Most people in the U.S. probably haven't heard of this app, even though it's been around since 2008. It just released in the U.S. and starting to go hashtag viral. It uses facial recognition and AR to make your selfies beautiful/creepy, similar to Snapchat lenses. For example:
Chris Messina
Damnit @rrhoover! I was JUST hunting this!! :P
Jim Canto
@rrhoover ;-) Ha... beauty cranked all the way to the right. LOL... imma need a longer slider.
Richard Ginsberg
@rrhoover You look very Ryan-driel. Cast for the next LOTR.
Frank Schwarz
@rrhoover This app couldn't make you any more handsome.
Rodrigo Prior
@chrismessina @rrhoover The hunting war!
Jake Crump
Selfie gorgeous level achieved.

@jakecrump can you make this your Slack profile photo? It brings me insane amounts of joy 😂🙌
ddrt
@jakecrump this is the only way it should be done.
Rick Chen
@jakecrump eww. dude, you look beautiful.

For the love of God don't download it. On iOS it looks for jailbreak permissions, and then does malicious things if you have it. But on androif, it sends your imei (unique phone identification) to China

Uhhh yeah guys this app is almost certainly used for Very Bad Things (at least on Android). It's for sure sending IMEI, MAC Address and more to IPs in China. I'd bet the iOS version does what it can as well. http://www.androidpolice.com/201...

Love this - I have officially achieved mermaid status

A billion downloads and just now getting on product hunt? Sounds like there's room for PH to expand into different regions
Jon Tavarez
Is the demo video really making this guys eyes more "western"? Yikes. Also, I don't think anyone in the west wants to look like Anime, but I may be wrong.
Ben Anderson
@jon_tavarez Yeah that's definitely what happened there!

Privacy concerns reiterated as mentioned by others as well: http://bit.ly/2jdX1Tc

so kawaii

Wired just wrote an article about some dubious security red flags with this app.
Dario AppSapp
Security and privacy experts raise questions about viral selfie app Meitu's app permissions like GPS, call and carrier info, more that are unrelated to core use ...
Chuck Kahn
@appsapp I wonder how many apps on my phone are harvesting my IMEI for questionable purposes?
Aykut Karaalioglu
I have checked our numbers they got over 200k downloads last 2 days in USA. Their usual days just 400-500 downloads.
Jack Solomon
@aykut_karaalioglu where have you found the download figures?
Jack Solomon
@aykut_karaalioglu thanks! Cool site by the way - how do you come up with the estimates?
Duane Wilson✌️
not sure what this is supposed to do, maybe I'm old, but doesn't work at all 😍

I really appreciate PH for being such an open door for many companies to get their products easily out to the masses, but I think apps, such as this one, that are basically a little fun on top of massive personal information and security breaches really shouldn't be permitted. I get it, it's fun, but at a massive expense and not worthy of the PH fistbump.

But we wanted flying cars!!!

Oh my! Makes me wanna take care of my skin more to achieve that insanely good retouched selfie in real life

I'm trying to decide if I like this better than BeautyPlus, which is likely Meitu's knockoff cousin... BeautyPlus is an almost identical app, here's my extreme example: http://imgur.com/Zhl2pDx http://imgur.com/tgy2tFs
Maz Ameli
oh good grief

haha cool app but I found it rather complicated to use.. plus I ended up in a windows computer at some point. I played with it for awhile and couldn't figure out how to make the selfies as advertised. Deleted after 5 minutes.
