Hi 👋 everyone! My name is Elena, and I’m the co-founder of rubbish.love 🤗 I’ve followed Product Hunt for a long time, and am excited to finally share something with the community 🚀 @eminisrafil @felipe_melivilu and I have been talking about trash for years, and are dedicating our energies to building tools that make cleaning up litter fun and easy! Our mission is to empower communities to use data to improve shared public spaces, together. Over the past year, we’ve: 🤖 Used data to cut cigarette litter by 46% with just one disposal in our pilot 🗺 Mapped data and helped deliver services to underserved neighborhoods 🎪 Dramatically reduced litter at large conferences & events 📈 Uncovered seasonal and local trends in litter 🌍 Compared cross country litter clean ups The Rubbish app is available on iOS for free to use. You can map the litter on your block, as you pick up or as an audit of your street. You can categorize litter as you go, or use our “Tag Later” mode to move at a faster pace. We intend to use machine learning for the categorization step in the future - we actually got a shout out in WWDC last year in the ML Keynote! We have taken a stand against typical trash-related colors, so the bright pink is important for us to keep things fun! We want to take the stigma away from litter, with a bright new approach to an old problem. In addition to the app, we’ve also patented a smart litter picker-upper, which connects directly to the app and let’s you pick up litter while taking pictures and collecting information! The Rubbish beam has LED lights that can be controlled from the app. Felipe is currently making these by hand (there’s a 3D printer in his closet 👷‍♂️, which used to be in Emin’s bedroom). We have identified a partner who can help us scale them! If you’re interested, let me know at elena@rubbish.love Next up for us is the launch of our in-app Cleanup Marketplace, where people will be able to identify a block that needs cleaning and residents will be rewarded for cleaning up! We are also speaking to companies now about sponsorships, custom branded rubbish beams, and using our platform to fulfill CSR or EPA mandates. As a special PH launch treat, we’re going to have you all choose the next part of San Francisco that we clean! Vote here (https://elena930311.typeform.com...) and we’ll live stream it on reddit r/pan next week. Drop us a line on PH, email me at elena@rubbish.love or twitter @rubbish_love - happy to talk trash anytime! Until soon friends ✨ Lane

I've heard about a similar idea a few times right now. I participated in a Hackathon not that long ago where a similar MVP was produced. Great job here!
Elena Guberman
@doomhammer thanks! do you remember the name of the MVP? would love to look them up.
Piotr Gaczkowski
@elena_guberman not really, but the Hackathon was called Hack4Change

I've been following the rubbish project for a while (Dec 2018) so I'm excited to see this PH launch! Feel free to reach out to me or our team at Mapbox if you'd like some tips on integrating a more customized map experience (Facebook, Snapchat, Lonely Planet, and Ancestry are just a few examples of teams driving user engagement with Mapbox maps). Congrats!
Stephen Gheysens
Also, I just caught the invitation to "talk trash" 🤣 👏
Elena Guberman
@segheysens 🤣 who doesn't love a good pun?
Ryan Hoover
You turned trash clean up into a game. Brilliant. ✨
Elena Guberman

Love this! And especially seeing what's happened to the streets in SF during the lockdown, easier, safe ways to clean up streets is so needed. Congrats to the team!
Elena Guberman
@ashley_mw Thank you!

Lilly Wunsch
Such a cool idea and so needed
Elena Guberman
@xolilly thanks so much! We agree 😉
Jacqueline von Tesmar
Love this initiative! My husband and I clean up the beach we go to each time and gather one or two grocery bags of trash. It makes me feel like I'm doing my part to keep the environment beautiful. I will say categorizing the trash would be difficult.
Elena Guberman
@jacqvon thanks for the cleanups that you've done 💜 Our app has a categorize later feature, so that you can still pick up quickly. The goal is to have this automatically done, and give you a breakdown of what you picked up (along with maps). We've used info like this to put up a cigarette disposal in just the right spot and it cut cigarette litter by 46% in just 2 weeks!
kate walling
Love what you are doing to help clean our streets! So needed in many urban centers!
Elena Guberman
@katewalling thanks Kate!
Gustavo Antonetti
This is so great! Congrats!!
Paulina Salach Antonetti
You guys are rock stars! Thank you for being a driving force in the fight against litter. We need this in Puerto Rico!!!
Elena Guberman
@paulina_salach_antonetti yes! we're coming for that litter soon 🧹
Henry Yang
I've been following yall, very cool product! Love the maps feature. Was wondering if there are any ways to get plugged in to cleanup group in SF?
Elena Guberman
@henryyang89 thanks for following the journey! We post about cleanups on Instagram and Facebook (give us a follow!) and sign up to our newsletter at www.rubbish.love Also, look up SF Rubbishers on Nextdoor - we do group (socially distant) cleanups monthly. In the coming months, we are launching our cleanup marketplace where you can sponsor a block to get cleaned or clean a block to get rewards 🤩
Andrew 💥

Adam Dexter
Excited to see you live! It's been quite a journey and you're doing amazing things!
Postmodern Work
I like that it’s one of those products that address actual problems outside tech bubble. Though i guess there’s no clear cut answer whether problems like this should be solved on governmental/legislation level or consumer.
Elena Guberman
@damjanski thanks so much!
Gemma Curl
This is very cool Elena. I would love to continue to hear success stories of the impact on litter reduction on the site.
Elena Guberman
@gemmaangelina thanks Gemma! We'll continue to share 😊
