Given how Amazon has done little to improve Goodreads since the acquisition in 2013, I sincerely hope competing services will push the space forward. So much untapped potential around tribes of people connected around books. Good luck BookTribes!
Thanks @nireyal for hunting us! We built BookTribes as a way for fellow book nerds to discuss books they love with fellow fans.
We believe that behind every great book is a community of fans who love it, and book tribes are where they can come together and learn from each other.
If you ever found yourself reading a book, and wanting to discuss it with someone, this service is totally built for you!
Got to play with an early beta of this app. This is what Goodreads should have been. Not only is a place to keep track of what you've read and reading, but facilitates discussion around books and highlights from books. The most engaging app I've seen in the book space.
Love this concept! Bummed it's not available for Android. I'm always surprised (errr, surprised-not-surprised) when a service launches on iOS only. Depending on where you look, Android has 85% share. Good luck!
@davemorse Thanks Dave! We would love to do Android at some point! Our first priority is to invest in the product before increasing the number of platforms to support.
Great idea - I'm in a slack group that has a book club channel, but this adds so much more color and is much more engaging, especially as the community grows. Good stuff!
As a reader and a writer, I'm excited to see more experimentation in this space. Books are inherently social and there are so many untapped ways to unleash that potential.
@nare_dovla that is exactly what this is for! we are working on building out the friend feature in an even better way... but definitely headed down that path
@dankurani thanks! We found fan and curious to be a lightweight way for building a tribe by connecting people curious about a book with people who've read a book. When you fan or curious a book you receive updates as the tribe grows and people share what they want to discuss.
Wish I had more time to read! Have loved BookTribes since @onambiguity showed me an early prototype in a coffee shop in SF. HMU if anyone wants to geek out over Thinking, Fast and Slow or Innovator's Dilemma :)
thanks a million david! Yeh, the innovator's dilemma is an especially important book for our current day and age. IMO, even startups struggle with it mightily.
Nice app! I love the concept of discussing quotes on the platform. A lot of times, while reading a book, I don't highlight quotes I want to remember right away and end up forgetting the most meaningful parts.
When people are connected, they can do great things. If this binding factor is reading, it opens up new ideas, thoughts, and opinions that you can learn from and use as a mirror to reflect your own perspective on things.
An app like this is great in many ways as it takes a traditional concept like a book club, and makes it inhabitable by people who'd prefer an online alternative. The great difference is in how you're able to enter "tribes" instantly, mingle, and be present inside of multiple ones
at the same time.
It helps that the app is light-weight in design as to keep the experience digestible. I love the fact that I can insert snippets and use it as topic of debate. There's no better way to learn or get to understand the multiple layers of a reading material when you're reading together. Ha! Did I just came up with the beginnings of an awesome tagline? @onambiguity
Anywho, great app and initiative. Curious to see how this grows. Good luck with the launch and may the Gods of scrolls bless thee endeavor. ๐
Love this concept hoping this might be a smarter way to find recommended books based on my interests, and collect important ideas and concepts from the books I've read.
@dundas yeh, i think that the main value that i am getting out of it is indeed in collecting and discussing the important concepts i have read about before.
Echoing everyone else: BookTribes is doing the obvious, only better. I am anxious to see some more biz model innovation from them too. Returning to GoodReads after BT gets fully populated must be avoided!
@kkdub haha, thanks! we have very different metrics from Goodreads. They are primarily about reviews and tracking, we are about discussions and engagement. Hope we will never be like them ;)
This product looks amazing - I've already downloaded the app!
I can't use it though as I don't have a twitter account to sign up with, is there any other method, such as email?
Also, when I clicked 'sign up w/ twitter', it showed that the app would have permission to:
- Read tweets from timeline
- See who you follow, and follow new people
- Update your profile
- Post tweets for you
I was unsettled, to say the least, I'm uncertain why any of that is necessary?
I know you're in Beta & I hope my feedback's been helpful - This has such great potential, I'll be keeping my eye on it!
@ainslie_to thanks for the feedback!
In general, we use the twitter permissions to help you share your book tribes with your friends and make it easier to connect with them on our platform.
For example, if any of your friends on twitter sign up they will automatically follow your books and posts. The post tweets permission will be used to help you share quotes and your book tribes with your friends on twitter via a share button. But, we will never automatically post for you.
