Before creating the hit WNYC / NPR show "Snap Judgment" (Storytelling, with a BEAT) I worked as an educator, diplomat, community activist, actor, political strategist, fist-shaker, mountain-hollerer, and foot stomper. I composed music for the Kunst Stoff dance performances in San Francisco, rocked live spoken word poetry in Detroit, joined a band in Indonesia, wrote several screenplays, painted a daring series of self portraits, released a blues album. My stories are best served with cocktails. ;) Happy to be here, ask away!

Wow Glynn! What an intro 🙌 Makes me wonder: Where is one place you want to visit that you haven't been before?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@jacqvon I really have a hankering to go to North Africa. Maybe Morocco. The writer Tahir Shah (who has been featured on Snap) has a restored a Caliphate home near a shantytown on the outskirts of Casablanca. I have to find a way to get there!

What are your thoughts on the future of podcasts? What do you think is currently most broken? What are you excited to see improve?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@alexcartaz We are are the very beginning of the Golden Age of audio. The vitaltiy of the podcast space is inviting so many new and talented storytellers to the medium, it's super exciting to watch. But the archetecture of podcasting is broken. Their is still no universal app that let's people share and comment socially, and provides the two-way between the podcaster and the audience.
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@alexcartaz Organizing and optimizing this space from both a listener perspective and a creator perspective is key. Someone's gonna crack that nut, and it's gonna be awesome.

Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@alexcartaz Alex, that's like asking me "what is your favorite child?" But here are a few that really stick with me: J Dilla's Lost Scrolls / http://snapjudgment.org/j-dilla%... Get Right With Your God: http://snapjudgment.org/get-righ... The Girl in the Hallway:
Insidious:

@glynnwashington thanks for joining us today! 🙌what has been the most surprising moment working on Snap Judgement?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@ems_hodge The good news is that I'm surprised often. Mostly by the incredible kindness and humanity of the people that share their stories with us. Don't be fooled -- there are good people left in the world.

Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@rrhoover I love a Bombay Sapphire and tonic, yo! But I am very open to suggestion as far as my alcohol consumption.

What's the most challenging thing about being a podcast host?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@melissajoykong The business of podcast / radio / audio is by far the most challenging thing. It took a tremendous amount of energy, luck, and planning, love, tears, and elbow grease to start Snap. It has always been hard keeping the lights on at a small arts organization. We have had a real roller coaster from a sustainability perspective.

What's your favorite WNYC show outside of your own?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@jeffumbro I'm new to WNYC, and I haven't heard everything yet. But what a roster! On the Media, Death Sex & Money, Note to Self, Radiolab, Only Human -- shoot -- can't wait to dive in . . .

@glynnwashington Hi Glynn! Super fan here!! I have tried many storytelling podcasts, but none seem to fill me the way Snap does. Why is Snap's storytelling format important/relevant, and do you think (hope) the stories influence public opinion on sensitive issues like healthcare, racial profiling, disaster relief etc.?

Thanks for joining us. What are your favourite questions to ask in an interview and what would you advise someone starting out in the interview industry?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@harrystebbings Listen to everything and everybody. And not just interview. Listen to storytellers, comics, and everybody else. And you may not believe it, but one of the very best interviewers in the world is Howard Stern. He gets stuff out of people that no one does. Take notes on Howard . . .

Glynn, thanks for being here! How has being from a city with as much history as Detroit informed your time as a diplomat/activist? And along that line, how do you feel about present "revitalization" efforts in Detroit and the effects of gentrification on the city? #DetroitVsEverybody <3 Thanks!
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@lejlahunts Detroit, of course, comes with me everywhere I go. But being absent for so long, aspects have become alien enough, so that I don't feel armed to analyze the current revitalization efforts.

