Some alternative names for ProductHunt include: tnuhtcudorp.com, predocthent.com, pradochint.com and if these don't suffice there is always pxovuhxvumn.com... luckily producthunt.com was available
TD
@acondurache The replace function obviously works less well for more complicated words. I mean, how many possibilities is there to turn "producthunt" to a intelligent name by simply replacing the vowels or consonants at a time? Naturally, not all suggestions will make sense. And I didn't intend to make it so at first. Its purpose is to give you ideas. If there's even one word that lights up your thoughts in a way where you can say, "Hey, I can really make something out of this", then I believe it has fulfilled its function quite well, at least as far as I am concerned. I attempted to check availability for producthunt.com, and it came out unavailable. I can't say what happened in your instance, but I will look into any possible bugs with the nameserver/whois check. Thanks for feedback!

@kasperiapell I think its a useful tool, just had some fun with it

Slightly more useful than Hipster Business Name generator.

@rrhoover nice to meet you in Tokyo on Wednesday Ryan what alternatives did you toss around when deciding on Product Hunt?
Darren Bounds
I find Panabee to be very helpful for this. http://panabee.com/domain-name-g...
Adam Herscher
@dbounds NameMesh is pretty good too, decent spread of functional-to-creative options, and gives real-time availability that's generally accurate: http://www.namemesh.com also domainr: https://domainr.com

Nice project. I've always thought about making this whenever I wanna name a project. @kasperiapell, have you considered adding in synonyms to the mix? Sometimes I want a cool word that means something in particular, even in different languages. Would be also cool to check twitter name availability in addition to domain!
TD
@e7mac Thanks so much Mayank! Both are definitely on the next features list. Synonyms are especially interesting, since they bring more depth to the naming and thesaurus has been a loyal companion always upon brainstorming names.
Mayank Sanganeria
@kasperiapell Awesome! Looking forward to using this regularly :)

A little something that might help spark some ideas for you. If you're anything like me, naming products/projects is a hours-long process where you draw together every related word and phrase you can possibly think of that might adequately describe or relate the purpose of your project and then try to see if it is possible to string them together or somehow transform it all to a good name. This hopefully makes it all a tiny bit more straightforward. @rrhoover Except if one is about to start a fashion startup, haha. Then I'd definitely use http://www.hipsterbusiness.name/ I'm definitely a fan!
Anton Gelman
It has a deeper word/idea-choice than many, but I wish it actually looked up the domains like Domainr does.
TD
@antonreport Hey Anton! Do you mean looking up the domain availability? It indeed does that, although currently only for .com, .co and .io TLDs. Clicking a generated name will check its availability. Or did you mean something else?
Ross Currie
@kasperiapell @antonreport I'm guessing he means filtering. I don't want to click through names to find one that has an available domain
TD
@antonreport @rossdcurrie Ah, I see. It's definitely a valid point. Currently it's not done, because querying so many domains and their various TLD's would cause problems in load time and be spam to servers receiving the queries, but I'll make sure to find a way to implement it in the future.

Did Naminum come up with the name Naminum?
TD
@tacomanator Haha, it turns out the chicken came before the egg this time. I actually decided to leave the name open until the first version was finished, but while developing it just struck me somewhere out of the blue and stuck since then.

I actually love this. Can't wait to use it.
Jon Yongfook
love this! but the two column layout makes it hard to quickly scan IMO (speaking as a person who is in the market for a new domain name!)
TD
@yongfook I'm so glad! It's indeed true it reduces the scannability a bit and I thought about it, but I ended up going with two columns after all, since the scroll bar was getting quite long already and I felt that the volume provides value of its own in this case.

Reminds me of the Startup episode, How to Name Your Company: http://hearstartup.com/episodes/...
Kartik Mandaville
Interesting - I like the replace. Where do you get the dictionary from?
TD
@kar2905 There's actually no dictionary in use – it's just letter manipulations in case of replace, and including curated phrases/words in case of append/prepend.
Brett Goldstein
Awesome resource. I feel like this is a sign we are nearing "peak startup names". I'd like to see this informed better by linguistics and NLP. I'd want to know synonyms, latin roots, even other languages like esperanto (to take a queue from hearstartup.com).

Google becomes Elgoog.
Steve Raymond
I typed in "attitude" and two of the prepend suggestions were "bigtittude" and "fartitude" *chortle* Cool tool though!

I like this! Am searching for a funky alternative right now will report back with results

love the fact that it allows you to iterate on an already generated word, in several languages by the way!
