Currently going through this minefield. Books looks great though hard to justify the $39 price tag for an ebook
Darshan Gajara
@sam__cash Tobias also wrote an article justifying the cost of the book.

@weirdowizard @sam__cash No disrespect intended, but if you really have to justify the price tag, you're doing something wrong.
Tobias van Schneider
@sam__cash Hey Sam! I was briefly mentioning this in my blog post. The cost is currently slightly more than two cocktails in New York ($15 each) which is how I like to compare it. This ebook is definitely for those who're determined to move and I personally would have paid triple that price for something like it. It may be expensive for some, but considering you're moving to the second most expensive city in the US with it, I think this is a fair price tag.

@thepenwoman @weirdowizard @sam__cash I agree, I feel that $39 is a pretty ridiculous price. Without a sample of a few pages or the most viable chapter, I don't see myself buying it unless I feel I absolutely need it.

@3raxton @thepenwoman @weirdowizard @sam__cash Hey Braxton! This is the best answer yet and is very much what I wanted to achieve. Don't buy it if you're not considering moving, but if you do, you will love this because it will make the process a lot easier and headache free.

Hey friends! So excited to share this project with you. It's an e-book I wrote over the course of last year and I finally managed to publish it. It's for people who seriously consider moving to New York, especially those who're moving from outside the United States. The e-book aims to answer all the burning questions about finding a job, calculating costs of living, finding an apartment, getting the right work visa and even down to setting up all the essentials. My motivation for this book was simple: I wanted to write something that I would have LOVED to read myself when I moved to New York around 7 years ago. So you can expect no bullshit, no fluff. This e-book is meant to save you lots of trouble, trouble I, or others already went through. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have. There is also a little FAQ section on the website which may or may not answer a few of those already. Thank you for sharing and spreading the word. !IMPORTANT! Please do not get the e-book if you're not seriously considering moving to NYC. This is a STEP BY STEP guide, it's filled with practical and tactical information ready to guide you through every step along the way in case you consider moving. It's not meant to be a casual browse kinda ebook. It's for those hardcore people who want to move! Questions? Let me know! I also put up a blog post with some more information behind the ebook: http://www.vanschneider.com/how-... Cheers Tobias

@vanschneider this is a brilliant project on several levels. Congrats!
Dainis Kanopa
@vanschneider From what perspective it is created? like for foreigners who planning to move to NYC or locals?
Tobias van Schneider
@clarkvalberg Thank you so much Clark!
Tobias van Schneider
@dainiskanopa Not fully sure I fully understand the question you can say it is definitely more created out of the perspective of a foreigner.

@dainiskanopa @vanschneider Last paragraph of the post leads me to belive it could be for anyone moving to NYC >!IMPORTANT! This is awesome work, @vanschneider! I loved seeing the evolution of this idea through your newsletter. If I ever move to NYC, this is the first thing I'd read, even though I've visited and explored the city before. Would you consider making a generalized excerpt about moving to ANY city? I feel like that could be a useful starting point to consider which questions to ask as you're moving somewhere else. Always nice to see some things from a designer's perspective, as we sweat the details and experiential things. Looking forward to seeing this as part of your May 1st Reboot project too!
Tobias van Schneider
@kunalslab Hey Kunal! Thank you so much! Yes, the pre-order process was a really nice experience and I hope people who pre-ordered felt that too. Lots of questions I got via that process shaped the book as well. Honestly, I love your idea, I'm not sure if I'm equipped enough to make one for every city but I will see how well this could apply to other cities as well. One of the main things in this ebooks is definitely also the move to the US, from the perspective of a foreigner.

Ah-ma-zing. Always have been fascinated by New York and have a bunch of friends who plan on moving there soon without any idea on to how to pull it off. Will be sending them this link! Beautiful lander too. Nice work mate.

Really cool!

@sarah_quesada Thank you Sara! <3

this in print would be an amazing gift to all my Bay Area friends trying to leave the tech scene here for the NYC one :p Excited to check it out!
Tobias van Schneider
@ana_m_medina They Ana! I would assume they would have no problem "downgrading" to New York, as from what I know, the Bay Area seems even more expensive (:

@vanschneider You have the sickest designs. Whether it's your blog, semplice, or a simple e-book. Can you talk about the technical aspect (step-by-step) to creating your e-book? 10X Dope🚬🚬🚬🚬🚬🚬🚬
Tayler O'Dea
I have been waiting for his book.

This is awesome, but $39 is pretty steep, especially if you're saving money to move to the City. Honestly, as a seasoned New Yorker, I could write an e-book on this and make it $5, or make it free and use it as lead generation. With an average physical book price (hardback) of $20-30, this is too expensive. Would also recommend self-releasing on Amazon + adding a Kindle version. That with lowering the price, I would expect to see better reception. Otherwise, awesome design.
Tobias van Schneider
@elisegraham Appreciate the feedback Elise. I think I need to make it more clear that this book is written from the perspective of an "immigrant". There are lot more things to it than just moving to NYC from within the same country. I will make sure to make this more clear.

@vanschneider @elisegraham Hey Tobias I am going to send you another message but just had to add that I think your price is fair. I moved to Los Angeles 7 years ago and I know the pain of wanting a similar product for LA. The ability to help find a cheap and safe apt in itself is worth $39. I am almost finished with all of the content and I would like to hire you to help design it (Design is not my strength) Sending you a separate email now. Nice work!
Guillaume Flandre
As someone who also had to go through this a few years ago, it would have been great to have this kind of handy guide back then. I think it's great that it focuses on the essentials and supposedly doesn't sugarcoat the boring paperwork parts, because sometimes there's just no way around it and you just gotta fill dem forms :D
Tobias van Schneider
@gflandre Hey Guillaume! Absolutely yes, I tried keeping it bullshit free and really made it a step by step book. There is no fluff, little personal stories, but only all the details you HAVE to know. Especially things like visa overview I would have loved back then.
Filippo Mursia
@vanschneider you worked for amazing projects and brands, did this happen before or after moving to NYC? Having such portfolio is a big step in getting a VISA. I'm currently looking to move to NYC (lawyers, etc) and I'd be interested in the book, but I want to understand how actually your starting point can be compared to mine. See what I mean?
Tobias van Schneider
@mrdobelina Hey Filippo - Absolutely and that is a great question. Honestly, this depends on what visa you're looking to apply for, and which you may qualify. I've given a very good overview in my ebook about the most common visas, but of course an immigration lawyer will be a must here. (which I also include in the ebook) - But to answer your specific question: I'd say it was around 50/50, most brands I worked for prior to moving to New York. But honestly, I wouldn't say this is absolutely needed.
Luca Schumann
Basically a perfect guide! Also respect to you for strongly advising against buying it if you're not completely sure you want to move to New York City.
Steph Liverani
I bought this guide and love it! Great job Tobias <3

You're brilliant man! That kind of treasure is really helpful for people who wants to move to New York! Thanks for all the work!

I don't think the point of good return policies is to increase service time. It's very rare that these are used but it helps significantly to increase trust in a product and the lack of one here is the single biggest reason that I can't consider buying.
