@dropthebas Hi Basil, I look into adding soundcloud login/save favorites to soundcloud account/etc things like that soon. But it won't come right away because this is a side project from my real 9-5 job .
@dropthebas Hi again, I updated the webapp to allow users to connect their accounts to SoundCloud. The only thing that will happen right now is if you are connected to SoundCloud, when you Like or Unlike a song, it will also like/unlike the song on your SoundCloud account. Any other features wanted?
@prattarazzi Hi Eddie, I am really glad you like it. This was created as a side project for myself over the past few months to easily discover new songs from Soundcloud but now I decided to share with the world with the hopes that a few other people might find it useful. So, this makes me really happy.
I like the product. Things that could be improved:
1. Continue to play songs after screen saver is on.
2. Continue to play songs when focus is in another tab.
3. Start playing new track when I switch categories.
4. Show songs list instead of album covers :)
5. +1 for iOS app
I think you should change the color of the playback controls. I barely saw them, because firstly I thought the site doesn't have something like this :D. Also, would be nice if you could log in with SC credentials.
@remusbaltariu Hi Remus, I am the developer of this webapp, I will play with the colors on the progress bar sometime soon and try to come up with something easier to see than light gray bar with white icons.
As a soundcloud addict, I appreciate this product. Though from a superuser perspective, I'd recommend maybe adding a 'list-view' for the songs. Also, the ability to "heart" and "repost" to soundcloud would be incredible. Do you have plans to expand the genres? How are you classifying the genres by the way?
@j_nce I will add List View to my list of things to do for the future. But the amount of work I put in is going to depend on if people use it because list view would be a decent amount of front end work. First, I need to learn promotion and work on getting social media sharing links and things like that first for each track. For the genre's, it looks at the genre the artist used on the track on SoundCloud and then I try to generalize it into either Indie/Hip-Hop/Electronic. So basically if the genre field on SoundCloud contains 'folk' or 'indie pop' or 'punk' I tag it as Indie, if it contains 'r&b', 'rap' 'hiphop' etc I tag it Hip-Hop, 'house', 'dubstep', etc tag it Electronic. There will sometimes be tracks tagged incorrectly. At the moment I won't split into additional genres because that will lead to more mistakes right now but it has crossed my mind to expand and refine the process at some point.
@ppaslier It's not personalized but if you have an account it gives you the ability to 'star' the songs you liked so you can go to 'My Favorites' tab and listen to your own playlist. Each category/genre is populated by searching a couple social media sites and ranking the songs based on a simple algorithmn
Q to the creators: what's the function of search supposed to be? I expected I could type a genre name and get a custom chart, but I actually only got tracks that had that phrase in the title or artist name and are unlikely to be the most popular songs in that tag on SC right now. (I typed 'trap').
@basgras for now that is all search is (match each word against the artist or title). i could have it search the genres/tags that the artist gives the song on SoundCloud as well if that's what you are looking for. Any artists that put 'trap' in the tag and you search for the word trap it would return all those songs. Let me know if that's good enough?
@jayzinc Well, do user research and see what people expect.. I might be an anomaly :) However, since Rising.fm is about charts, you would expect the search to be a tool for seeing charts in niches. So I would say your suggestion's good enough, but again, ask around. I might be an anomaly.
Great product! I could see this being a tab I keep open all the time. Would love the ability to favorite tracks to my soundcloud. I'd pay for an Android app as well.
@livejamie I updated the webapp to allow users to connect their Rising.fm accounts to SoundCloud. The only thing that will happen right now is if you are connected to SoundCloud, when you Like or Unlike a song, it will also like/unlike the song on your SoundCloud account. Any other features wanted?
@colemercer For the past two years I strictly used Hypem.com, it's a nice site, but it's got some problems with discovery. Hypem is great for the 'Popular' page and friends feed, etc but for me I want to discover more than just the Top 50 from Popular. I lived on the 'Latest/Fresh' pages on Hypem but I'd have to go through 50 pages to find just a couple songs I might like every few days. With my webapp, the order of songs is generated based on scanning social media to see how much chatter there is on the track and then assigns it a score. This score gets updated each day. I find this simple formula works really well my charts. The purpose of my app is to always see fresh new songs without having to go through 50 pages like on Hypem. As for SoundCloud's charts, I don't think they are updated enough from what I remember and SoundCloud in general has a big problem with discovery, hence why I used Hypem all the time. The 'New & Hot' charts are pretty good but has 15 days worth of tracks it looks like and only displays 50. The 'New' tab on my site only includes songs I found on social media within the past 48 hours and shows 100 of them. I think SoundCloud charts need more work. I love SoundCloud but I don't like it for discovery.
I am glad SoundCloud allows sites like Hypem, HillyDilly, and now mine to exist and stream from SoundCloud with custom players. I hope you never change this. I am a little worried what's going to happen to sites that stream from SoundCloud with the news about the paid subs coming.
