Hi Product Hunters! 👋 Today is a special day for me: I've been actively using PH for years, but this is the first time I'm posting as a Maker - yay! :) ✨ I quit my job in October last year to learn how to code and build something of my own and monote is the result of these last few months! 😔 THE PROBLEM ____ I often stumble upon interesting products on the web, but then can't find them again later. I used to be a big fan of Svpply back in the day, but never found a good alternative when it was shut down (RIP). 😌 THE SOLUTION ____ So I decided to built my own tool: monote is a bookmarking app for products. It's a little a Chrome Extension that lives in your browser and whenever you see something interesting you can quickly add it to your Wants. (If you don't use Chrome you can also add things directly on the site). 📦 ORGANIZE PRODUCTS IN COLLECTIONS ____ Instead of just having one big wishlist, you can organize your products in different collections. I have collections for Books I Want to Read, Furniture I Like (I just moved into a new apartment and don't want to buy the first best thing I see) and keep track of all my belongings (I try to live a minimalistic life style). You can also build collections based on articles, videos, books or podcasts: I often find myself listening to podcasts or reading blog articles that mention a lot of products and wish there was a quick way to find and save them. Here are a few examples: * Marc Andreesen Reading List (https://www.monote.io/collection...) * Blue Bottle Brewing Tools (https://www.monote.io/collection...) * Tim Ferriss' best purchases under $100 (https://www.monote.io/collection...) 🗒FOR LIST JUNKIES ____ All collections are available as lists and let you sort the containing items by name, comment, category or price. Take this collection of all products listed in Tools of Titans for example: You order it alphabetically by product name, by the person who recommended it and by product category. I hope you'll find monote as useful as I do and come up with other clever ideas how to use it :) Happy to answer any questions you might have! PS: I'm a terrible programmer and this is literally the first time I built a product, so if you encounter any bugs (which I'm sure you will) - please let me know! ;)

Forgot to add: Big thanks to the entire 🚧 WIP Community for all the feedback and encouragement! :)

@lehrjulian I like the simple design, upvoted! Can you tell more about the chrome extension and how you build it (tutorials, sites, links…)? Thank you!
levelsio
Design on this is absolutely refreshing. Love the whole style

@levelsio thanks pieter! :)

@levelsio +1. The monochromatic design is unique. 👏🏼 The concept also reminds me a bit of Kit.

@levelsio @rrhoover Thanks Ryan :) Kit is awesome, but it always felt more like monetization platform for influencers rather than the bookmarking tool I wanted to use. Definitely a big source of inspiration though (keep up the great work @camillionz & @naveen 👋)

I'm loving the design. It's an interesting journey of yours from not knowing how to code and now building products like this. Great stuff, Julian.

@rafyasarmatta thanks mohammed! that's really encouraging feedback! :)
Mo
@rafyasarmatta @lehrjulian Wow you learnt to code along the way? Let me guess, were you mainly a designer before? :)

@rafyasarmatta @morajabi Did some coding courses before this and designed websites as a kid, but never built an actual product. My background is more in marketing / biz-dev actually.
Mohammed Rafy
@lehrjulian :) Keep doing what you do best.
Mohammed Rafy
@morajabi @lehrjulian Transformation from Biz-dev/marketing to a maker. Wow! I will ping you on WIP. Need some help.

This looks amazing. However, I noticed there's no search function. I can't search for that Tim Ferriss' collection!

@arecenello Thanks! Search function is high up on my to-do list! Here's the collection: https://www.monote.io/collection...

@lehrjulian Great! Also, I'd love to ADD collections to my own collections. This is for easy reference.

@arecenello YES! Also on my list of feature request! Been thinking about a Fork function for collections like on Github .. what do you think?
Mo
I love the design! 😍 And keen to see where do you grow the product. One suggestion for the design: I only can see 2 of those products in the front-page, I found them a bit big, You may try something smaller to see how it looks?

@morajabi thanks mohammad! :) interesting feedback: so you mean show 3 or more columns of cards rather than just 2?
Mo
@lehrjulian Maybe but I just thought it is a lot of scroll to see more products :)

@morajabi thanks! i'll add this to the feature request list!

I have been using it for few weeks and love the idea and the execution. Can't wait for the community to grow to find out more cool things!

