Hi Product Hunt! Excited to be here and to get your feedback. 😸 Propel is the community for future builders. Emily, Scott, and I started it when we realized that peers and mentors had been crucial to our own (moderate) success, but there was no dedicated place for people like us to come together without spending a ton of money or quitting our day jobs, which none of us were ready to do yet. Since launching this summer, we’ve grown into a tight-knit community of a couple hundred members and dozens of advisors. We were excited (and pleasantly surprised tbh) to see members of the community hire each other, invest in each other’s companies, team up to start side hustles, and build an incredibly positive support network. We’ve built out a cohort system, mentorship, mini-courses, a curated job board, off-the-record events, and more thanks to lots of input from the community itself. We’ve also started working on this full time! 😬 As we head into 2021, we know a lot of folks are thinking about their next step, whether that’s getting a promotion, switching to a new role, or starting their own thing. We wanted to start talking about Propel more publicly to invite new members to take that journey alongside all of us. If you apply to join, you’ll get access to everything mentioned above and more. What else would be helpful to you in your journey to be a builder? We’re always looking for new things to build for the community. 🚀

Propel has been a great way to grow my network with people all over the company, in different stages of their careers, and in different industries. Propel currently has a few learning tracks. After the first few sessions of the learning track, Launching a Business, I was inspired to start thinking more critically about my ideas and knew I was not alone. Emily and I created a new group called Idea Propeller. This enabled me to share my ideas with a group of other propellers in a very open and safe place. What is most exciting about Idea Propeller is that it creates a forum for propellers to share and receive feedback on tactical next steps along with big picture questions about where the world is going in regards to their idea/industry. Definitely recommend joining this community

@schaffer_ochstein thanks for always collaborating with me, can't wait for more of these!
Vedika Jain
Connecting with others is one of the deepest human desires we have, yet we've seen at Weekend Fund that builders at the earlier stages are lacking community. Way to go, Propel!
Tom Guthrie
Thanks, @vedika_jain! Community is so important.
Lola Lafia
Incredible product. Can't wait to join.

@lola_lafia You're an inspiration to us, Lola! Everyone should go check out Schefs! https://schefs.us/

@taguthrie Too kind, Tom! Community builders unite!

Joining Propel has been a bright spot of 2020! I've been able to connect with other operators at early-stage companies and talk through challenges that they have worked through before. It's a group of bright and ambitious builders!
Emily Pik
Thank you, @elizabeth_stockton! We're fortunate you're a part of this ✨
Eric Tarczynski
Super cool idea. Communities (particularly online ones) are only going to increase in their importance moving fwd
Tom Guthrie
@eric_tarczynski 100% agree - thanks, Eric!

Propel has been my professional development channel the past few months. From learning tracks to meeting other people like me, I feel more confident in my day job and as I continue to explore new ideas. Highly recommend if you're looking to find people with high energy around creating and building!
Tom Guthrie
Thanks, @jacqueline_albright! Such an honor to have you as an early member of the community - we're better for your presence :)

I've been on the OneJob Newsletter for maybe a year now and it is consistently one of the best ways to get an interview. Interesting jobs but not ones that see hundreds and hundreds of applicants so you have a shot at getting noticed. Propel is interesting to me because it is full of people in what @skidder cals "person of leisure" phase where they are thinking about what's next for them. I have found in my experience these communities are the best place to make conenctions and figure out next steps.
Tom Guthrie
Thanks, Mike! Appreciate you subscribing to onejob as well :)
Bobbi Perreault
Great idea - reminds me of the Bay Area. But totally remote. From my family of entrepreneurs to yours, best wishes in this endeavor.

Propel (combined with podcasts and newsletters) has saved me hundreds of thousands of dollars I otherwise would have spent on a formal business school education. Proud to be a member of the community.
Tom Guthrie
@aub_thread Proud to have you as part of the community! And happy we can save you some serious $$ 😂

Tom Guthrie
Thanks, Mario! Looking forward to more collabs in the future :)

Propel has been incredibly valuable for me this year. In a world where it is only harder to grow your network (@ 2020), Propel has helped dramatically. Beyond that, I have been wildly impressed by the community. Couldn't speak highly enough of Propel
Emily Pik
@george_matelich thank you for being such a key part of our west coast presence!
Aaron Cohn
What are some things you think Propel is uniquely doing better/different than some of the other programs out there doing similar-ish things?
Tom Guthrie
@aaron_cohn Good question! A few things we think about: 1) We're a community first. That may be a little difficult to think about tangibly, but if you talk to our members and advisors, the give-first, generous environment creates a very different experience. 2) We reach people before they start building and often before they even know what they want to build. We believe that's a crucial time when we can have the largest positive impact. 3) Our membership model (a reasonable monthly membership fee) is designed such that most of our members keep their day jobs and use Propel as a way to advance their longer term career objectives, rather than quitting their jobs and focusing on this full-time. We believe this helps us reach a lot of talented people that otherwise would be excluded from groups like this.
Will Robbins
Great! Communities like this can be life-changing. It sounds cheesy or grandiose to say, but it's true.
Tom Guthrie
Thanks @whrobbins - agreed. So many communities have been life-changing for me and I'm excited to be building one.

Tom is one of the most impressive and entrepreneurial individuals I’ve met. The Propel platform is no different than I’d expect from him and this incredible team. Tom is a natural community builder and entrepreneurship guru, and the best person I can think of to pursue this model. The importance of tight knit communities was growing pre-Covid, and of course accelerated as of March 2020. It’s awesome to see what Tom has built and I couldn’t be more excited to continue watching him and the Propel community grow.
Tom Guthrie
@maxwellscomment Thanks, Max - really appreciate it!
Trevor Sookraj
Phenomenal community for people who love building, congrats Tom & team!
Tom Guthrie
Thanks, Trevor! Really appreciate your feedback + support
Paul Klein
I've been a member of Propel since June. It's my favorite community, with a network of operators across all different industries. I'm continually wowed by each new person I meet there and have become close friends with several of them. Kudos to Emily and Tom for curating such a great group of folks!
Emily Pik
Thanks @paul_klein! Super grateful for your continued input and energy in the community
@JohnThomey
As a member of Propel and someone building a startup, Propel has been one of the best investments I've made to grow my skillset. The members are the best and I've learned so much in a short time.
Emily Pik
@johnthomey we're so glad to hear that and love being able to cheer you on!
Josh Ford
This looks really useful, sharing with our whole team!
Edward Garcia
Great work!!
Brent Willess
Great idea and even better community. Propel is amazing and can't recommend it enough!
