Thanks a lot for hunting us @williamchanner! Hi Product Hunt, I’m Jason. This all started when I built a simple app to help my mom clean up her computer - she had over 350 files on her Desktop! At Meta Search we believe that you should be able to find your files as easily as you can find stuff on the Internet. We’ll be here all day to answer your questions - we’re looking forward to hearing from you! 😃

@jasonrastrick @williamchanner This looks very promising. How much will it cost?
Jason Briggs
@danflopes @williamchanner We're still thinking a lot about this and would love feedback! When we leave beta, we'll be charging $10 a month for the Pro tier that allows unlimited cloud integrations and devices. We plan to support a lot more cloud accounts in the future. ☁️☁️☁️ There's more info here: www.meta.sc/pricing/ Any ideas?
macbikegeek
@jasonrastrick @danflopes @williamchanner $10 for pro seems reasonable. What devices are you thinking of?
Jason Briggs
@macbikegeek @danflopes @williamchanner We're working on a Windows application right now, and we'll be supporting iOS and Android as well 😃
macbikegeek
@jasonrastrick @danflopes @williamchanner My wife is eagerly awaiting the Windows version!

I have been using the Beta for quite some time. It is really useful. 👍
Jason Briggs
@kkkosariya Awesome, that's so great to hear!
Emily Pavlini
@kkkosariya Thanks for helping us with beta testing! 🎉

@jasonrastrick @emilypavlini @ataylor0123 How do you folks organize your files (or you don't have to because of Meta)?
Aaron Taylor
@tomfme @jasonrastrick @emilypavlini I used to meticulously file things away in crazily complex folder structures trying to keep things organized. Since we built out Meta, I think I can count the number of folders I've created on one hand! As of now I basically have a few folders I'll throw things in to keep my top level clean, and whenever I need to access something I just go through Meta. All my old stuff still exists in those folder heirarchies (no need to rearrange it) and is just as accessible as the new.
Jason Briggs
@tomfme @emilypavlini @ataylor0123 I don’t organize at all, I rely entirely on Meta now 😃
Emily Pavlini
@tomfme @jasonrastrick @ataylor0123 I'm very organized - maybe too organized (folders in folders in folders!) 😂 Meta saves me a TON of time because I just do a quick search instead of clicking into 100 different folders to get to what I'm looking for! I also now have files scattered across many different cloud services, so sometimes I can't remember where to look 😬
Ben Tossell
so tell us the story here? What made you decide to build this? :)
Jason Briggs
@bentossell At the risk of plagiarizing our About page. My mom is a Kindergarten teacher. One summer she was about to go back to school and was trying to get organized, but she had 356 files on her desktop. You know when files start stacking in the top right corner of the screen? I built a simple Desktop organization program called Tidy Pro 😂 which kind of worked, but within a week her Desktop was trashed again.  Then my mom's school introduced Google Apps and her colleagues were sharing things with her on Dropbox, which just added to the chaos. Everyone can find what they want on Google among billions of web pages, why isn’t it the same for your files? That’s why we’re building Meta 😃

After choosing the services I want Meta to index, I installed the app. It asked me to select the directories I want indexed, so I chose Dropbox, Drive, etc. But does this mean it's only indexing what's in my Dropbox folder on my computer? Or is this indexing my entire Dropbox account? Dropbox's search *sucks* plain and simple. I was hoping Meta would fix Dropbox's lacking search capabilities.
Jason Briggs
@lee_peterson Hmm, interesting, we didn't consider that user flow! If you connect your Dropbox and Drive cloud accounts to Meta that will be the source of truth, and you can still open those files locally if you have the Mac client. I would suggest removing Dropbox and Drive local syncing and just connect directly to the cloud apps themselves. 😃 Thanks so much for bringing this to our attention, we'll definitely update the Mac App to be more explicit about that! Let me know if you run into any issues with that, I'm happy to go into more detail!
Lee Peterson
@jasonrastrick Awesome. I hadn't actually considered it a UX issue now that I think about it. There didn't seem to be anything "wrong" with it, you know? I guess I just didn't see something like "We're indexing your entire Dropbox/Drive/Slack/etc. accounts, and you can add local macOS directories to index as well." If I saw that, then I'd just skip indexing local files since Alfred/Spotlight does that very well for me.
Jason Briggs
@lee_peterson Yeah that makes complete sense! Thanks!
Aaron Taylor
Hey everyone! I'm Aaron, CTO at Meta. We're super excited to be on Product Hunt today! I'm more than happy to answer any questions you may have about the product and our journey building it. We've got a lot of exciting stuff going on 😊 FYI, we've hit some Google Cloud Platform quotas due to a usage spike today 🎉 🎉 🎉 We're working on getting them resolved ASAP, but if it takes a bit longer than usual to get your account set up that's likely why!
Aaron Taylor
Wow, thanks Product Hunters for all the traffic! We've brought on more than 10 times as many people today as we have in a single day so far, indexed millions of files, and processed tens of millions of requests. That's awesome!!! We did have a few hiccups along the way in getting everyone's Meta accounts ready, primarily in the form of slow downs, so some of you may just now be getting access to the search. There were a few different issues at play, but after some awesome work put in by our team and the wonderful folks at our technology partners, we've been able to mitigate most everything causing slowdowns, and the system is just about caught up to where it should be! If you haven't been unlocked just yet, you should be soon!

