cmpct.io - The shorter, safer, more useful link shortener

by•

A free online service to create short links; with a difference...
1: Safer: not auto directing to potentially unsafe websites
2: Useful: Group multiple links together!
3: View screenshots of the page before you click

The idea to make a link shortner which shows the real link before redirecting is interesting. The comment/report features also look promising but can be easily misused I guess. Also, personally I would not trust a "secure" URL Shortener which doesn't provide any legal documents (imprint, terms of service, ...) on its site. Nevertheless, good luck with your project!

@anthemaker Yeah report wise is early days, looking to see how it goes and then expand on the feature, like having the ability to weight a report against traffic to a link isn't possible at the moment as I don't record that level of detail. I am able to say that I am working on something to provide a screenshot and site reputation for each link, from a trusted source. So even if the link doesn't look unsafe to you, you may get told that it is. I do intend to put up a privacy policy, but the "secure" element in my description is based around being able to see where you go; as opposed to being sent their without a choice. Though all the code is open source so from a privacy perspective, such things can be evaluated.

@anthemaker More awesome new security focused features have been added that simply don't exist in other link shorteners - as described here https://dev.to/tommcclean/cmpct-...

It would be nice if every link produced brings old comments even if it is already produced. Good job :)

@e2d3m Thanks for the suggestion, I have been considering something like this, but I don't want to show comments on other links without the user's permission as they may be private to the link/person they were sent, so will need to find a way to offer this to the user when they add a comment. And also consider the impact of a comment persisting (slander etc)

I made cmpct.io because I saw a big problem with widely used link shortening services. They are dangerous because when you click on a link you have no idea where it will take you. What happens if your friend is hacked and sends you a link, you are likely to check it out, but it might not be safe. I wanted to create a service you could trust, knowing you can see where you go; before you go there, but I also wanted to make the idea more useful, by allowing you to aggregate links together into one short link. Send a group of dashboards to a colleague, or related news articles to a friend. This is not another website that tells you where a short url will go, it is a website that allows you to create links that are safe. Get sent a link to somewhere shady? Report it to help protect others! And I wanted it to look unique/good, be fast, be free and not harvest your private information. Why not learn more? https://cmpct.io/BgctwPge

We have been quietly adding awesome new features, like the ability to see screenshots before you click; and superior social sharing. Try it out https://cmpct.io/bSQszDt9t
