I think there was a collective cheer from the Australian startup sector when our new Prime Minister announced the innovation agenda.
Once announced, I think people were a bit disappointed that more money wasn't directly accessible, but my understanding of the planned policies are that they're going to remove many of the road blocks that might hinder or prevent innovation in the Australian startup scene. So I get it.
One concern I did immediately have though is how much of that money will be spent on advertising the programme. Sure enough, about a month after the $1b innovation agenda was announced, the govt announced that it was allocating $28m towards advertising.
I actually just tweeted earlier today about the full-page colour ad I saw in the newspaper, so it's really interesting to hear Wyatt discuss that issue specifically. Despite his points, I still can't help but think there are better ways to spend those dollars than on newspaper and television. This is meant to be about INNOVATION, right?
