Hi, Product Hunt! I'm Sunny Mabrey, actress, comedian, social media influencer, director, writer, model, animal lover and advocate, and sometimes-musician. What can I say, I'm a fan of the right-brained arts! Dislikes: math. Yeah, mostly math. Although I've been working as an actress and model for a while, the past few years have brought about a new element to my life and career: social media entertainment. In a relatively short time, I've accumulated around 1.4M followers, combined on all of my chosen social networks and continue to grow through connecting with people who also laugh at weird stuff. I was also a Nominee in the 8th Annual Shorty Awards, honoring the best influencers and brands on social media.
Filip Johansen@filip_johansen · I make SoMe 🎥 series for the next 🦄.
What's your best tip when it comes to building a personal brand ?
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@filip_johansen Don't try to build a "brand" at all. Just do what you love, make yourself vulnerable, be brave, put it out there in the world, and someone WILL relate.
Soňa Křenařová@sona_krenarova
Hi Sunny , I'm a big fan of Once Upon a Time. And you're like Glinda was just great! I would like to ask you, then if you have any funny or interesting story from filming Once upon a time? Thank you, xoxo
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@sona_krenarova Hi! Thanks for your question. I enjoyed all of being Glinda, especially the costumes (amazing!) Unfortunately one of them got soaked in mud all the way up to my knees. You can see it in the scene with Zelena at the well. I guess supernatural characters don't hike up their skirts when they "float" through the mud. :) Also, I played Glinda the Good Witch in college. So this was a reprisal!
Soňa Křenařová@sona_krenarova
@sunnymabrey LOL, I'm dying of laughter while really sympathize ... "Glinda, the Good Witch of the muddy lagoon" You were an actress already in college! That's great, I hope I'm lucky enough to go in your footsteps ! And I think I also speak for the other fans ... Thank you for Glinda and wish only beautiful costumes and scenes in dry places ! ❤

If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@ashleynickas I've always though Aaron Chewning and I could make some funny vines together. He lives far away though. He has a lot of followers, but it's not about that to me.. I just want to make stuff with people that make me laugh. Regal Joe is also a riot. I would love to make more vines with Sara Hopkins as well, but she also lives far.

What's the best piece of advice you've ever received and how did it impact your life? Flip side, what's the worst piece of advice you've ever received?
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@ems_hodge Oh man... This is a hard one. My mom always said "To have good friends, you have to BE a good friend." So no more sitting there feeling sorry for yourself. Get out of your own life, go help someone, and be a good friend to someone who's not expecting it. Worst advice would have to be anything that caused me to feel self doubt. "Pick a practical career.", maybe. Although well-meaning, it doesn't encourage me in my right-brained endeavors.
Ashley J. Nickas@ashleynickas · Writer, stage manager, and videographer
Hi Sunny, Your videos about things Southerners say is so relatable because I'm from TN. All the characters you develop are hilarious. Is there one that sticks out as your favorite, and if so why?
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@ashleynickas Hi Ashley! Hmmm.. My favorite southern character would have to be the weird redneck one I do with my Dad. I don't think (she?) has a name lol.. We have so much fun together.
Ashley J. Nickas@ashleynickas · Writer, stage manager, and videographer
@sunnymabrey that's a great one. Do you have a favorite overall character?
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@ashleynickas I always loved the woman who thought she had an assistant named Cheryl. ;)
Ryan Hoover@rrhoover · Founder, Product Hunt
Hi, Sunny! Curious to hear your thoughts on Snapchat. There are many content creators that love it but lament the fact that their content disappears after 24 hours.
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@rrhoover It IS kind of sad to see a great story expire after 24 hours, but we always have the download option! We can string the stories together and give them new life on instagram (which will have a one minute long video option soon), Facebook, Twitter, etc.!
Andrew Ettinger@andrewett · PMM @Twitter // Previously @ProductHunt
As an "influencer", what is your vetting process for potential partner/sponsorships? Is there an industry standard fee structure (eg $1 per like)?
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@andrewett I have a couple agencies (and a fabulous manager) who helps me wade through the sponsorship/advertising offers, thankfully. I think there is a particular sum or way of figuring out how much someone should be paid based on followers/engagement, but there are many other factors that come in to play.. What type of audience does the person have? What is their work history besides this platform? Everyone basically surveys whether it's a client I want to represent, then comes to a monetary number and agrees on it.
Erik Torenberg@eriktorenberg · Former Product Hunt
Hey Sunny! Can you share with us your come up story? How did you get your first break?
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@eriktorenberg Hey Erik! I started as a model in Atlanta (near my home in Alabama). My mom showed my picture to a high school friend who had become a modeling agent in Atlanta. She liked my look and sent me off on the modeling circuit (Paris, Miami, etc.). I went back to school, got my BA in theatre at University of Mobile (a private liberal arts school). I then went to NY for a while, finally ending up in Los Angeles, modeling and acting. Vine came much later. :)

