It's pretty cool. The only thing I would say is that if you're technically skilled enough to host things yourself, then it's pretty likely you will know how to throw together some basic HTML. That's the strength of about.me, it's totally non-technical.
That said, the additional customisation is welcome, if you created a hosted version of this I reckon it would do reasonably well.
@marccrouch funny thing is that I'm technical enough to "throw together some basic HTML" but I didn't feel like spending time on doing anything more than **really** basic HTML. But I wanted it to look a little better than that. Which led to this project :) Here's the full story https://blog.ailon.org/introduci...
@ailon after reading your justification on that blog post, it makes more sense to me now. Having seen some of the design "skills" my own engineers have (or rather, lack), this can certainly be helpful.
I was looking for a way to create a simple personal HTML landing page that I can host on my own server and couldn't find anything. So I built one.
Now you can create a personal web site for yourself, take the code and host it on GitHub Pages or anywhere you want. All free.
Feedback is very welcome!
Alan - you rock!
Thanks - you could have built this up into a small business for yourself [and maybe you will in the future] but I truly appreciate the fact that you gave it away to the community first...
@exlemor Thank you for the kind words Emmanuel! We'll see where this is going to go. For now I just wanted to solve a personal problem and do a web dev exercise :)
@ailon Simple and elegant, thanks for sharing this stuff with the community. It would be great to have some kind of a feature which would allow the user to change the font-type as well.
@aparkhills yeah, I used custom fonts at first, but later realized that most of them have a really limited unicode range support. That produced crappy results once you get out of the Latin charset. So I reverted to "basic" fonts for now.
@ishu3101 hey, Ishan. Thank you for the tip! Carrd looks great. Too bad I didn't find it in my research. That said, it's still $99 to get the site you can self-host, which was one of the motivations for me to create MyStaticPage. More on it here https://blog.ailon.org/introduci...
Nice. It's very simple to use and solves a very specific problem. However, can I customize a bit more, like the background image or so? otherwise my "personal" page will look like everyone else's. Thanks Alan!
@ufo_nguyen thank you for the feedback! More templates are coming. That said, my goal was to give people a 1 minute starter kit that they can use as is or customize the HTML to their liking. I specifically wanted to avoid anything that feels like a web site editor. Provided the result is something you download and upload to your server, you can always swap the background image for anything you like and add other touches ;)
Appreciate that it is for anyone who does not want to code; However I am not so sure about the usability of the templates with most of the content hidden, requiring you to flip the "card" over.
When I set up my personal landing page I looked for something similar and in the end made my own. Nothing came close to the simplicity that I was looking for to make http://www.nickclapp.co.uk
@_nickclapp Thanks, Nick! Yes, flipping the card is not the most usability-friendly solution, but it's just one of the options and primarily aimed at those who don't want to put a lot of text that would go on the back side. In such cases there won't be a flip button and just the front "business card" side. Others can use other templates with all of the content always visible.
As several people here (and other places) requested, I've added a way to host your creations right there on My Static Page https://blog.ailon.org/my-static...
