Hey, I'm Josh Samman, UFC fighter, writer for UFC.com and BloodyElbow.com, and author of the memoir The Housekeeper: Love, Death, and Prizefighting. I own a Mixed Martial Arts organization in Florida, called Combat Night, and coach seminars on martial arts. I have several points of view to gain experience from, and am happy to represent the sport.

What are the 3 resources that have most improved your life? (blogs, books, movies, advisors, etc)
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
Personal relationships (if that's a resource?), music, and exercise

I recently watched Conor lose to Nate, and Holly lose to Miesha. Both were upsets many fans didn't seem to expect. When you're watching a fight, are there certain things you see in a fighter that hint at what direction things will go during the fight (like overconfidence, stance, facial expressions, etc)? What's the first thing you look for in your opponent when you get into the ring?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@melissajoykong Once someone starts breathing heavily, it usually spells the end for them before long. In the ring, I'm looking for a sign that they are unsure of themself from the beginning.

Hey Josh! How many UFC fighters are also writers?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@jeffumbro there's a guy name Danny Downes that contributes to MMAJunkie.com. Some have blogs. I'm not sure about others.

Recently, @garyvee wrote this: "Being an entrepreneur is a lot like being a fighter in the UFC. In the UFC, everybody’s going to get smashed in the face. It’s just part of the sport. Entrepreneurship is the same—there’s going to be hard blows you’ll have to take along the way. Shake it off and get back up. You may lose the round, but there’s still the whole fight left." What's your take on losing?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@melissajoykong @garyvee I watch a lot of fights, and have seen plenty of unbeatable people lose, sometimes harshly. It's best to remember that losses are inevitable, and are going to be part of the sport.

Do you see technology playing a part in the sport? Will it have a more prominent part in the future of the sport?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@ems_hodge Absolutely. I'm on the internet often, reading articles and watching videos on technique. Things like that weren't available in the beginning of the sport.

Hey Josh, what's your diet regimen when you're in training mode?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@dleesta Mostly pescatarian, although I will eat some poultry white meat occasionally. Very low on butters and oils.

While most people focus on the physicality of UFC fighting, I'm sure the mental strength required is just as, if not more, important. What's your process for staying mentally tough during training, but also in the middle of a fight—especially if you're losing and exhausted?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@melissajoykong During training it's best to keep a head-down-keep-grinding attitude until fight day. During the fight, I like to have a few things I know I'll draw inspiration from, and keep them in the back of my mind until I need them if the going gets tough.
Emily Hodgins@ems_hodge · Operations @ Product Hunt
Hi Josh, who or what do you take inspiration from?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@ems_hodge I draw inspiration from everywhere I can. My mom, and a few of those around me are what seem to motivate me best.
Jake Crump@jakecrump · Community Team with Product Hunt
What does a typical day look like for you?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@jakecrump If I'm preparing for a fight, my days are a blur of gym sessions. Wake up and train, eat, sleep, and repeat. If I'm not getting ready for a fight I like to write, play guitar, and go to the beach.
Jake Crump@jakecrump · Community Team with Product Hunt
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@jakecrump I reckon that will be a year or so after I've wrapped up my MMA career, so hopefully I will have found something else to get my kicks.
Emily Hodgins@ems_hodge · Operations @ Product Hunt
During your career, has there been one moment that stands out to your as most surprising? Something that perhpas shocked you or took your breath away?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@ems_hodge My fight against Eddie Gordon on Dec 6, 2014, was the best of my career.
Zac Coffman-Magaha@zaccoffman · Marketing Generalist 2 at PayPal
Big time MMA fan here, always am interested in different outlooks on things... We've recently seen footage of Aldo's post-fight reaction to his loss, a brief glimpse of Conor's post-fight loss reaction as well. While I hate asking this as your last fight resulted in a loss (I had you on my UFC Fantasy, FWIW), what is your process for coming out of a situation such as a loss?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@zaccoffman Hey Zac, thanks for putting me on your team. Tamdan was a tough dude, and was just better than me that night. I deal with the loss by recognizing that I need to improve.
Erik Torenberg@eriktorenberg · Former Product Hunt
what's best advice you ever received from your parents?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@eriktorenberg My mom taught me to earn for ourselves, and give back where we can.

Hi Josh! Would love to know your approach to mobility & recovery. Do you dedicate time to it everyday? Any routines you go through?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@mscccc The first thing I do every morning is stretch, and I dedicate another 20 minutes or so a day to it.
Lesley Wu@deleted-407305
hmm,Josh, may i ask you how to gain weight?fast and easy way...
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC

Lesley Wu@deleted-407305
thank you!

What was the most challenging part of writing your memoir?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@ems_hodge The timeline is written nonlinearly, so it was a big challenge to structure it in a way that makes it work for the reader. Besides that, there were personal moments that were sometimes tough to dig into.
Emily Hodgins@ems_hodge · Operations @ Product Hunt
How do you balance your writing with your fighting? The two on the outside appear to be very different disciplines?
Josh Samman@joshsamman · Josh Samman, UFC
@ems_hodge Fighting helps to give me a platform for the things that I write, so they work together.
