NepTunes is a desktop accessory that allows you to see and control your music (Apple Music, Spotify) with customizable shortcuts, built-in scrobbler for Last.fm, and beautiful widgets.

I wrote the first version of the app in 2014 for OS X Yosemite – it was supposed to be Last.fm scrobbler that looked nice on Retina display and fit Yosemite's design language. And now? People use it for different reasons – some for the global hotkeys that allow to control playback and rate tracks, some for the Last.fm integration (and because it's the most reliable scrobbler on the market) and some for the widget, because they like to have a glanceable artwork on the desktop. I personally use it for all three core functionalities. The app is for free, but some functionalities require in-app purchase. The user has can choose between cheap subscription (currently $2/year with one month of trial) and a one-time purchase (currently $10). The app isn't "done" yet, so it'll be updated with new features for a looong time.

And my favourite review from the Mac App Store, which describes my goals: "This app just works. It’s automatic and unobtrusive, and just delightful to use. Having a better looking and more functional mini player that’s separate from iTunes isn’t a feature that I thought I would value that much, but I find that I’m using it all the time. It hides when iTunes is closed and opens when you open iTunes. I really like how it announces each track as they come on with a gorgeous little blur and bounce animation, it’s completely replaced the iTunes track notifications for me. And perhaps most importantly, you can browse iTunes with the miniplayer still open! Last.fm scrobbling is solid and accurate—currently using Neptunes on my personal and work computer and there are ZERO duplicate scrobbles! This has been a constant frustration of mine with the official scrobbler for a while and it’s just a load off my shoulders to finally have a good scrobbling experience. Overall, very solid and very polished. I’m kicking myself for not trying Neptunes sooner."

I remember I used to use an app called SkipTunes, but it hasn't been updated in ages. NepTunes looks like a solid, modern replacement — including Last.fm scrobbling!

Woah. Looks super cool! The hotkeys definitely seem useful. Do you think you could also give us some feedback on Spade - we also launched today!
