I built this site because to solve my own frustration. I've always had fun hacking away at projects, but never really know what to build. Late last Friday night I decided to ask the internet what should I build. And, thinking it was funny to be meta, I asked if I should build a site about building sites. I told the internet (original Reddit post) that if I got 20 signups I'd build it over the weekend. Well, it took me a week, but I built it! I livestreamed the entire project on Twitch.tv. The next morning, I had 19 sign ups and began hacking. Let me know what you think! All feedback welcome. The two biggest cons I've received for the product so far are 1) people will steal your idea, and 2) that the audience isn't targeted. My answers are: 1) If you're worried about someone stealing your idea, you're worried about the wrong thing. Execution is everything. here's why. 2) Feedback is feedback! This can be more targeted with segmentation and groups down the line.

If you need community approval, maybe you should not do it.

@corentinvl For a side project why not? Or if you are on the fence? Maybe deciding between two ideas? Nothing bad in it.

A great idea, however, I have a question and two suggestions: 1. Doesn't Product Hunt’s own Ship (Upcoming project) solve this case a little bit? It was a bit confusing for me, maybe you can help me differentiate the two better. 2. I, for one, always create extra accounts and use email sign-up wherever possible. However, for people to discuss and give feedback when you send them this link - it may be just too much trouble. SSO with Goggle, Facebook and bunch would go a long way, I think. 3. Whilst we're on the topic - it's important to get a different perspective on the service, not only the Makers or tech savvy people who go out of their way (on your site, I mean) to give feedback. If you would've added a simple "Share on Facebook" - it would be great. Syncing comments from FB would be ideal (not sure if that's accomplishable without their Facebook Comments in-place commenting system, which I don't recommend) Sorry if something that I say comes over as rude or patronizing, just one person's feedback.

@mneveroff Good points, not rude or patronizing at all! Thanks for the feedback, here are my thoughts: 1. While ProductHunt's Ship does accomplish this somewhat, it's less of a leaderboard. Also, I've tried Ship and the features are somewhat limited with the paid membership starting at $80/mo. 🧐 2. Great suggestion. Will implement! 3. Definitely like the idea to share your post on social. Helps get a broader audience and more perspectives. Facebook comments is a maybe–I feel like Facebook is "uncool", and people generally feel less easy with direct integration like that, but I'll think about it!

@elijahmurray regrading the last one - doesn't really matter where to share. The core suggestion is to somehow syphon the feedback from these channels and put all of them in one place, so the Maker isn't obligated to check all of these. May be a bit difficult with all the crackdown on the API usage of social networks lately, tho.
Elijah Murray
@mneveroff Yeah, that makes sense. I'll look into it–maybe even if it's just a push to social, but then tracks the link (and maybe tries to scrape it?) to a dashboard for the Maker…

Awesome product for makers and figuring out what to ship and what the customers want

Pros:

It’s great for concept testing

Cons:

Needs to build a bigger following and community

I like it, but there doesn't seem to be much of a profile feature. I've posted my own idea and commented on a couple of others, but don't appear to be able to track that interaction. I can't even find my submitted idea to find out if it's had any interaction at all.
Elijah Murray
@samjohnson__ great feedback, I'll be implementing some features along this like this week

Love it. It's serves a purpose akin to a preliminary Kickstarter or Indiegogo campaign. I frequently want to know what people think without having to fully flesh out an idea first.

The idea is awesome! Have you thought about seeding it with ideas? Maybe using some kind of Twitter algorithm or parsing ideas from similar websites. It's difficult to get recurring visitors with only so much content.

I’d also like to add that the most talented people in the world tend to have a continuously full plate and aren’t necessarily snooping around the internet seeking to steal ideas. Great stuff. Sign me up.

@elijahmurray I love it. Watched some of your live-stream. Do you want to do a live-stream on my youtube channel with me to talk about your project(s)? I sent you a message through your site's pop-up chat window.

Really cool product and a clear need. Test your ideas.

Like what you've done so far. My suggest would be to allow filtering of ideas by category and/or tag so users can more easily find ideas that they have an interest in. I saw one big list and I stopped looking at ideas quickly because I didn't want to read through all of them.

Definitely needed