I'm loving Meta. I've been on the beta for a bit and it's saving me anywhere from a few minutes to half an hour when I have to go searching for things. I have stuff across multiple cloud services and a lot of disk space on my Mac and things just show up instantly when I look for them in Meta. And Emily and Jason and Aaron are extremely responsive to questions and feedback. Not to mention really nice folks.
Emily Pavlini
@macbikegeek Thanks for all the positive feedback - I'm blushing! 😊
Emily Pavlini
Thanks for hunting us, Will! Hi Product Hunters! Very excited to be here 😍 Adding to what Jason said, we created Meta because the average employee wastes 4 hours each week searching for or recreating lost work 😱 I’m a huge fan of productivity, so that is not cool! We’ll be here all day answering questions and would love to hear your feedback, so keep it coming! I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts on what we’ve built! 😃
Jason Briggs
Also, thanks so much Cole @twnsndco for the amazing lander! ⚡️

I'm already a beta tester and I use Meta whenever I need to find something! Works really well and is super fast :)
Emily Pavlini
@briggsstefan Woohoo! Glad to hear you like Meta! 🎉
Leandro Ardissone
@jasonrastrick are you planning to add OCR recognition on images? At least the ones on Dropbox/GDrive. It would be really useful.
Jason Briggs
@leech Our first OCR project is scanned PDFs, but image OCR is something we're looking into! What image types are you interested in particularly? Can you describe the use case? We'd love to help!
Leandro Ardissone
@jasonrastrick yes, mostly scanned document (or today we use mobile photos a lot to capture text). Also would be interesting some kind of agent for quick search without opening the whole app. Clean and minimal like Spotlight for quick searches. And the entire app for more powerful search.
Jason Briggs
@leech Definitely! We wanted to start with the full app to demonstrate the full search capabilities but we're planning a simple, quick launch function that makes full use of keyboard shortcuts. Stay tuned!
Ben
Happy beta user. Highly recommend it for anyone who works with multiple teams or companies.
Emily Pavlini
@heliostatic Thanks, Ben! Glad you've found Meta helpful so far 😃
Morgan Polotan
I now rely on Meta to search Google Drive, because Drive's native search sucks (irony?). Congrats Jason on getting hunted!
Jason Briggs
@morganpolotan Thank you very much! Glad we've replaced Drive search for you. Are there any other integrations you'd like to see us add?
Alex Sherwood
This is a big improvement on Trello's search function (which forces you to search over and over, if you don't select the right result from a seemingly random list of returned matches). With the added benefit that you might see a forgotten relevant file that's stored elsewhere at the same time, in your search results.
Jason Briggs
@aplssf Totally agree! Trello card search is very different from file search though, which has been our biggest focus so far. We would love any suggestions on how to improve/optimize the card search experience 😃
Ouriel Ohayon
Can you open the native apps instead of the web version? (eg Evernote)
Emily Pavlini
Yes! If you right-click the Evernote file you'd like to open and select "Evernote App" from the dropdown, it will open directly in Evernote. (Eventually we will have a setting where you can make this the default behavior!)
TJ Mahony
Happy beta user for 3+ months... use it all the time.
Jason Briggs
@tj_mahony Thanks a lot for testing with us!
Nat Welch
Very cool, looking forward to try this out. I've built some small versions of this app before (built a small app where it just uploaded lists of all of my files on all of my computers), so super excited to see this here. I'd love alfred.app integration since that's how I search for things now!
Emily Pavlini
@icco Very cool! We'd love to hear your thoughts once you get a chance to try it out! 🎉 And a few people have asked for an integration with Alfred - definitely something we're looking into!
Matt Mayberry
Great work guys. Happy to see someone pickup where Greplin left off many years ago. Congrats!
Emily Pavlini
@mattmayberry thanks so much! I'd love to hear what you think of Meta once you have a chance to try it out! What do you miss most about Greplin?
Evan Kimbrell
Any plans to add support for Apple Mail / Spark Mail? I feel like I'm the only person in the world who doesn't use Gmail
Aaron Taylor
@evankimbrell Yeah! We have plans to make the Mac app do lots more stuff in the near future, including syncing with Apple Mail (I use Apple Mail as well). We'll look into Spark! More generically, we're also hoping to roll out support for email as a whole soon, supporting the IMAP, etc.
Emily Pavlini
@evankimbrell don't worry, you're not the only one! Many users have been asking about other mail services too! 😃
Perttu Talasniemi
This seems very useful. :)
Emily Pavlini
@imakesoft we hope so! I'd love to hear what you think of Meta once you've had a chance to use it more!
