I have taken every paid Obsidian course available, and Flight School stands apart from them. In Flight School, you are not passively observing someone demonstrate how to use Obsidian but are actively engaged in the process of 'earning your wings' to pilot the 'LYT Ship' around your knowledge. As a Flight School Cadette, you will begin with Fundamental Training and progress to Pilot Training, Instrument Training, and finally Resources Training. Along with the training, I had access to the Flight School Community, enabling cadets to ask questions and interact with other course participants. If you are looking to master the fundamentals or brush up on your Obsidian skills, this is an excellent place to start.

@stephenapwales That's some high praise, thanks Stephen for detailing your overview and experience here!

@stephenapwales Hello Cadet! It is good to hear from your good experience with Obsidian Flight School. Would you mind leaving a review? (There is a happy/sad face at the top of this discussion)

@stephenapwales Super useful to know, thanks for sharing your perspective as someone who has tried all the available courses!
Dan Lardi
@stephenapwales So grateful to be reading this from you, Stephen! Thank you for your support. :)

@stephenapwales I came to Obsidian because all my other systems didn't work for me, but I was overwhelmed by all that was possible with Obsidian. Nick and his Flight School made Obsidian work for me. Sure, I'm still learning, yet with Nick's help, Obsidian quickly became useful.

Hello Product Hunt! I'm Nick 👋 I created Obsidian Flight School because I wanted to create an immersive and active way for people to actually train themselves to get better at using Obsidian. I'm calling in this training paradigm: "Lean Forward Learning". Once you get fast with Obsidian, then you can really start thinking closer to the "Speed of Thought". 🤦‍♂️ Problem Working with ideas is hard. Making leaps of insights with your notes is even harder. We have too many lost notes. And it doesn't help hopping from app to shiny app. Well, you finally found Obsidian, but how do you use it? That is what Obsidian Flight School is for. Get ready to work faster than ever before. But to do this, you need to work on the right stuff and get the reps. That's right. YOU have to put in the work. Flight School is your guide. 🙌 Solution If you want to improve at using an app like Obsidian then stop passively watching videos. And start actually practicing the skills to work—and think—faster. Flight School will help you do the following: ⚡️ Work faster than ever before. 🧐 Learn the best ways to rapidly create and open notes, effectively utilize Autocomplete, and effortlessly refactor text. 🧢 Get reps and drill exercises & simulations to unlock your full potential. 🎨 Customize your themes, display panels, plugins, hotkeys, and functions to fine-tune your thinking experience. 🚀 Fly around your notes and ideas faster than ever before 💯💯💯💯 More than 400 people experienced the pre-launch of Flight School. It is generating the intended results: people are getting faster, more skilled, and more confident with Obsidian. 🎁 Get $25 off from Jan 5-7 only. 🎯 My deepest goal with Obsidian Flight School is that it inspires other teachers in online education to incorporate the paradigm of *Lean Forward Learning* into their own educational products and services. The Lean Forward paradigm is an extension of the "Learn by doing" theory of education set forth by *John Dewey* in the early 1900's. However, the Lean Forward paradigm differs is that it outlines principles specifically with online education in mind. I believe online programs designed like Flight School are just the beginning of a deeper level of digital learning. Sitting back and passively watching instructional videos is easy, but the results are far less powerful. Instead, the “Flight School formula" forces you to grab the controls and pilot the ship that you fly around your PKM Planet. 📽 If you want to learn more about how I incorporated "Lean Forward Learning" into Obsidian Flight School, check out this video: https://youtu.be/d4sB9eJVLLA 🗣 I can't wait to get your feedback today. Ask away and I'll do my best to answer!
TfT Hacker
@nickmilo exciting development. Very glad to have this course available to the community.
Nick Milo
