BIG one as I used to have 100-200 tabs open at the same time. Also I LOVE the global search feature - really makes all your docs and tabs easy accessible and saves a lot of time while working online!
Dmitry Pushkarev
@dmitry_pushkarev @alisa_korneeva Thank you for the feedback! In a few weeks we will release an update to Sessions so hopefully we will reduce your 200 tabs to just a few that you need at the moment.
Lydia Sugarman
@dmitry_pushkarev @alisa_korneeva And, I thought I had a lot of open tabs!
Ugur KILCI 😈
The left bar caught my attention.
Moritz Wallawitsch
@ugur2nd I hope one can disable those massive notification badges, though.
Nathan Ganser
@ugur2nd @moritzwallawitsch Yep you can, just click on the clock below
Igor Marchuk
awesome! the only drawback - 1password extension (regular version) - wont work
Dmitry Pushkarev
@igor_march For now, they are checking browser version and they need to whitelist us first. You can use 1Password X as extension in the meantime.
Igor Marchuk
@igor_march @dmitry_pushkarev yeah that's exactly what i do, not optimal though. hopefully they'll whitelist you guys. otherwise, again - amazing app so far 👍
Adrian Cares
@igor_march @dmitry_pushkarev waiting for the whitelisting, too. Running 1Password 7 Desktop license, so using 1Password X (subscription version) is not an option. Incredible good browser otherwise. :) Replaced Station App and Chrome. Only have a 1Password 7 Desktop license, so using 1Password X is not an option.
Noorvir Aulakh
@igor_march LastPass is also not working yet. That is pretty crucial for me - looking forward to the whitelisting. Great product apart from that!
Adrian Cares
@igor_march @dmitry_pushkarev Might be worth mentioning that 1Password doesn't plan on whitelisting Sidekick for now. I've reached out to their support here: https://1password.community/disc... "At this time we are not planning on whitelisting additional browsers beyond the ones currently supported in the 1Password 7 app." That's a bummer. :(
Gabin Desserprit
Kaspersky fires a warning on your .exe for Windows. (Trojan-PSW.Win64.Agent.hj). You can check it there: https://www.virustotal.com/gui/u.... Do you know why?
Yury
@mnmlstentreprnr That's super strange and it seems that warning is triggered by some heuristic analysis. Our engineers already investigate it and we'll also contact Kaspersky and all other products reporting issues to fix it on their side. P.S. I checked your link and Kaspersky now shows that Sidekick is clean, however, Sophos still shows a warning there.
Gabin Desserprit
@mnmlstentreprnr @yury_a Sounds good. Just wanted to let you guys know as I got stuck at the installation stage. Might happen to others too. Anyway, testing it now and getting good vibes about it ;)
Dmitry Pushkarev
@mnmlstentreprnr Thank you reporting, we're looking into it. Likely the issue is that newest build doesn't have many installs just yet and Kaspersky is suspicious of that. We are reaching out to them.
Dmitry Pushkarev
@mnmlstentreprnr We got a reply back from Sophos, they said it's a false positive and updated their database. Kaspersky is still in the works, thank you for reporting.
Konstantin Seluminov
?makers thanks for the product, it looks very interesting. Have a question, though, is there a cloud synchronization of browsing history and bookmarks?
Yury
@konstantin_seluminov Since we're based on Chromium you can enable the default Google synchronization mechanism in browser settings (let me know if you need help with it).
David Trapp
@konstantin_seluminov @yury_a Hi I would need help - I went to chrome://settings/syncSetup but there are no sync options, only "more google services" with options "Allow SideKick sign-in" and two options about auto-completing searches and URLs... How do I enable synchronisation?
Yury
@davidtrapp 1) go to chrome://settings/syncSetup 2) enable "SideKick sign-in" 3) Relaunch Sidekick 4) After relaunch you'll see the "Turn on sync..." button on that page -- Since we use standard built-in Google account synchronization you need to sign in to a google account to sync data.
David Trapp
@davidtrapp @yury_a Ah I see, I'll try that - I have to say I find the description of the "Allow SideKick sign-in" option a bit confusing, it sounded as if it would *prevent* Google logins somehow (at least that would have explained why it's off by default)
David Trapp
@davidtrapp @yury_a Just to be sure, before I do this: If it already imported bookmarks, extensions and history locally before, is it going to work smoothly when I enable sync or will it create a mess because maybe it tries to sync the local settings upstream as well, creating duplicates in my account (which then also propagate to my other devices)? (That would be a nightmare to fix, as I have thousands of bookmarks.)
Evan Frawley
Really enjoying it so far, but why can't I use a New Tab override extension? :(
Dmitry Pushkarev
@evan_frawley We have a few important elements on New Tab Page that arent replicated elsewhere. As soon as we figure out where to put them - we can enable NTP extension. I have nothing against them personally :)
Barthélemy Godin
Looks like a Station and Chrome crossover. I have used Station for the past year and a half until they decided to pivot. Will probably give Stidekick a shot :)
Dmitry Pushkarev
@godinbar Please do! Unlike Station/Shift and similar products Sidekick is built on top of Chrome instead of Electron. This not only provides support for more apps / sites, but also give quite a bit more tools to optimize performance.
