Epilepsy Blocker - Block flashing GIFs that may cause an epileptic seizure

Epilepsy Blocker is a chrome extensions that automatically blocks dangerous, flashing GIFs that may trigger an epileptic seizure to people with photosensitive epilepsy. Think of it as an AdBlocker, but for dangerous animated content.

Hi Product Hunt, it's good to be back. I haven't launched a product in a while, so I am actually quite nervous! For the first time ever, I am launching a product I truly love. I feel, if everything goes well, I could easily devote the next years of my life to this. I present to you, Epilepsy Blocker! It is a chrome extension that automatically blocks flashing, animated GIFs that may cause an seizure to people with photosensitive epilepsy I started reading online that people where getting seizures from animated flashing content. For example, there is a case of award-winning journalist Kurt Eichenwald, who was 'attacked' with an animated GIF on Twitter that triggered an epileptic seizure There is also another, more extreme case where hundreds of kids where sent to the hospital simultaniously. It was from a Pokemon episode. Yes.. a Pokemon episode, google it! I decided to build something that could prevent these cases from happening again, so I created Epilepsy Blocker I started building this in the "24 hour challenge", but couldn't make it work the way I wanted. Trust me, it's not as easy as it may seem I honestly felt like a scientist while building this, since I had to read numerous scientific papers and come up with a specialized algorithm myself If anyone is interested in the whole tech and story behind it, you can read about it on my Twitter ( www.twitter.com/alexsideris_ ) Much love, Alex ❤️

@alexandersideris Thanks, Alex for building this. It's such a simple thing yet so helpful. I do not suffer from epilepsy, but I'm very disturbed by flashing lights (they provoke vertigo that can last for hours)

Very thoughtful idea, @alexandersideris. This would be a nice built-in feature for browsers like Chrome and Firefox.

@alexandersideris @rrhoover agreed. Google should acquire this now for Chrome 😁

@rrhoover @daviswbaer haha, if only it was that easy! 😁

Seizures are no joke, so happy to see someone provide a solution to a problem we don't have any control over.

Pros:

Perfect in every way!

Cons:

None

Don't have epilepsy but love this concept!

A great idea. Best of luck with the marketing now that you've built it!

This sounds really cool!
