Hey Guys I'm Rachel Hollis. I run Chic Media in LA... a media company specializing in premium content for women. This month we're launching our first-ever podcast focusing on women who are crushing it in business and I'm so excited about it I might pee my pants. I'm excited to talk about ALL the things (work, entrepreneurship, writing books, producing podcasts, managing a team, how hot Sam Hunt is, etc) so ask away!
Daeshawn Ballard@imdaeshawn · Marketing Director, Imagine Careers
Hi Rachel, I've never head of Chic Media, but now I have and it looks like you've built something to be very proud of. You come across as very personable and relatable in your writing and that's awesome. My question goes back to the early days of Chic Media. How did you go about building your early community and how did you stay engaged with them? P.S I've listened to Small Town by Sam Hunt more time than I care to admit. Thanks!
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@imdaeshawn I built my community (700K+ on Facebook, 40K+ on Insta, etc) one person at a time. Often companies fight so hard to cast a wider net... but 2 million fans don't mean anything if you have no engagement with them. We spend a huge amount of time making sure our tribe feels seen and known and cared for. They in turn tell their friends which is how we grew so big. Take care of the community you have and they will take care of you. Also, Sam Hunt is a dream boat!
Daeshawn Ballard@imdaeshawn · Marketing Director, Imagine Careers
@msrachelhollis Haha, I really appreciate your time and answer!
Emily Hodgins@ems_hodge · Community and Marketing, Product Hunt
Hi Rachel thanks for joining us today. What top tips can you share with the Product Hunt community about launching business? Where there any lessons you learnt the hard way that you can share to help others just starting out?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@ems_hodge Oh my gosh, SO many lessons I learned the hard way... that's the only way I know to learn. I guess first of all, don't be overwhelmed. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. When you're first starting you make this to-do list that's 900 pages long and then you freak out because it's too much to handle. Focus on the most important: what do I have to do FIRST to start making money. Begin there. Fancy business cards or a cool office space are great but often unnecessary. Don't get bogged down in the nice to have... focus on the NEED to have. Nice to have costs a lot of money ;)
Sarah Lee@sarah_lee3
Hi, Rachel! I've been part of the #chictribe for a bit now and love what you have built. When deciding which goal(s) to pursue, how do you decide what's next when I'm sure you have a long list of your aspirations? It's hard to split time and attention (cookbook, writing a book, building a company, engaging an audience, etc.) and I know starting it's even more important to focus BUT I often feel paralyzed by the options and passions I have. Thoughts?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@sarah_lee3 YES! This is such an important question and I have been teaching myself to fight back against the temptation to do ALL the things year after year. My newest adopted motto is, just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD. Choose a goal for the year... or even a couple and then create a road map to that goal. Whenever a new opportunity comes up (I don't care how awesome) you have to ask yourself if it fits into your year's goal. If it doesn't, you CANNOT focus energy on it. I think as entrepreneurs we worry that if we don't do it now the opportunity won't come around again. It's just not true. Be so good they can't ignore you is one of my favorite sayings-- if you put your head down, do the work and become great at it you will always have new opportunities.

What insights did you gain into the business world by starting this podcast?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@alisonchicmedia My favorite thing in interviewing these incredible women is that they all have different perspectives on what matters most. I asked everyone at the end of their interview "what's the one piece of advice you'd give to a fellow woman in biz" and every single one of them had a different answer. That's so incredible! There's a wealth of information in our peers and I love finding out what unique thing everyone can teach me.
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
Hey guys, thank you SO much for all the awesome questions and for totally keeping me on my toes. I loved hanging out with you and I hope you found my ramblings at least slightly helpful. xo, Rach
Noah Steven@recordexecutive
Hi Rachel, I hear you have a Podcast "Dais" launching June 13th, I'd love to hear about what inspired you to start it and also do you have any guests on the podcast?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@recordexecutive YES! My podcast launches this coming Tuesday and it's called Dais. I listen to so many business podcasts but I feel frustrated about the lack of women being interviewed. So I set out to make one that features bad ass women in business. Our lineup for season one is incredible: the head of marketing for Kate Spade, head casting director for Food Network, Global products lead for Mattel, authors, agents, massive social influencers... a bunch of women who have incredible platforms and share tangible advice on how to increase your own.
Vic Ky@vic_ky1 · Android Developer
HI Rachel , i want to promote my android app but give me some tips thanks
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@vic_ky1 I am a social media fanatic and I've used it for everything from launching books to selling out events to building a tribe. I would focus heavily on getting the word out through your own social platforms and a social influencer campaign. What's your app about?
Ben Tossell@bentossell · newCo
If you could interview anyone in the world who would it be and why? And what would you ask them?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@bentossell Great question... I love Phil Knight. I admire him so much I could cry just thinking about it... if you all haven't read his memoir Shoe Dog, go buy it RIGHT NOW! I would ask him everything about what it meant to build Nike. He struggled for so many years and as an entrepreneur, it's comforting to hear about someone who is so successful and what it took to get there.
Ben Tossell@bentossell · newCo
@msrachelhollis Shoe Dog was read within days of it arriving at my apartment. I loved it too! Great answer
Ben Tossell@bentossell · newCo
If you had to swap lives with a tech CEO for a week who would it be and why?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@bentossell Dang it Ben, good questions! Sheryl Sandberg but only if I got to be inside her brain while I traded places with her.