Glynn, thank you for all the stories! What are reading right now? And what book(s) have you gifted the most?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@muller_adam My list of favorite books changes day by day, hour by hour, perhaps even minute by minute. But right now, as I write this, here are my current list of favorite books. All of these are fiction except for "Between The World and Me", which recently left me trembling. (And yes, of course I know what a tremendous ass Orson Scott Card is -- but the Ender Wiggin Series is still brilliant. Please borrow it from someone so that he doesn't get paid from the sweat of your brow. ) My Favorite Books Today: The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz Americanah, by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, by N. K. Jemisin The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie Ender's Shadow, by Orson Scott Card The Golden Compass Series, by Philip Pullman Between the World and Me, by Ta-Nehisi Coats The Great Brain, by John D. Fitzgerald American Gods, by Neil Gaiman The Gone Away World, by Nick Harkaway Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides White Teeth, Zadie Smith Shantaram, by Gregory David Roberts A Spell for Chameleon, Piers Anthony

@glynnwashington what has been your proudest moment?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
My proudest moment always have to do with these kids I get to raise. The moment you think you have their limits figured out -- they blow you out of the water. And even though I have almost nothing to do with their successes, my chest still swells with pride regardless.

@glynnwashington Hi Glynn! How often do you listen back to your old shows? How do you keep improving? 😃
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@mscccc My "reflection" of an episode generally happens immediately after we air it. I sit down, listen, and think of everything we could have done better, or differently. The issue, of course, is that with a weekly show -- we're never gonna hit anything close to perfection. And sometimes it hurts me to hear old episodes. But we have an amazing team -- and they are hell bent on improving every aspect of the program.

Glynn, great to have you here! What's the riskiest professional or personal decision you've ever made that you're really glad you did?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@melissajoykong The riskiest decision I ever made was moving to Japan when I was 19. It was a tremendously positive experience, but it strained a romantic relationship past the breaking point. I also noticed that people go on with their lives when you are not there . . .
Michael Crosby
Michael Crosby@miketcrosby
I always love your opening stories, are any of those actually real life for you?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@miketcrosby All of my personal stories are true -- unless they are presented as obvious fantasy (Pinochio, Superman, etc.) It's nuts, but I usually have to simplify the stories -- cause folk would never believe the full craziness . . .
Michael Crosby
Michael Crosby@miketcrosby

You were/are a "fist shaker" according to your little bio. How does one make money doing that? Is it like being a mean old man? And, if so, does this mean that me and my friends I can't play on your lawn?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
I was in politics! There's lots of ways to make money there. And lots of fist shaking that happens . . .

What do you most want to accomplish in the next 10 years? And how are you planning on getting there?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@melissajoykong I can't wait to keep pushing different platforms through Snap storytelling. Films, books, movies -- they are all different sides of the same storytelling coin, and every one delights in a different way.

What is one thing you are grappling with right now?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@bentossell I am grappling with focus. Trying to maintain that elusive life / work balance. While I know that nothing gets done unless you find ways to block out the noise -- I have an especially hard time actually doing that.

Do you like comic books? Are you looking forward to the next Star Wars movie?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@dturneresq "The Preacher" comic series may be one of the finest things I've ever read. I just received Alan Moore's "Absolute Top 10" for my birthday - and the Invincible series is also a personal favorite. Of course, if I could be anyone else in the world creatively -- Neil Gaiman is near the top of my list.

Glynn, how do you choose/find these amazing stories and how do you think you've evolved creatively w/ respect to story-telling?
Glynn Washington
Glynn Washington@glynnwashington · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
@benyamtesfai I get to work with an amazing team. Every single person involved demands we create the best show we can. This mean everybody stretches -- and everyone pushes. For me, I am learning how to more effectively tell "soft" stories. Not every piece has to have guns blazing. The most important thing for Snap is trying our best to put listeners inside the perspective of another.

How do you feel about highly produced, fictional audio dramas, such as Limetown? Do you find audio fiction compelling, and do you feel that it has legs to develop into a big genre for podcasting?
Snap Judgment
Snap Judgment @snapjudgment · Host / Executive Producer, Snap Judgment
I think we have not yet begun to even dip our toe into the ocean of possibility for audio drama.
