Hi Product Hunt! We’re Judd, Aaron and Alex, co-founders at Deferred.com. We’re excited to launch ARTE, a free AI research assistant for taxes and accounting. ARTE passes the CPA exam and it’s outperforming human CPAs by 22% 🤯 We built ARTE to automate our own business (we help real estate investors defer taxes with a 1031 exchange), which requires detailed, accurate and well-cited tax research for our customers and partners. We trained ARTE to always share links to its sources and uploaded thousands of documents relevant to tax and accounting for it to rely on. ARTE is already saving hundreds of dollars per hour on research that otherwise would require an experienced CPA or a tax lawyer. Under the hood, ARTE uses Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), OpenAI embeddings, Vercel’s AI Chatbot, Pinecone vector search, and is hosted on AWS using Flightcontrol. ARTE is benchmarked against OpenAI models and human CPAs. ChatGPT 4.0 is almost as good as human CPA candidates, but ARTE outperforms both. You can read more about its performance and benchmarking in this post on our Engineering Blog. Excited for everyone to check it out! It’s totally free—no account required. Happy to answer any questions about ARTE or how we built and trained it in the comments.

Congratulations on the launch of ARTE, Judd, Aaron, and Alex! This sounds like an incredible tool for anyone in the tax and accounting space, especially considering its impressive performance over human CPAs. The fact that it automates research specifically for 1031 exchanges is a game changer for real estate investors. I really appreciate how you’ve integrated source citations into the responses—this adds a level of transparency that's crucial for professionals. I'm curious about the training process you used for ARTE. How did you ensure that the information it provides is not only accurate but also up-to-date, especially in such a constantly evolving field? Additionally, any insights on potential future features you’re considering would be great! I can see ARTE being a valuable asset in the B2B space. Excited to see how ARTE evolves and leads the way in tax research automation! Upvoted!

@blankwebdev Thanks for the kinds words! We choose to benchmark ARTE's accuracy against the CPA exam, which is often considered one of the toughest professional exams in the world. It also has a complex grading system, combining multiple choice questions and task-based simulations. Each year, the exam evolves, with passing grades changing over time and published quarterly. For 2024, for many exam types a score of greater than 45% is considered passing, which speaks to how grueling the exam is. Going forward, we’re excited to extend ARTE to cover more real estate tax concepts. We also think there are a number of improvements we can make to our novel testing data sets that will unlock another major improvement in performance gains relative to baseline models. We’re also interested in exploring improvements to the user experience, including fine-tuning driven improvements to shape ARTE’s response and some novel UX patterns to collect (and respond with) structured data relevant for real estate investors. We wrote more about how we benchmarked ARTE for accuracy here: https://www.deferred.com/eng-blo...

@jjjjuuuuddddddd This looks amazing, I can see this helping people a lot with tax related paperwork 👏🏻 Would love to see this in the EU as well, tax laws are very complicated over here. Congrats on the launch 🚀

Congratulations on your launch guys! Considering the complexity of tax laws in different regions, are there plans to expand ARTE's capabilities to include EU tax laws or other international tax systems?
Judd Schoenholtz
@zara_bottom Thanks Sahiiii! No current plans because our primary business (helping investors navigate 1031 exchanges) is pretty US-centric. But perhaps! We're getting a lot of international tax questions from the PH community :)

@jjjjuuuuddddddd yeah fair, but prolly consider it cuz then you can have a wider target audience!

Whoa an AI that beats CPAs and gives detailed answers? If it’s as good as it sounds, it might just become my new go-to for all things tax and accounting. Really curious to see it in action!

Congrats for launch of ARTE....

Love this (as someone who has put off 1031 due to its complexity for a while). Congrats!

The concept of an AI-powered tax assistant looks promising. With its ability to outperform CPAs and extensive training on tax law, it could be a great resource for handling complex tax questions.

Quite interesting. Upvoted :) Are you guys planning to adapt it to EU/EMEA countries or the focus will be USA only @jjjjuuuuddddddd?
