Oh, a potato! is an AI-powered iOS app that helps you find, save and plan recipes using ingredients you already have in the name of reducing food waste.
Hi PH π, we're Radu and Dalma, the makers of OH, a potato. We help you find, save, plan, and cook recipes using ingredients you already have in the name of reducing food waste.
The name OH, a potato! comes from us finding an old, forgotten, and decrepit potato at the back of our pantry one day. This made us realize that we aren't doing a great job using the ingredients we have on hand before they go bad (don't worry, we still cooked the potato).
It turns out we are not alone, β of the world's food is thrown away by households, with 95-115 kg of food being wasted per year per person. People waste food primarily because they fail to meal plan or stick to a meal plan.
We tried multiple apps to solve this problem for ourselves, but all of them were missing something. Either they are recipe managers that require manual input or can't save recipes from social media like Instagram reels and TikTok videos, or they don't have an integrated ingredients manager that helps you find recipes using those ingredients and so on. So, we decided to build an app for our own use.
We've been building, refining, and using OH, a potato! for 2 years now, and we want to share it with all of you. Here's what it can do:
OH, a potato! can save recipes from anywhere:
- Give OH, a potato! a link, and it'll extract recipes from anywhere, including YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, using LLMs to parse recipe details automatically.
- Use OH, a potato!'s built-in scanner to save and automatically extract recipes from your favorite cookbooks using LLMs to parse recipe details automatically.
OH, a potato! can help you find new recipes:
- Search the web for recipes directly from OH, a Potato! and get cleaned-up, easy-to-read recipes that you can meal plan instantly.
- Generate LLM recipes using ingredients you have on hand.
OH, a potato! helps you meal plan and not waste ingredients:
- Set a meal planning day and get reminders.
- Get recipe suggestions based on ingredients you already have from your saved or LLM-generated recipes.
- Build a grocery list quickly for missing ingredients and keep your grocery store trips focused.
- Share your meal plan and recipes with others via household sharing.
Try OH, a potato! (1 month free) out and tell us what you think.
@radu_lupu Hello! I find this idea as a fun way to help the planet by not wasting food and also this can help people safe money! I would love to promote this app on both my TikTok and YouTube pages if you are ok with it! Please let me know!
@radu_lupu Impressive idea and I love how clear the vision is, to reduce waste. I can identify with that! I wish you the best of luck because if you succeed I'll be happy to use your services to reduce the amount of food I waste. π ππ»
Zero-waste when talking about meal planners really caught my eye! As someone whoβs constantly finding forgotten avocados, Iβm super excited to try this out. Congratulations on your launch and brilliant idea!
This is such a great idea! My household wastes a lot of food π€ You've built something super useful and your messaging is great. I can sense a lot of positive vibes just looking at your website. Downloaded! πNice work @radu_lupu and best of luck!
Hey Radu! Is it possible to create a folder with, let's say, a bunch of recipes for dinner with friends and then share it with them so everyone can check it out and comment? Do you consider something like this for the future?
@memphys_sk Not yet, but weβll think about it! Currently, you can share households and invite all family members to contribute to meal planning activities. We thought that involving the entire family has a significant impact on reducing food waste
@priyanka27 Iβm glad to hear! Tell us what you think once you tried it out and donβt forget about the 1 month free promo code we offer for the PH community! π₯
I thought many times that an app like this was needed. Counting calories should be automated. The next step is to have a cam always recording and scanning what you put in your mouth and skip having to take pictures. But it would also be a bit freaky having something record every move you make.
Good luck with the launch, Radu and Dalma! Your branding is hilarious! And a wonderful idea for a very good cause! Can't wait to try, saw you have a premium version, what's the price?
thank you very much @pixelpirat! Potato asks for the meagre toll of $1.9 per month (with a yearly subscription). Let us know what you think about OH, a potato's effect on your meal planning.
This is such a great idea. And I just love the branding. I cannot praise it enough. Great job, guys. Congratulations on the PH launch! Rooting for oooooh, a potato!
This is really great, I often throw away food and I even thought how great it would be to cook something with it. Fantastic for getting new inspiration! I'm really looking forward to trying it out
Congrats on the launch agyer 2 years. I like the idea a lot ! Does Oh, a potato! consider dietary restrictions? For example, can it filter recipes based on gluten-free, vegan, or other dietary needs?
I m launching AI Notebook App today. Feel free to check it out:)
Thank you @sandy_kong and congrats on AI Notebook, we'll try it out! Yes OH, a potato! has diets built in and you can search / filter recipes by diet or ask PotatoGPT to generate recipes following a specific diet.
Congratulations on the launch, @radu_lupu and Dalma! As a marketer, managing my time efficiently and staying healthy is SO important! Oh, a potato will make my meal planning so much easier.
I love that it uses ingredients I already have, reducing waste and saving me trips to the store.
I'm curious, how does the built-in scanner handle handwritten recipes from family cookbooks?
Only one way to find out @ginasapien :D. Let us know how it performs on your family cookbooks. We use iOS's built in text recognition (e.g. same one that detects text in your photo album) and are getting good results as long as the text is legible.
Love the name! Unfortuantely it's not available on Android so I can't try it. I wish you had a web version too.
(BTW, your footer says 2023, you may wanna update that).
Thank you @footer for checking our footer! Deployed 2024 :D. We're trying to first nail down the experience on iOS (on which both of us use the app on) and then expand to more platforms. Once we launch our next major update meant to motivate you to meal plan consistently we'll visit Android. Although I really want an excuse to buy a new iPad Pro so might just start there :P
Love the branding you have going on: the name, the graphics... well done team! Just visited your website and read that you need to import the recipes first. Is there also a way to enter the ingredients you have and let it browse the entire internet to find suitable recipes? Would be cool! Anyways, congrats on the launch! π₯π₯
Thanks @stefan_bader! Yes, you have two options: 1) PotatoGPT generates 10 recipes at a time with ingredients you have saved in your fridge and 2) Have PotatoGPT search the web for you and return ready to meal plan recipes with formatted ingredient and instructions lists.