@ciaoben thanks :) Until then you can check out these collections I really like: - Book recommendations from Peter Thiel - A list of cool things that come in black - Nice keyboards

Looks great! just an FYI that when trying to use the chrome store foxifier to load your extension in FF it complains about an error at monote.lib.js line 10 column 90 during validation, may want to check it out.

Another question Julian! Logo looks really cool, but I'm not sure it reflects what the app is, do you mind sharing what's behind the logo? 🙂 Thanks!

@morajabi Great question! I wanted to give the whole site a Japanese feel / aesthetic. I also wanted something that's unique and recognisable.
Mo
@lehrjulian Ah, cool! But the only issue is there are people using avatars like this, when I see it, I think it it your avatar/profile pic, rather than a product logo, does that make sense to you?

I was one of the lucky ones to be allowed to use Monote during its Beta. What can I say besides that I truly love it!

I have been an avid Svpply user a couple of years back before it was shut down and was waiting for something to replace it - and here it finally is! :D

Pros:

Design obviously, Easiness to use, Practicality

Cons:

Why did it take so long for something to be created to replace the original Svpply!

Markus Reuter ☕️

Soooo useful.

Pros:

It works, it looks nice, I like the logo, Julian is cool

Cons:

I've been waiting for this for years.

Can you not drop all the URL params? e.g. http://www.clubmonaco.com/produc... doesn't work. Also, it's not intuitive to know how to delete things.

@moyicat Thanks! Super useful feedback!! This is not something I had thought of when removing parameters .. will try to find a workaround for this! Deleting things: If you remove an item from your Wants and Collections it won't show up on your profile anywhere. Problem with deleting is that other people might have saved the item already. What do you think would be the best way to handle this? Allow delete as long as no one else has saved it?
Samantha Zhang
@lehrjulian Some thoughts on deleting things: - Deleting an item from a collection: Ideally, within a collection, I can go into an edit view where I can batch remove items from the collection and move things around. Currently "Edit" brings me to a page about the metadata of the collection, which also makes sense, but less-used imo. Right now the only way to remove an item from a collection is going into that item, and click "Added" again - that's a pattern only tech ppl would understand. - Deleting a collection: I looked around and still couldn't figure it out... - Deleting an item from the platform: this is a lesser concern of the user imo. But without the searching functionality, you will have a lot of duplicates within the platform? ^ Also, strong request to add search. Now if I happened to remove a product out of all of my collections, I couldn't find it anymore.

OMG I LOVE YOU. No, seriously. I was using a Wish list website but it was horrible. <3

Liked the look and your focus, really love the minimalist design. Regarding bugs: when using the Chrome Extension to save products, I noticed that the main image is not suggested, instead some broken/tiny thumbnails e.g. on https://hiutdenim.co.uk/products... maybe try to detect only the largest JPGs on the page?
Julian Lehr

@matas Thanks Matas! Yes, the image scraper needs a lot of improvement! Working on it!
Akash Mukherjee
The design is very pleasing to the eye. Can you please explain why would one use this product over Pinterest?
Julian Lehr
Top Product
Maker
@akashdmukherjee17 Great question! I use Pinterest a lot - but only for things that are visually appealing! I'd never use it to save books, movies, etc. Since monote is only about products, you can also sort things by category, price etc.
Deanna Spagnuolo
I think this is a great idea but then I saw the permissions the chrome extension was asking for and decided against downloading it. "Read and change all the data on the websites you visit." Seems a little extreme that its asking for this much data just so I can save some products. I can easily do that in a notebook app instead.
Billy Milon Esparza

Absolutely great work Julian!

I combine monote with pocket to have all my bookmarks perfectly organized.

You still have some room for improvement, I may suggest:

1) Possibility to delete collections

2) Possibility to drag & drop collections and arrange them on a personalized order.

3) When adding a product, if you don't choose a collection it goes directly to the limbo. It would be awesome to have an "all items" collection by default where you catch it all.

Thanks man and great work!

Billy 😉🇲🇽

PS. Business model wise, you could be using affiliate links on the newsfeed or sell top positions directly to e-commerce stores. Avoid dropshippers.

Alright cheers 🍺

Pros:

Minimalist design is just awesome and nice logo ;)

Cons:

Limited features and add-on has troubles to upload products sometimes (need to do direct link from monote.io)
