I really wanted Lifecake to succeed, and was excited when Canon appeared to inject some resources into it.
But then everything seemed to just stop. The lack of new features across the 5 years I've been using Lifecake was sad - in the end we have moved to Google Photos which pretty much offers the same features, for free, through Shared Albums.
I'm intrigued what the game plan is for the reboot.
@samrye_enspiral I'm having same thoughts, you invest time and money into an app you think will keep your family photos safe, then just 1 day they say its being shut down. Better to use a more reliable service like google photos or Amazon Photos.
@hiral_patel_hp_ my main complaint with Lifecake was the lack of a hand brake feature where I could export a zip of all my files, so I could import them to wherever was next.
Lifecake allowed me to download all the photos *I* posted, but not those of other people in my group, like my wife, parents and parents-in-law. I had to request those from them.
So I wouldn't think of it as a safe archive for your images, so much as a layer on top of your archive that makes it easy to gather and visualise the journey of your child(ren).
If that's the case, it needs to have things like milestones, maps, search (where / when / who) and really make it an interactive timeline. They never quite executed on that vision unfortunately, from my honest opinion.
@hiral_patel_hp_@samrye_enspiral Hello to both of you, I have no connection with the BackThen team but I will still bring some positive points in reply.
A Google Photos or Amazon is clearly not the same UX/UI and it seems silly but for my grandmother or for some family members less comfortable with technology: it's important.
Maybe Lifecake had a lack of vision/ambition but we have to remenber that the team was not independent and belonged to Canon which perhaps had to allocate little budget for the development of new features.
We can be glad to know that BackThen is now independent, the founders will have more freedom. Finally, I appreciate the fact that there is no advertising, even in a freemium version, it's rare enough to highlight it.
I'm curious to know what the next updates will be.
@hiral_patel_hp_@guillaumco absolutely, I hope now they're independent again (they were bought by Canon shortly after I signed up 5 years ago), the pace of development will grow.
@hiral_patel_hp_@samrye_enspiral@guillaumco I agree with this completely.
Also, the statement "then just 1 day they say its being shut down" is at best inaccurate and at worst ignorant and damaging.
Lifecake gave literally months of notice and they built an extremely seamless process to either download your images or transition to "Back Then".
I’ve been using this for well over a year on iOS (Lifecake) and its amazing. Really amazing.
FYI this app used to be called lifecake but it sounds like the parent company (Kodak) has let the app go, but the original team have just rebranded as “back then”. The app is identical and the migration process from Lifecake to Back Then was nothing short of miraculous.
If you have kids you need this.
@mickc79 It was Canon for Lifecake but anyway, the good news is that BackThen is now independent.
There's a little bit more context on this post: https://support.backthen.app/hc/...