@roam_hacker As always, appreciate your voice in the community. Thanks for your support here!
Ra'ed Marji
@nickmilo do you go into how to structure notes, folders and tags in flight school?
Dan Lardi
Hello @hla3mi, Dan here from the LYT Team. Thanks for asking this. Those are more focused in developing your PKM System. Our upcoming LYT workshop can help you with that. Please feel free to sign up in our website to join the waitlist. Obsidian Flight School focuses more on helping you develop your technical fluency in using Obsidian with your desktop computer.
Bruno
The flightschool training will turbocharge your Obsidian skills. Flight school incorporates the latest neuroscience concepts on how we learn and is a very effective learning environment. Regardless if you are a beginner or advanced, you will improve your skills and speed with Obsidian. Next to the learning experience, it's also a pleasure to use, thoroughly enjoyable!
Dan Lardi
@digintelosint We really appreciate this, Bruno! Thank you. :)
Nick Milo
@digintelosint Hey Bruno, thanks for your perspective. I know you are up on the latest with neuroscience, and I'm actually curious: Is there is a specific concept in particular you see in Flight School? I don't mean to put you on the spot, just curious!
James E. Turner
Just bought Flight School (a total no-brainer for me) and I'm SO excited about it! You can tell from @nickmilo's fantastic YouTube videos on Obsidian that this is going to be an engaging and worthwhile investment of your time. I love how (in said YouTube videos) Nick shows, rather than just telling, how it works, demonstrating techniques by building up a series of notes (the sweeping saga of NoteStar and NeverNote) and explaining every step of the way. I already know that Flight School is going to be like that, but with ME doing the making and it is exactly what I need to bump up my Obsidian skills to the point that I feel "fluent" in this brilliant little PKM system.
Bianca Pereira
@jturnercreative Excited to have you as a new Flight School cadet! Let us know what you enjoy most in the simulator 🙂
Nick Milo
@jturnercreative Happy to hear James. Even in the "space" of flying around our notes, there will be some turbulence, but that will be part of the process. Hope you enjoy!
Garrett Welson
I took Nick's LYT workshop and he's a great teacher and thinker about knowledge management and notes. Obsidian is great but there definitely is a mental barrier to using it at first until it "clicks" — I haven't taken this course, but I'm confident Nick is probably one the best-positioned people out there to help people learn. I'm curious to check this out!
Bianca Pereira
@garrettwelson I agree, the faster we break that barrier, the earlier we convert Obsidian from a mental barrier into a thought accelerator. We would love to have you onboard Garrett!
Nick Milo
@garrettwelson @biancapereira Ooo, nicely said Bianca! And Garrett, thanks for sharing your perspective and experience :)
Jim Keenan
I bought it immediately! This is the Obsidian product I have been waiting for. Thank You! :-)
Dan Lardi
@jim_keenan We're glad you joined us, Jim! Please let us know how it goes for you. :)
Nick Milo
@jim_keenan Fly on Cadet! Even in the "space" of flying around our notes, there will be some turbulence, but that will be part of the process. Hope you enjoy :)
Brent Johnson
Obsidian is a fantastic, and fantastically flexible, tool, but I have not found many resources to help me understand how to use it effectively. Obsidian Flight School not only fills this void, but fills it in a way which goes far beyond current standards of self-paced education resources, dominated as they are by courses which merely require you to watch videos and perhaps do a little reading, Nick Milo has taken a different, much more thoughtful - and much more difficult to implement! - approach with Obsidian Flight School. It is a form of programmed instruction emphasizing hands-on experience, which is the best (only?) way to really absorb what you are supposedly learning.
Dan Lardi
@brentrandaljohnson Your feedback is really valuable to read, Brent. Thank you for sharing this with us and for your support. :)
Nick Milo
@brentrandaljohnson Many thanks Brent. This means a lot because I know you have a high bar and discerning taste, so it is nice to hear what resonated for you!

