Company of One - A book on why staying small is the next big thing in biz

What if the real key to a richer and more fulfilling career was not to create and scale a new start-up, but rather, to be able to work for yourself, determine your own hours, and become a (highly profitable) and sustainable company of one? Suppose the better—and smarter—solution is simply to remain small? This book explains how to do just that.

Hey all! Years ago I couldn’t let go of the question: what if the byproduct of business success isn’t scale or growth, but freedom? I had a successful business, but I was constantly being pushed to grow it, to hire employees, to become more known, to scale my revenue, to have an office, and to bring in more customers. But the thing was: I didn’t want that. I liked running a small business that could pivot when needed. Not to mention it was making enough to easily support myself and my family, and offered me the ability to take decent chunks of time away from work. At first I figured I was odd for challenging the typical idea for business growth, but then I started to see and hear from others who felt the same. So two years ago I started writing a book on the subject. Company of One will be your guide to building a business around the idea that staying small and questioning growth can be more durable and even more enjoyable. Company of One will be released on January 15, 2019, and is available for pre-order starting now with some pretty awesome bonuses (on the website). Cheers! @pjrvs Congrats on the launch! You should also record an alternative teaser video in your own beautiful silky voice.

@pjrvs Congrats on the announcement! I've been discussing and realizing this more achievable way of business with fellow makers over the last year in my journey to achieve personal sufficiency with Blurt. Technology and tools are enabling it resulting in market fragmentation that is allowing for more focused, personable solutions for the world. Makers are the becoming the new "local corner store" of the Internet. They and digital nomads are becoming a new archetype for the world economy achieving a more human and satisfying way of living. There's also growing backlash to the growth-at-all-cost companies that have wrecked havoc building addictive products and driving incredible burn out to it's employees. It works for some, but for many, as I've experienced, it comes at cost of the lives many people's stories who are never heard. Really look forward to reading and learning from you! P.S. I'd really dig sharing Company of One via an interview with you for a series I'm pulling together for Blurt called "Writer Stories". Be awesome to understand and share your writing process and any tips you have for other writers! Will message you. :) P.P.S. Just discovered Pico. 👀

@pjrvs, this book seems really cool! The idea of a startup achieving skyrocketing growth is noble and very dangerous at the same time. Based on my observations and humble professional experience, many startup founders do not realize the sad truth that when their company starts to grow, they need to employ an entirely different set of managerial skills that they might not possess. I'm definitely keen on learning more about this book and would like to reserve a signed copy if possible! Thanx!
Paul Jarvis
@lubo Thanks Lyubomir! If you want a signed copy, just be in touch in January, I'm sure I can figure that out :)
Sergei Gribovskii
@pjrvs I'm really sorry could I also get a signed copy?
Paul Jarvis
@sgribosvki Yes, we'll have to arrange something in January when the book is out, but definitely be in touch then!
Sergei Gribovskii
@pjrvs Thank you! :)

Clearly I've not read this book as it's not out yet, but since coming across Paul this year I've been avidly consuming his podcast (Creative Class is EXCELLENT), emails, and other content. I LOVE his approach to business. I hate all the pressure on people to grow (in finances, staff numbers, customer numbers) - startup culture has a lot to answer for - and I'm looking forward to getting this book and seeing what Paul has to say. It won't be for everyone - if you're a keen entrepreneur who WANTS to grow a business's quantitative metrics, then it won't be for you. But I'd recommend it even without having read it to any solo business person that wants to stay solo and keep loving what they do. And probably to people trying to grow and finding it stressful too. In fact, that's reminded me, I probably need to buy a copy for a friend! Thanks, Paul, for all the amazing content you put out and for inspiring us all.
Paul Jarvis
@magicroundabout aw shucks, thanks ross!

I can’t wait to read this book and suggest you get it. Paul is one of the few people whose stuff (whatever it is) is an automatic purchase. If you need any convincing, check out the Company of One podcast. Truly great work. Congrats on the pre-launch, Paul. I know this has been a ton of work. Hope it goes really well! 😉
Paul Jarvis

Never used because the book is not out yet. But knowing Paul it must be valuable.
