When I got laid off from my tech job in 2022 without warning, it stressed me out that I could lose a job without time to find a new job. I found out that companies are required to submit layoff notices to the government up to 60 days in advance. So I set out to create a mobile app that collects all of this info and alerts users about upcoming layoffs. Originally this app was created to provide peace-of-mind so I would be aware of upcoming industry changes. Now, Layoff Alerts App helps hundreds of employees and recruiters be more aware of layoff trends.

I love this, this such an amazing idea! Do you plan on making an Android version as well? Also, the button to get to the app store could be improved, because unless you hover the text, you can click the button all you want and it does nothing, that's because you put an anchor element inside a button element, the way to fix this issue is to remove the button element and to make the anchor element look like a button.

@emnificent Thank you! An Android version is planned, and will be released early next year. Also nice catch with the download button, it's fixed now, you're awesome!

Great idea! It'd bring so much peace to employees! You said "companies are required to submit layoff notices to the government up to 60 days in advance." Is this true for all companies/industries? It looks like a lot of layoffs happen overnight.

@tapadipti There are different regulations and laws that vary depending on the state and county. Some states require up to 90 day notice, and some states have laws that don't require the info to be publicly available. There are also cases where the company isn't required to file because of how they layoff their staff. I was laid off in the middle of a workday along with hundreds of others, I found out later that a notice was in fact submitted 2 months prior. This app brings industry transparency to the people.

This is awesome. I searched for something similar a few months back and was surprised at how non-intuitive the WARN notices and systems were lol. Great solution, congrats on your launch!

Love the background story on this Chris! this is a much needed tool. Curious - what is your strategy and focus for monetization?
Chris DeWeese
@huashu Hey, glad you love the story! There is no monetization strategy, the app was designed from the beginning to be free/cheap to operate. Access to industry information like this should be free to the people, not locked behind a paywall.

@chrisdeweese thats so generous Chris! this is much needed, thank you! maybe in the future, you should put a link or something so people can donate, and helping you support the project- it's really awesome!

Your service addresses a critical need for timely and accurate information, which is particularly valuable in today’s fast-paced and often uncertain job market. By providing users with the latest updates, they can stay ahead, whether it's for risk management, career planning, or simply staying informed about the health of industries and companies they are interested in.

This can be really cool but having it be an app is overkill I feel. This isn't something I'm going to check daily/weekly. Is there a world where we can simply enter our email and companies to monitor and get email alerts?
