Last week @gmc (co-founder of Uber) DM'd me on Twitter about his latest project, Every.org. I love that he and the team are applying their experience building consumer products to charitable giving. This has the potential to convert non-givers into givers and make giving more rewarding. I just donated to MAPS and ARC. You can see my profile at https://www.every.org/@rrhoover. I have so many ideas but curious what's on the roadmap. 🤔
Mark Ulrich
Hey everyone, co-founder here https://www.every.org/@mark. Thanks so much for hunting us and supporting MAPS and ARC @rrhoover, I loved reading why you chose them! Part of the inspiration for Every.org was that we wanted to learn more about giving and discover nonprofits from our friends and community, it's always a joy for me to learn why people give. We envision every nonprofit doing good work getting the reliable, recurring support needed to focus on their mission. To create those enduring connections between givers and nonprofits, we have some exciting features on our roadmap to help organizations and experts share their stories and impact data. If you know a nonprofit doing great work that might be interested, please support them on Every.org today, share why you give, and check out https://www.every.org/nonprofits if you'd like to improve their profile or guide our roadmap. We're just getting started. Not everyone can afford to donate often, especially in the middle of a crisis when it's needed most. Building better ways for givers to inspire each other and support their favorite causes through advocacy and volunteering (preferably remote, shelter-in-place friendly!) is on our minds. We’d love to hear from Hunters - what do you think of Every.org today and what would you like to see coming next?
Tina Roh
@jason_joseph1 That's super cool! We would love to chat more about it, please hit us up at team@every.org. We do want to add more badges of endorsement in the future on the nonprofit profiles, such as "GiveWell" or "Six Beats of Separation"-endorsed, which might help with visibility.

Hi, I'm also a cofounder of Every.org. You can find my profile at https://every.org/@omar 🙏 I'm convinced that giving to and supporting each other makes communities stronger. But until we started building Every.org I had never internalized how solitary (and roundabout) the act of giving is in modern society. I'm extremely grateful and privileged to have the opportunity to devote my time and energy for social good—and I hope that our product can serve as a catalyst, not just to connect do-gooders with nonprofits working on society's most underserved, but also to build stronger communities in the midst of division, isolation, and crisis. We're working hard to make this a site for people like you, so please sign up, let us know what you think and join us in making what we believe to be the simplest way to give; to become the most rewarding.

This is great! Particularly that it's a nonprofit itself. So many entities that help nonprofits have the .org domain so people think they're a nonprofit despite being a for-profit. This is a case where it's actually a 501c3, so you know they're 100% building it for the mission. Some of the for-profits that build tools, etc... for nonprofits definitely could be building for the right reasons, but there's always the chance the primary reason is $$. Though I do think you guys could do a better job of conveying you're a 501c3. I think the only place it says so is the FAQ?
Mark Ulrich
@austinhallock great suggestion! Maybe it should go in the footer? We also mention in at https://www.every.org/about, but definitely not as prominent as it should be. We're proud to be a nonprofit, just like the organizations we support. Like you said, it ensures that in the long-term our goals will stay fully aligned with the givers and nonprofits we serve and keeps us 100% focused on the mission :)
Austin Hallock
@mark_ulrich ah, I see it now. Guess I skipped over the part between all the photos. It's too bad .orgs aren't restricted to nonprofits, or else this wouldn't be necessary. The `.ngo` tld that does require validation is pretty bad
Tina Roh
@austinhallock Thanks Austin, this just reminded us we had to register for that. every.ngo redirects to every.org now!

What I am missing here is the effectiveness part of giving. The basic idea is great, yes, but what does it help if in the end people waste money by giving to charities that are barely effective or are even harmful because of the lack of proper data? Some ideas how to tackle this: • add ratings of independent charity evaluators • add something like "verification badges" but for ratings as top charities by evaluators like givewell • reward/motivate giving to more effective charities I think this is really important because we wouldn't just make people give their money, but actually give it in an effective way to an effective cause. People will be educated on how to give "better". And charities in turn would be motivated to track & evaluate their own effectiveness and optimize towards more effectiveness. Could be a win-win :)
Tina Roh
@sinansaglam Thank you for commenting about this; it's something we think about a lot. We definitely want to incorporate expert feedback and ratings from independent charity evaluators in the future. One thing we're thinking through is how to do it in a way that doesn't disproportionately disadvantage smaller, local nonprofits that may also be doing great work in their communities. That's why we think supporter voices are essential and bring something new to the ecosystem. As you mentioned, there are nonprofit evaluation organizations that try to measure nonprofit efficacy. But there are gaps with each approach: - GiveWell deeply researches into select nonprofits and makes recommendations. However, not all nonprofit effectiveness is easily quantifiable and relies on subjective measures, so you will find GiveWell recommendations are usually health-related (e.g. malaria) and fewer in human services, and they can't easily scale their approach to the smaller nonprofits. - CharityNavigator focuses on financials, as it is the easiest piece of data available, but that has caused some donors to focus too much on overhead ratio as the single metric, which led them to create a campaign to dispel the "overhead myth": http://overheadmyth.com That being said, we are in conversations with some of these organizations, researchers, and nonprofit experts to figure out the best way to incorporate this information on the site that is easy for people to digest. We do want people to give more thoughtfully, and we think more dialogue about the nonprofit space could be a great start for that. If I can easily see that my friend or someone I trust supports a specific nonprofit and why, that gives me a solid footing to learn more about them. That's also why we encourage recurring donations; to get people to think more about their values and give more regularly. We also hope to create more tools for nonprofits, but in our interviews we heard that many of them are already having trouble staying on top of all the various existing tools, so we wanted to create something that can work well and scale independently first. Their supporters become their fundraisers in a sense, and they can focus more of their time on their core mission.