Nick Milo has helped me get so much from Obsidian as a proper note-making and thinking tool. His intro videos got me started. His LYT Kit got me set up right from the start. His regular videos and interviews with other great note-makers inspired me. His simple yet powerful concepts of Linking Your Thinking, Maps of Content, exhortations to not be an info collector, but a note-Maker....guided my humble progress. And I love the Forward Leaning Learning concept. The best teachers I've had in my life have always got us doing it to learn it...as a group, so we learn from, support, and inspire each other too. I'd dearly love to do Flight School. But after closing everything down 18mths ago to look after my wife, our finances are dire. I can't afford it this time round (even at this crazy good value price)....I need to focus on climbing out of the bottom layer of Maslow's triangle first. But doing it is a firm goal for 2022, just not yet.
Nick Milo
@ianmacmillan It sounds like a really nice journey from all of those resources, thanks Ian. (I DM'ed you separately on Twitter btw.)
Bob Lucore
Nick is simply the best for understanding Personal Knowledge Management, and how to effectively use Obsidian for networked note-making. I have dabbled in an early release of the flight school. It is fantastic! Congrats on the launch Nick!
Bianca Pereira
@bob_lucore We are glad you enjoyed Bob! +1 to networked note-making. Thank you for the review.
Nick Milo
@bob_lucore Many thanks Bob. Depending on where you are, the new version is available. You can check out the changelog to see what's new in our private forum area here: https://forum.linkingyourthinkin...
Yaaqoub Eliyyahu
Placed my order today! Thank you Milo for offering an affordable program to help us with Obsidian. Truly, Greatly Appreciated!!! I am struggling to learn Obsidian. I have watched many YouTube videos and ordered 2 video classes from other sites, but I always come back to you. You explain everything slowly & in great detail, especially for the "novice" people like myself.
Nick Milo
@yaaqoub777 Really appreciate your kind words. Let me know in the forum if you have any struggles getting started. Even in the "space" of flying around our notes, there will be some turbulence, but that will be part of the process. Hope you enjoy!
Yaaqoub Eliyyahu
@nickmilo I downloaded the Flight School 1.0 file to my Macbook desktop. Then I created a new vault "Obsidian Flight School, uploaded the file to the new vault. Challenge, I do not see anything in the vault. Thoughts???
Nick Milo
@yaaqoub777 Hey Yaaqoub, thanks for asking. I know what the problem is. I already answered you question in our forum actually 😁 Check it out here: https://forum.linkingyourthinkin...
Jeremy Bradshaw
A very clear and concise way to start to develop your thinking. We are the sum of our thoughts. This system allows me to create deeper and more meaningful connections between my thoughts to become a better me.
Nick Milo
@jeremy_bradshaw Many thanks Jeremy. Hope you enjoyed the format!
Simon Barker
This looks great, I like the look of obsidian but there seems to be a reasonable mental barrier to entry to getting started so keen to learn more
Dan Lardi
@simon_barker1 Thank you for the kind words, Simon! We look forward to hearing more about your experience and progress with Flight School. :)
Nick Milo
@simon_barker1 Some people take to Obsidian like a fish to water. Regardless, we all are wondering "What is possible" with it. I hope Flight School can push you in that direction. As mentioned elsewhere, even in the "space" of flying around our notes, there will be some turbulence, but that will be part of the process. Hope you enjoy!
Dave de Bakker
When I learned about Obsidian, it were Nick's YouTube video's that made me realize its potential applications. I love his combination of an objective stance on tools and his opinion on thinking. I followed two of Nick's courses and I highly recommend all of his work. Flight School is a great product and will make you fly using Obsidian.
Bianca Pereira
@dave_de_bakker Hi Dave, we really appreciate your feedback and you being part of our thinking community. Would you mind leaving a review? (you just need to go to the happy/sad smiles at the top of the discussions)
Nick Milo
@dave_de_bakker Likewise Dave, I've appreciate your perspective and stance throughout the many interactions we've had, including the one for later today!
Sam Julien
I can't speak highly enough about all of the PKM and Obsidian material that Nick creates. He has a creative, hands-on approach to education and his background in professional video editing causes his production quality to be second-to-none. Obsidian has totally changed the way I work, and Nick's material is no small part of that!
Nick Milo
@sam_julien1 It's funny, I worked with crazy focus on being the best assistant editor and editor in Hollywood, but with our Youtube videos, I gotta give the credit to Dan Lardi! Thanks also, to you Sam. Your help and resources have been used and greatly appreciated 🙏
Keaton Sondreal
Obsidian is an incredibly powerful program that can have a steep learning curve at first. I dabbled with Obsidian for almost a year but always felt like I was using a fraction of its potential. I've taken quite a few self-guided Obsidian courses and Obsidian Flight School really stands apart from all of the rest. By having the Flight School built within an Obsidian vault, students are constantly reinforcing their skills at navigating, utilizing, and customizing Obsidian at every turn through Nick's Lean Forward Learning paradigm. The drills are well paced and thoughtfully designed. The Flight School community forum has allowed fellow students to help each other solve problems or share workflows as well. If you're looking to take your Obsidian abilities to the next level, I promise you this course is unlike anything else out there!
Nick Milo
@keatonkeaton I'm thankful for the context your provided here and for your experience with Flight School. Always a pleasure Keaton!
Gregory Barker
I have been following Nick Milo for awhile now on YouTube and in emails and have been inspired by his approach to note-making, sense-making, and personal knowledge management. I have been using Obsidian for a few months and am looking forward to learning how to use it more effectively! Thank you Nick for making an entry-level product!
Bianca Pereira
@gregory_barker Glad to have you as a new Flight School Cadet! Let us know how your simulation times are going 🙂
Nick Milo
@gregory_barker My pleasure. Yep, it's definitely trying to be an entry-level product because I realize the workshop is a big purchase. They cover completely vastly territory, but I think there is enough in Flight School to make it worthwhile.
Ian Greig
Nick is a coach -- and a very good one -- as well as an acknowledged expert on the Zettelkasten school of knowledge management and using the top note-making app repository out there, Obsidian. Nick has established his reputation through Linking Your Thinking. Top recommendation from this author/speaker/ publisher. @user Ian Greig
Nick Milo
@user @ian_greig2 Kind of you Ian, I appreciate hearing your perspective as an author, speaker, and publisher.
Örjan Lindahl
Self paced, a good mix between: how to use Obsidian in a smart way - and drills to put commands into muscle memory. High quality.
Bianca Pereira
@orjan_lindahl It is all about the reps! Thanks for the review Örjan.
Didier Varlot
Every time I receive an email from LYT I take time apart and read it carefully and apply whatever is explained in it. Really useful advises and processes. A must have
Nick Milo
@didier_varlot1 Likewise, thank you for taking the time to write this!
