GlobeFlix - Find your next streaming choice across countries easily

GlobeFlix addresses the problem of different catalogues across distinct countries on streaming platforms by allowing users to find the intersection of movies / TV series between two countries, while offering search tools to find something users want to watch.

Hey hunters, I’m excited for my first launch on Product Hunt! Before talking about the app itself, I wanted to share the story behind how it was conceived and developed: GlobeFlix was born out of a struggle I used to have with my partner when we were in a long-distance relationship. She was in Egypt, while I was in the UK in 2020 and 2021. And while we both love watching movies and TV series together in person, we also enjoy watching together remotely (especially during covid times). However, we quickly found that we struggled to find movies or TV series in common to watch when discussing what we wanted to watch next. To our surprise, we found out that Netflix had a different catalogue of available titles between Egypt and the UK, and between pretty much any country due to streaming rights! This meant that when we were on a video call deciding what to watch next, one of us would find something we both wanted, only for the other to not have access to it. This happened often, and we felt like we had to “compromise” for something in common between both the UK and Egypt because we could see all the choices we were missing out on. We thought we couldn’t be the only ones who ran into this issue. So before creating an app dedicated to solving this problem we experienced, we wanted validation from potential users that this was a problem worth addressing. We ran a user survey with 106 relevant participants on Prolific, confirming that this was a problem worth solving, and giving us a clearer idea of the core functionality we needed to implement. This is where GlobeFlix comes in. In a nutshell: it’s a web app that finds the intersection of titles between two different countries. And to hone onto a title you want to watch, it allows you to filter by streaming platform (currently either Netflix or Disney Plus), by Movie or TV Series, by genre, and to sort by release date or rating. All of this condensed in a small web app to quickly find what you want to watch! Currently, the search functionality supports 45 different countries and 2 streaming services as it uses an API that is affordable. If GlobeFlix has enough users, we will make the jump to a better (and more expensive) API provider that will allow us to cover every country and most streaming services. Planned future updates include new search pages for VPN-users, such as single country search (to see all titles available in a single country) and title search (to see in which country titles are available), as well as quality of life features such as watchlisting searched titles. If you’re still reading this far, thanks for taking the time. I would love to gather your feedback on this app in the comments below, and look forward to hearing what you think about GlobeFlix. Thanks, Adam

@new_user___0682025cd805ac1d71fc6ad That's in the works, and we also have plenty of new features in the pipeline, including:

  • Watchlist system to save movies and tv shows that you found

  • Free tools:

    • Title search (and you see which countries it's available in)

    • Single-country search (to see all titles available in the catalogue of a single country)

  • More login options (e.g., Facebook)

Keep an eye out for updates!

Diana

Very cool idea!