Sunny what do you say to teens who may be "over influenced" by their social channels?
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@gregjcross Go outside! Seriously. I know it sounds like an old person thing to say, but go camping and leave your phones in the car. Also, CHURCH. :)
Abdou Baldet@abdou_baldet
Hi Sunny, thanks for this AMA. Do you use natural products? What are you favorite wellness objects or practice?
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@abdou_baldet Always cruelty-free! Paula's Choice is my absolute fav for skin care. I exercise a lot and try to eat low carb, organic, and humanely-raised.
Soňa Křenařová@sona_krenarova
Hi Sunny, again 😁. It strikes me so many questions about why they're so interesting person! I do not know what to ask before ... So maybe I would really like to know what led you to become an actress? Thank you ❤
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@sona_krenarova I just love entertaining people, and I love telling stories. I also love creating stories, so look for more of those to come!
Daniel Lee@dleesta · Product Manager
Hi Sunny, I recently learned about Essena O’Neill's story about quitting IG and YT. What are your thoughts/feelings on social media as a space for us to be more authentically ourselves vs. a space to create a fantasy of our ideal selves? And then as someone who has amassed a large following, why do you think people follow you?
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@dleesta I think people ultimately follow me because they relate to some strange vulnerable part of me that I like to express through being silly. I know the internet is a very difficult place to put yourself out there. I've experienced it first hand, and it can bring you down. As soon as the negatives start to outweigh the positives, that's when I'm out. I totally understand anyone's decision to take back their privacy.
Harry Stebbings@harrystebbings · Podcast Host @ The Twenty Minute VC
Thanks so much for joining us today, I would love to hear what have been the major spikes in your social media following uptake> What moments really propelled them and how did those moments come about? Big fan btw!
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@harrystebbings Thank you! Thanks for joining. I think there's no real rhyme or reason to something going "viral" in the internet world. I think there have been a few moments where "just plain funny" collided with timing and other awesome talented people and/or animals, and it acquired me more followers as a result. You can now sort vines by "most popular" and it's interesting to see the ones that really brought the house down.
Austin Sandmeyer@as_austin · Thinker/Student/Rockstar
Hi Sunny, I would love to hear about how you work with developing and new social media platforms. How do you assess if that's something you are interested in? Or do you leave the experimentation to other people? 😊
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@as_austin Hi! If it's something that other people (or the creators of the new app) ask me to try, I definitely go on and grab my screen name (I like to keep it @sunnymabrey across the board), in case it becomes the next big thing, and then I try it out and see if it's fun. If it's not fun, I probably won't stick around. I like fun. If I see other people really thriving on it, I give it more of a chance because maybe there's a learning curve. :)
Jerry Sarpong@jerryluti · Tech Enthusiasts
Great you are joining us today, I want to know how you became social media influencer and how you manage that with usual job.
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@jerryluti Thanks for being here! I became a social media influencer by just writing tweets that made me laugh, which evolved into making short videos (vines) that made me laugh. I was already an actress and had no idea this other form of entertainment would grow so rapidly, but was pleased to find that people enjoyed me making an ass of myself as much as I did. Managing the social media side along with being an actress hasn't been easy, as my life was already pretty full, but I have thoroughly enjoyed the luxurious "problem" of reprioritizing and making room for my social media career and life. It's been a fun ride, and I hope it keeps going!

@sunnymabrey nice am blessed to learn from you

What do you think about the old saying that many models use their beauty to be gold diggers?
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@matt_insomi Hi! Maybe that's true for some, but I don't believe it's common among models. For most of us, it's just a job. :)
Greg Cross@gregjcross · storyteller storyscaper
@matt_insomi why that q? : /
Matt@matt_insomi · Individual Investor
@gregjcross because I know many models.
Geoff Magliocchetti@mags · Writer
Hi Sunny huge fan! You've played a lot of roles, in both movies and on Vine that are very diverse and different. Which of your roles, film or Vine, would you say was the most challenging?
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@mags Thanks Geoff! I HAVE played a lot of diverse roles.. It's a blessing and a curse. I'd say one of the most challenging was in a movie I did called One Last Thing. I was playing a very complicated and angry person. There was a lot of emotion (and holding back of emotion) I had to wade through in the character. It required a lot of work, but I loved it. I love drama just as much as I love comedy.
Ben Tossell@bentossell · newCo
Do you use Snapchat for stories or looking to use it?
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@bentossell Hmm.. I'm not sure I totally understand what you mean, but I love Snapchat for many reasons. I probably feel the most free to be myself on there. I can be silly, or I can go on a rant about something serious to me. I always post to "My Story" and I watch a lot of other people's stories as well. I love communicating with people who respond to my story as well.
Ben Tossell@bentossell · newCo
@sunnymabrey ahh my bad, I think just because you mention Instagram and Vine but not snapchat so was wondering if you are trying to push that channel too?
Ben Tossell@bentossell · newCo
What advice would you give your 20 year old self?
Sunny Mabrey@sunnymabrey
@bentossell Good question. I'd say "Hey, Sunny, it's ok to try really, REALLY hard. Now is the time. Keep doing what you love, but work even harder at it. No one is going to hand you anything."