Phillippe
@godinbar @dmitry_pushkarev I'm really curious on how difficult the development experience was with chromium compared to electron? Surely chromium must have been a huge pain and time-drain to work with? How big is the team if I can ask? Amazing that you guys pulled it off!
Dmitry Pushkarev
@godinbar @dmitry_pushkarev @filipot It's pretty difficult and requires another level of expertise. It's 20+GB of C++ source code, but we were lucky enough to attract a stellar team with deep knowledge of Chromium codebase.
Sergei Burkov
To me, as an ex-Googler, the most intriguing feature is, of course, built-in search: instantly find any documents, apps or contacts, no matter if they’re in Notion, your email, Slack, or anywhere else. BTW, is it federated search? or do you index all those apps yourselves? do you keep the index only, or copies of all docs? what is the search engine? Elastic? ranking? tf-idf? :-)
Dmitry Pushkarev
@burkov We index history and documents locally so that browsing history never leaves your device. Search is fairly basic at the moment - it's a regression with manually adjusted coefficients, but it works a gazillion times better than in other browsers. The reason is very simple - browsers are not interested to help you find anything, they are only interested to send you to the Search engine and get paid for it. You can do a quick exercise (assuming you imported history into Sidekick) - search for something in Chrome and Sidekick, and compare.
Sergei Burkov
@dmitry_pushkarev Cool! does it mean your search engine runs locally? on my computer, not your server? did you write your search engine in JS? how do you handle sync between multiple devices?
Florian Bersier
Brillant! Sounds a bit like if Shift and eesel had a baby... Will give a try.
Dmitry Pushkarev
@florianbersier Or more like Franz, Workona, Command-E, Station, Superhuman and a few dozen others :) There's been a wonderful amount of work done on future of productivity, and while the jury is still out on what would work best - all we know for now is that it won't be general purpose browsers.
Moritz Wallawitsch
Interesting. Can you talk more about the AI algorithm that suspends the unused tabs memory? Have you measured some average browser used memory allocation improvement? Thanks!
Dmitry Pushkarev
@moritzwallawitsch Basically it learns (locally, no data is sent to the cloud) how you use tabs, and tries to predict whether you will need a given tab in the nearest future. If you don't - it would unload this tab (with a few exceptions) from memory so that it won't be lost from your tabstrip, but won't consume memory and CPU resources. Think of the Great Suspender on steroids that constantly gets better over time.
Nate Osterfeld
@moritzwallawitsch @dmitry_pushkarev This was my exact concern. The Great Suspender makes Chrome (or whatever browser) amazing. Interested in seeing the "on steroids" version of that though haha
Yury Molodtsov
Sounds really interesting! A few questions: 1) Will it keep updated with the latest Chrome version? 2) Are you planning to have mobile versions so I could sync data between them? Or does it sync to Google just like regular Chrome?
Yury
@y_molodtsov 1) Yes, sure, we plan to have all the latest Chromuim features 2) Today we're fully focused on the desktop version. Mobile app is something we plan in the future. To have all your bookmarks and history synced you can enable default Google synchronisation logic (chrome://settings/syncSetup) in Sidekick.
Vitaly Matveev
@yury_a @dmitry_pushkarev Hey, can anyone from your support team get back to me? I'm using Things app to send certain site links from the browser to the Things app. Apps shortcut (what it does is it reads tabs caption name and a site link and sends it to the app) works with all browsers except Sidekick, and I'd like to figure out why and resolve this issue.
Yury
@vitaly2016 Have you send us email/feedback form/intercom message? I just can't find your email to get back to you. We'll investigate the issues you've reported here and will fix it in one of nearest releases. However, the more details you provide the better )
Vitaly Matveev
@vitaly2016 @yury_a Thanks for the hint! Haven't noticed we've been having intercom all this time; just submitted my inquiry.
Janet Walker
Nice idea. Great design.
noah
This is a really cool browser I think you should be able to change the default star page Background.
Dmitry Pushkarev
@phonerebbel We have custom themes in our backlog, will get there :)
noah
This is super useful ever for people how do not work you can keep all your social media on the sidebar.
Dmitry Pushkarev
@phonerebbel Certainly, I for reason I still don't understand have 12 communication apps on sidebar, including my dog's instagram.
Joe Nicholson
I've been using the Beta version of Sidekick for the past 6 months and I'll never go back to Chrome. Of course, the crown jewel here is the app Sidebar - being able to switch between multiple accounts with a click, search an app, or get notifications is a GAME CHANGER for anyone who works online. But the features just keep going - a built-in adblocker (and tracker), an across-browser search, tab sessions, etc... This is what working online was meant to be like.
Dmitry Pushkarev
@joe_nicholson Thank you for your feedback and support!
Steven Tey
Congrats on shipping, Sidekick team! I've been a beta user for a while now and the product has been really effective in saving processing memory, which is amazing! There have been some hiccups here and there but the team is very responsive and fixes the bugs pretty quickly. Good luck!
Dmitry Pushkarev
@steventey Thank you for your support. It really means a world to us.
Rhythm Bhatnagar
Finally, a great product solving for bulky browsers. Downloaded and all set! Will share feedback in a week's time. Thanks for picking up this problem. Also congratulations on the launch 🚀
Dmitry Pushkarev
@rhythm_bhatnagar Thank you, I looking forward to it!