@tina_roh Thank you for the detailed reply! Glad to see that you are working on this! :) And don't get me wrong - I like the idea and hope that it will help people with giving and charities with their reach! Just created an account :)

Hello! I am an Advisor to Every.org and am very excited about the platform. I sit on the board of the Saint Francis Foundation (https://www.every.org/saintfranc...) in San Francisco and have been involved in the startup/venture ecosystem for many years. This product has done an amazing job of making it easy for users to discover non-profits (through both friends and categories) and to donate to non-profits (either one-time or recurring). From a non-profit perspective, having many recurring donations and enabling new audiences to discover the non-profit through categories or viral effects is amazing and solves some real challenges for non-profits. I am excited for the continued growth of Every.org and the impact this platform will have on the world! :) PS: My non-profit donations can be discovered here: https://www.every.org/@arjun

@arjun @arjundarora Thank you for your support as always!

This is fantastic, nice work y'all. I'd love to be able to save some foundations to a favorites list.
Tina Roh
@drew Thanks Drew! I added a vote on your behalf to our feature tracking board: https://feedback.every.org/giver... Seems like several people want this feature! If you have any other ideas, please add them here: https://feedback.every.org/

@tina_roh nice. thank you!

The easiest way to donate to a whole bunch of charities that you’ve always wanted to support. Once you enter your credit card, every.org let’s you donate to multiple charities super easily. It’s so easy that I donated to more charities than ever before and it felt great.
Tina Roh
@eliza_nguyen1 Thank you, Eliza!

I am loving every.org, what a needed tool for us to all connect and see where we can support different orgs together. It is a positive way to connect and share interests within our communities, the simplicity of every.org makes it easy to use and friendly for anyone that is unfamiliar with any specific nonprofits. great job every.org team!
Mark Ulrich
@cherin_choi great to hear first-hand what parts of Every.org matter to you, especially the ease of use and "share interests within our communities" part - I think there is even more we can do there to help grow communal wisdom and improve each others giving habits!
Eliana Sur
Every.org’s user experience is fluid and seamless. I appreciate the careful attention to design and ease of use. They’ve made discovering and supporting non-profits simple, even delightful. The social elements are smart, as is the convenience of having all contributions centralized for tax purposes. Thank you for creating a donation platform that is accessible and unintimidating, low pressure, and exciting to use.
Mark Ulrich
Thank you Eliana! Easy and delightful is exactly what we're going for - everyone can be a philanthropist :)
Jason Joseph
As a founder of a nonprofit ( Six Beats Of Separation® ) that supports other nonprofits, how could I not be behind this.
Tina Roh
@jason_joseph1 Thanks for the support, and excited to connect!

Great Idea - I sent a similar idea to Facebook along time ago that they needed to create a field where users could identify their favorite charities and the longer users used Facebook, Facebook would donate a small share of their advertising revenue to the users favorite charities = WIN/WIN The overall impact could be HUGE.
Tina Roh
@smwhrthersacure Yes! We found that charitable work is rarely prioritized in social media companies like Facebook, though we do think Facebook Fundraisers has increased giving overall. Makes sense— their incentives are aligned to profits so they don't dedicate resources to building features for nonprofits. By being a 501(c)(3) nonprofit ourselves, we make sure we're aligned to our mission to connect givers and nonprofits!
Sawyer Curtiss
Congrats on the Product Hunt launch! The new feed page looks great!
Tina Roh
@sawyercurtiss Thanks Sawyer! Glad to see you here!
Jack Smith
this looks great. I'd like it if I could also "like" or "follow" a charity, instead of just donate. In case I want to donate to that charity in the future. at the moment I couldn't see any option for that on the charity profile pages
Rahul Gupta-Iwasaki
@_jacksmith, thanks for the support and feedback! That's one of our most requested features right now and is coming up quickly on our product roadmap :)
Sophia Li
A few clicks and done! Love the simplicity and reliability of this tool. I’ve made donations already! It’s time to give back.
Mark Ulrich
@sophia_li thanks for joining the mission!!

@rrhoover @mark_ulrich tremendous work. Giving back and giving to those who can make a difference must be promoted more, and adding a name like yours into the arena helps us others that work with giving, but are missing the power to be heard. We have a little startup in Copenhagen called DrugStars and we would love to talk about teaming up, maybe offering our app as way for people to donate FOR FREE. You see we gather medical data and in return for your data we let our users donate to a charity/patient organisation inside the app (we have 320 currently). Enough about us, and sorry for rambling, but giving is so important ... I hope you will give us a thought and maybe an email pc@drugstars.com thanks and may the force be with you!
Rahul Gupta-Iwasaki
@paul_clements1 is that kind of analogous to how Brave browser compensates its users for viewing ads? Sounds intriguing - sending you an email!
Paul Clements
@rahulgi It would be awesome to work together to help as many people as possible. Iv'e replied to your mail. Lets talk :-)
