Debrief - Your private reflection space at work, right in Slack

Work rhythm in tech companies is intense. If you get caught up in it, stress accumulates and affects your wellbeing and performance. Quick debriefs in Slack work wonders, serving both as an analytical tool to your work life and a safe place to vent and relax 🧘

Greetings, product hunt! It's Roman from Debrief.‹‹ Many thanks to Tristan @pollock for hunting us:) Today we are stoked to share a tool that we started building to take care of our own remote team's well-being.‹‹It is called Debrief, a Slack app for safely sharing your struggles, making sense of what’s going on at work and unwind. Here is a problem we're aiming to solve. Today's fast-paced work culture generates a lot of stressful moments. Many people aren’t trained to deal with them in a self-caring manner, they tend to accumulate stress and burn out.‹‹It might not be obvious who is struggling with what at the moment. But you can be sure that almost everyone is struggling with something. Sure, many of us have talk therapy, meditation apps, memes, sports and so on to relax. But in the heat of the work moment those tools are out of reach, and that’s where we may start stressing out loud in group chats, sending emotional emails, or fingerprinting at standup meetings. There’s got to be a better way to deal with work stress, to filter emotions from facts, to address both in time, and to get the assistance with it if needed. Debrief is just the place for that. A private space in your team Slack for everyone to reflect on their work experience and timely share the pain points they have — so that you could address them together. Debrief helps you create a routine and a workflow over your personal work stressors, like meetings, planning, relationship with colleagues, deadlines, emotions and meltdowns.‹‹With the help of GPT-powered dialogs you will quickly get to the bottom of any issue and know what to do next. We welcome everyone to add Debrief to your team Slack, try it for your work stress management and let us know about your experience. PS I want to say huge thanks to our CTO @sergeypetrov, operations lead @lyudmila_golubkova and marketing lead @formasha. And all the guys and girls from https://goodit.works team who helped us with the development process!

Looks intriguing, but I wonder how does self reflection routine help improve team harmony? Is there any hard data for that?
Roman Potapenko
@timur_rustamov That is a great question indeed, often asked by team leaders. Here is what we do in our team. We have a #debriefs channel where everyone could put their reflections during the week (those that aren't personal). No immediate reaction from the team is needed – everyone could check them out at their own pace. At the end of the week we go through them with the focus on how the person was feeling – and what event caused this feeling. In 95% of cases we discover a process inefficiency, a vague task or something else that causes frustration. Case by case our team started to share more and keep inside less. Collaborative mindset has improved significantly as well as personal well-being.

Noble goal! Who from the team reads my responses on Debrief in Slack? What is the essence of a safe environment?
Maria Formaniuk
@new_user_221e925738cc7 Hey Ksenia, each time when you finish a debrief scenario, a summary link will appear — there's an option to share its content via email, if you feel like it. Otherwise each teammate has a one on one chat with the bot, it's not a group chat.

A clear and calm mind is all we need to be productive. Great idea, guys! Congrats on the launch and best of luck. BTW, what about other messengers?
Maria Formaniuk
@mujaji Hey Kirill, thanks for your support! Do you have any particular messenger in mind?

Can you explain the interaction between Debrief, Slack, and the Slack owner? At first glance it seems like an INCREDIBLY bad idea for employees to start dumping gripes and frustrations into a system owned by their employer, who then has direct access to to it all – my understanding is that on paid Slack plans the owner can review logs? But maybe I'm not quite understanding the nuances of program interaction here, so I'd love to hear more about what people who use this can expect on the actual privacy implications.
Roman Potapenko
@jordankrueger Thanks for the great question Jordan! Company culture when employer is reading everyone's messages is a problem in itself. Yet we are not making it worse. First of all, we specifically position Debrief as a team tool work, not a personal journal — meaning, you vent there about work-related issues, instead of venting directly to your co-workers (which people do). We designed the workflow to allow user to chose what he would and wouldn't like to share with the team, but when the above problem is in play, it won't be totally private. This is just a reality of most of the corporate communication platforms. We have an integration with Telegram also (peak privacy), but, again, Debrief is a team tool and using it implies the transparent and caring culture within the team. So if the company had bad policing practices in the first place, I doubt the employees would go in and share even if there's ironclad privacy on the app side.
Jordan Krueger
@roman_potapenko I guess this marketing language of it being "a safe place to vent and relax" just feels a bit cagey to me. It's "safe" in the same way that gossiping with your favorite HR person is "safe" – it's all fun until you something problematic for the company, at which point you're going to land yourself in trouble. I hope there are clear signals in the app for the employees/users to help them understand what can be seen by their employer, and reminders that nothing said on a work-owned device and in work-sponsored software is ever "safe" from prying eyes no matter what branding here says.

All the best with the launch!!!!!!!!!!!
Kartik Mandaville
I installed it but how do I use this?
Roman Potapenko
@kar2905 Thanks for the question Kartik! After a workday, long meeting or a frustrating event you can run a quick debrief, choose from suggested topics and questions and answer them – to organize your thoughts and capture your current feelings. When you are done, you can go to a reflection page where your chat history is summarized. You can edit your reflection, export or share it. Tip: create a #channel in your team where you put your reflections. You could discuss them later in a slow mode – at retro or 1to1s. WIll appreciate your feedback!
Maria Formaniuk
I just love the concept of short and simple guided reflections that @roman_potapenko came up with in Debrief. Mindfulness is what we all want, but when I'm stressed it's only so much stress *management* I can afford. Dropping few lines in a chat sometimes is enough to get out of the stress spiral, and I hope with Debrief more people will get the benefits of self-reflection routine.
