My name is Eddie O’Neil, platform product manager at Facebook. The platform team builds tools for developers all over the world that help people to interact with apps and websites in new and better ways, including Facebook Login, Analytics for Apps, sharing tools, social plugins, APIs and SDKs as well as the newly-announced Account Kit, Quote Sharing and Save Button at F8 this week.
Hi Eddie, Here are my questions: 1. How many people do you have in a product team? Which roles are they at? 2. What process or methodology do you use in the development process? 3. Which tools do you use? 4. What would you recommend to someone who wants to become a product manager, but doesn't have any experience in this field? Where can he start? Thank you.

@awustro 1/ we typically have 1 PM for 10 engineers. The team I support on Platform has ~5 PMs. 2/ my philosophy on this is that teams should choose whatever process works for them. Many teams use a lightweight task management tool to track work. Some teams have a daily standup. otherwise, I'm not a big believer in asking every team to follow a single process. 3/ one of our superpowers are the incredible tools inside Facebook - one is a homegrown task management tool. I also have 10-25 Quip tabs open at any given time. :) 4/ two suggestions - learn how to think about things both top-down and bottoms-up, zooming in and out from strategy (why, what) to tactics (how)

What's your top challenge working as a Product Manager at Facebook?
M
Eddie O'Neil
@ekoneil · Product Manager, Facebook
@yazeedaloyoun - prioritization. There are so many problems we can solve for people and developers. The challenge is choosing the ones that help developers build great experiences for people and can have the most impact for developers creating apps / businesses.

@rrhoover - hi Ryan, thanks for having me! Excited to be here. :) Two things in my time at FB: 1/ working with the terrific Platform team to bring our products to mobile 2/ growth of our global developer community, especially having 70% of our developer community outside the US

Hi Eddie and thanks for the great tools you provide for the developers. Congrats on the latest announcements especially the Account Kit and the Push notifications. My question is about the Account kit, How will you solve a merge issue if a user first registers in a app with his phone number and later uses the Facebook log in to enter the app (lets assume the app has both login options)? Is there any solution of this accounts merging problem that is very common if an app has more than one option for user authentication. Thanks for your time

@skaterina - thanks! It was a fun week launching products with the team. :) RE Account Kit: agree this is a common problem. The team heard this feedback from a lot of developers this week and is thinking about ways we can help make this better for apps and people. Stay tuned!

HI Eddie, what is the working /flow/process when you guys come up with a new idea or new concept you want to develop? Thanks!
M
Eddie O'Neil
@ekoneil · Product Manager, Facebook
@oliviameng - this varies a lot from team to team since we believe in letting teams and projects operate with a lot of autonomy. We want to make informed decisions based on data and really understanding both people and developers. This often means getting out of the office and talking to people. For Platform, this is especially important as our developer community is increasingly global - in the past year our research team helped us travel to India, Brazil, Germany, and a bunch of other countries to hear from both people and developers. Account Kit came from these discussions. :) Once teams have an idea, they work with design, analytics, and other cross-functional teams to bring them to life. Then we work with partnerships to test them with our global community - for example, Saavn [India's largest music streaming service] helped us test Account Kit in India before the launch at F8 this year.

What's it like working with Mark Zuckerberg? In your opinion, what do you think sets him apart from other CEOs who you've worked with or encountered?

@dleesta - Mark is awesome. He really believes in the mission of the company, and I've always learned from the time I spend with him. He's really insightful, open, and real. Working with Mark is one of my favorite things about being at Facebook.

Hi Eddie, I'm an UX Designer from Vietnam. I have some questions for you. 1. Many people in developing countries like Vietnam still using old iOS devices (6.0) and we want to cover them. But Facebook SDK is supported only iOS 7.0 and newer. Any chance to make a tweak to the SDK to support iOS 6.0. With this, people can log in with Facebook then sync their data to our server. At this moment, our app cannot add Facebook Login because we will lose those users. And because of that, users cannot sync their data if they change the device. 2. I watched video about new Origami Studio and I think it's really cool. But many developers still stuck at making app animation and transition. Will it support export some snippet code to use directly in app developement?

@hoandesign thanks for the feedback. As more regions around the world come online iOS 6 will be important for us to think about. I'll take your point about iOS 6 back to the team to consider.

Eddie, What is the long-term strategy for the entire suite of Facebook platforms and services in terms of a) user growth b) attracting more developers?
M
Eddie O'Neil
@ekoneil · Product Manager, Facebook
@tomstocklein - to me, these really go hand-in-hand. We think about our work in two parts - first, we want people to have great experiences anywhere developers are building apps, websites, hardware, etc and we look at our consumer products as a way to help bring the best of Facebook into apps. Second, we want to help developers build and grow great businesses and to help them solve the problems they see in their communities and around the world. Our long term strategy is to learn from our developer community and leverage Facebook's strengths to deliver products that help them be successful in markets around the world.

Hey Eddie, thanks for doing the live chat! Assessing yourself as a PM, do you find your natural strengths are more aligned with the UX, technical, or business aspects of the job - and which do you find has served you best through your career at Facebook? Has it changed over time?
M
Eddie O'Neil
@ekoneil · Product Manager, Facebook
@skaulana - great question! I came to FB with > 10 years as an engineer building developer platforms but limited experience working on consumer products. The past 5 years has been a crash course in thinking about people, how they experience products, and UX. It's been a challenge but I feel like I'm a stronger PM now that I can look at a problem through multiple lenses. I think it's really important to learn how to approach problems from multiple perspectives - so if you're deep in UX, learn how to think about them from the perspective of a business or from the perspective of a developer.