Dominique Castellanos@dominique_castellanos
Hi Rachel! You run a successful company, you're an author, and you do so many other things. What would you tell your 21 year old self?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@dominique_castellanos To focus. When I was younger I chased a hundred different things... all as part of my business, but still too many things to see real traction. As I've gotten older in business I understand that the more energy you put behind ONE thing the further along it goes. I wish I could have taught my 21 year old self about goal-setting and taking one thing at a time.
Sarah Lee@sarah_lee3
From the women you interviewed for the podcast (and maybe just in general), are there any recurring habits/disciplines these people live/swear by?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@sarah_lee3 Every single one of them talked about the importance of sleep and I could NOT agree more. If you want your body to function at the highest level then you have to take care of it.
Noah Steven@recordexecutive
@msrachelhollis @sarah_lee3 Excellent point...Any personal insight on how to obtain sleep with an incredibly busy schedule as an entrpreneur and business owner?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@recordexecutive @sarah_lee3 I'm pretty hardcore about bedtime... I'm typically asleep by 9:30 every night. I don't watch TV or play on my phone in the hour before I go to sleep because i don't need ANY help with my brain surging with information.
Shelby Calhoun@shelby_shelbb · Project Manager
Hi Rach! #ChicTribe here. How do you handle the grind without letting it impact relationships with family and friends. Are there lines you draw? Do you have a hard on/off rule?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@shelby_shelbb I used to be bad at managing work life and home life... I think because I felt like if I wasn't ON every single second for my business it would stop running. I head to learn to put systems in place and to hire the right people so it still functions without me there. I also had to teach myself that the world wouldn't explode if I didn't check my email every 37 seconds. I don't have any hard rules but I try not to look at my phone after 6PM... whatever it is can wait until morning.
Amy Phillip Jagemann@amy_phillip_jagemann · Marketing Manager - busy mom to 4 kiddos
HI Rachel, Given the success you've achieved in life already and the accomplishments you've had, curious what motivates you and keeps you going and so driven?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@amy_phillip_jagemann Oh gosh, have you done your enneagram number yet? I'm a #3... the achiever. Achievers don't need anything to motivate them, it's a part of their makeup. The second they accomplish something they're already fired up about what's next. I have big grandiose dreams for my company. I believe we are going to be the leader in media content for women and in doing so that we can affect the kind of media women receive in a positive way. We've got some work to do before we get there. Whenever your dreams are that big, it's impossible to lose your motivation.
Emily Hodgins@ems_hodge · Community and Marketing, Product Hunt
What's the best piece of advice you ever received? How did this impact you?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@ems_hodge "The market decides." This is something @garyvee (my spirit animal) says ALL the time. Not direct advice given to me but then, I haven't had a lot of personal business mentors in my life, I haven't had access to them. My mentors were those I found in the pages of books or the interviews in a podcast and I absorb their wisdom like a sponge. I love the reminder that the market is the market is the market... the market doesn't care if you're male or female or the color of your skin or your weight or whether you've got a staff of two or a staff of a hundred... it cares about what's good. The market decides what it likes and if your content isn't working it's a waste of time to cry about it or try and force it to work. Watch the market, listen to your audience, that's how you learn to get better and produce in a way that sells.
Dominique Castellanos@dominique_castellanos
What's the best way you deal with stress?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@dominique_castellanos Deal with stress offensively... if you wait until you are stressed it's too late. Workout, meditate, pray, whatever works for you but choose a practice to incorporate daily that manages your stress in advance. Also, perspective... being overwhelmed by the amount of work on your plate can be crippling if you choose to see it something stressful. If instead, you see it as exciting or a blessing when so many other businesses don't have enough work it will change the your body process it.
Alison Coen@alisonchicmedia
You manage people and are dealing with the business side of blogging, and is rarely talked about. What is a piece of advice you would give to a blogger who wants to make it her business and not just a hobby?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@alisonchicmedia Do it consistently. Blog one day a week and post it at the same time on the same day so your audience starts to get set in the habit and so do you. Too many people write sporadically on their blog (or their social media for that matter) and wonder why they don't have an audience.
Michelle April Lopez@michelle_april_lopez · Operations Manager
Hi Rachel, What is the one thing you're crushing it in business and what tangible advice do you have for this?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@michelle_april_lopez I think we are crushing it our relationship with our online community. Very few other influencers or media companies put as much time and thought into how to serve their tribe well. It's how we've built to where we are.
Emily Hodgins@ems_hodge · Community and Marketing, Product Hunt
What apps or products have you discovered recently that you can't now live without (or just really like;))?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@ems_hodge Lord, I feel like I'm SO behind the times with my apps but Instacart + Postmates were LIFE CHANGING for me. Both my husband and I have such busy schedules so anything that can help us save time is everything. Also, TripIt has been an awesome help as my business travel has increased to several times a month.
Noah Steven@recordexecutive
In a world filled with ideas, how do you decide which one to focus your attention on? You mentioned that it's important to prioritize based on the market and in general... Is it a gut feeling for you or some other way you determine which idea you think is the best to pursue now verus later?
Rachel Hollis@msrachelhollis · Founder & CEO, Chic Media
@recordexecutive Honestly, I'm trying to be better and not going with my gut and focusing instead on what my YEARLY goal is. For the longest time I focused on what my ultimate goal was and in that scenario, almost every idea is a winner. But as my schedule increases and our team gets more and more projects to work on we have to prioritize. All idea might be great but if they don't get us closer to the next goal they're a waste of time.
