Kanyi Maqubela@km · ex-partner, collaborative fund
Hi, my name is Kanyi Maqubela, and I'm very excited to talk with you all! After a few failed startups, a moderate success with 1BOG ($NRG), and a decade in the Bay Area, I ended up joining my friend Craig Shapiro at Collaborative Fund, where I'm a Partner. We are an early stage investment firm that has made over 60 investments at the intersection of 'for good' and 'for-profit', and we back the shared future. Some of the highlights of our portfolio have included investments in food (Din, Hampton Creek, Sweetgreen, Good Eggs), consumer finance (Kickstarter, AngelList, Inventure, Upstart), and education (Hopscotch, Code Academy), and the Maker movement (Particle, MakersRow, Make Media). I'm very interested in chatting about social impact in innovation, about navigating personal failure, about the future of a collaborative economy, and about whatever else you're interested in. Ask me anything!

Kanyi! Two questions: 1. VC has changed with the introduction of crowdfunding, platforms like AngelList, and the overall increase in the number of angel investors. What's the biggest change yet to come to venture in the next decade? 2. And on a more serious note, what do you think of Drake's Hotline Bling music video?

@km thank you so much for joining us today! Earlier in the week @mazzeo described you as the happiest guy in tech. What do you think contributes to this happiness?

Kanyi, thanks for being here! Do you think innovations in tech (especially those at the for good/for profit intersection) have the power to solve some of the world's biggest issues, or do you think there's more to it that needs to supplement tech innovations? If so, what?

Hi Kanyi! If you want to make a difference with a "for good" organization, what are your thoughts on when it's better to build as a non-profit vs. a for-profit?
Daniel Adeyanju@nycdan_ · ops mgr
@km I really like @melissajoykong's questions. The millenial driven generation is more purpose driven than any before us. We want to make a difference. How do we make that difference, and find purpose, while sustaining ourselves. Most startups are solving a first world "problem" with little impact ---- If you want to make a difference with a "for good" organization, what are your thoughts on when it's better to build as a non-profit vs. a for-profit? What statement do you hear most often when getting pitched that immediately makes you understand the opposite is true? What is it about founders that you can really bet on that only reveals itself over longer periods of time?

Hello @km ! great to meet you here. I have 2 question 1) For a first time entrepreneur do you have any suggestions/resources for getting legal help? 2) What according to you are the consistent hurdles you face in building a company based on Collaborative Economy
Hi @km -- Education and academics are a very interesting field right now, one that Collab Fund is involved with in areas like Code Academy. Where do you see this industry moving over the next few years?
Javier Torrez@jactorrez
Outside of creating tools to innovate learning and succeeding IN school, What do you think it'd take to convince the millions of potential college students and high school students that there's other alternative paths to success that don't include going to college?
@km Hey Kanyi! Two questions (maybe 4): 1) What's your definition of social impact? Do you think the definition is subjective/objective? 2) We're seeing cracks in capitalism. What do you think is the alternative for the future?
Jonathan Van@johnnyhvan
Hey Kanyi. First heard of your awesomeness on Matt Mazzeo's blab! What attracted you to joining Collaborative Fund and what was the transition like from EIR to Partner? Lastly, what's the greatest lesson your mom or dad taught you?
