Apple today announced a unique, multi-year content partnership with Oprah Winfrey, the esteemed producer, actress, talk show host, philanthropist and CEO of OWN. Together, Winfrey and Apple will create original programs that embrace her incomparable ability to connect with audiences around the world. Winfrey’s projects will be released as part of a lineup of original content from Apple.

Apple didn’t offer any other details about what Winfrey would make, and whether she would star in the stuff she makes for them, though it’s a very reasonable bet that she will. She’ll continue to work on other projects, like her Oprah Winfrey Network and CBS’s 60 Minutes.

Apple, Amazon and Netflix have been racing to lock-in producers, showrunners and performers, and paying unprecedented sums to do so. Backed with enormous financial capital, their entry into Hollywood has radically changed the entertainment business and forced traditional studios to pay more for top talent.
Just recently, Netflix announced a partnership with Barack and Michelle Obama, to produce content for their platform.

We still don’t know what Apple’s TV plans are, but we do know Apple wants us to know it is serious about its TV plans. One TV executive who has talked to Apple tells me Apple says it intends to sell a standalone subscription to its original video shows, priced below Netflix, whose standard offering costs $11 a month in the U.S.

[Apple] is prepping shows like a reboot of Steven Spielberg’s “Amazing Stories,” a psychological thriller series from executive producer M. Night Shyamalan, the true crime podcast drama series “Are You Sleeping?” starring Octavia Spencer and Aaron Paul, and an Emily Dickinson series starring Hailee Steinfeld among many others.
Now, with the addition of Oprah to their platform, and surely more exciting additions to come, Apple is putting themselves in a prime position to take on the already-established streaming giants.
