@djskee
I'm Scott Keeney, better known as DJ Skee. I have a new TV show on Fuse that you might like every Friday night. I also quit the biggest radio stations in the country last year because I thought the same thing you probably do - radio sucks - and I wanted to help make it good again; enter Dash Radio. 65 free stations powered by the best DJ's and people in the biz with no commercials. I also have a sick obsession with sneakers. Ask me anything

@davidtheconnect great question David. I actually can't think of any books offhand that really break this down as the cycle is ever changing (and faster than books can be published). The reason artists don't like the 360 deal is because labels often give artists horrible terms and take up everything, and often don't do anything with those rights except block them from cool opportunities. Labels have to, and have gotten better in adjusting to the times, and from their perspective it is a necessity as music sales alone won't keep them afloat today. For learning, there are many great articles and resources out there. Follow sites like redef.com which post some great commentary, read the Lefsetz newsletter, and just explore. I'd also check out old books on the industry to see how it was as that can give you an insight to many things and the future

Hey Skee - welcome.
Marc Cuban has called you the "Oprah of Music" -- What is your favorite interview question?

Hey Scott great to see you here. My question is: A majority of the world's population still discover new music on radio. How do you think its going to change with on demand music streaming becoming more stronger every year?
@abhijithcu90 great question. i personally don't think the formula of radio will disappear (obviously i'm a little biased). i think radio works because its free, easy, and thoughtless. streaming services are replacing music consumption. it used to be you'd buy a tape, cd, then MP3- now you just subscribe to spotify. however, it doesn't do a great job at discovery, nor should it. although it will have playlists and features, just like how best buy had end caps, the #1 source of discovery even today is radio. most people don't have time or want to think. Rick Rubin had a great quote where he said he loved DJ's and radio because the music came to him. We think radio will be around, just in a different way... cough * dash

Hi Skee! Thanks for joining us today 🙌. What has been the most memorable moment of your career to date and why?
@ems_hodge there has been a ton! i'll choose something recent: performing at the Yokohama Arena in Tokyo... 12k+ people but half of them rushed the stage! it was a miracle it didn't break and the music stayed on as i was surrounded everywhere i looked by people. have some incredible footage of it too

@djskee bold move to leave radio and pursue your own startup. What do you think of Beats 1 and what would you change if you were running it?
@rrhoover I think Beats 1 is great as it honestly has made a lot of what we do easier. Anytime the biggest company in the world enters your space, albeit indirect in this occasion, it instantly validates your business. However, they just have 1 station which has a primary function of pushing people to subscribe to Apple Music. By them helping make the public aware that good radio can exist (they have some good shows), we see people diving into the space with an open mind, and then discovering Dash... which is 65+ stations all uncensored and free with no ulterior motives. As to what I would do personally is expand (1 channel isn't enough), give personalities more freedom, and make it uncensored (50%+ of the music they play is hiphop... no one wants to hear half sentences all day)

@djskee Hey! what would the you of 2 years ago think of yourself today?
@bentossell great question. I think I'd be happy. I have left the archaic systems that were kind of dull and now have the complete power to control and do what I want back in my hands. I always have been about empowering others and now we have 250+ other amazing DJs who have the freedom to do what they want and express themselves without limits. I wish this platform existed for me coming up, but since no one else did, we built it, and it is the perfect fit for what i do if you look at my history not only in radio and as a DJ, but in marketing, tech, and entertainment.

Hey Skee,
Thanks for doing this AMA.
What's your favorite pair of kicks you own and is there a pair that you don't have but want?
Is there an artist you haven't interviewed or collaborated yet but would like to?
@justinfharris fav pair... probably the Jordan DMP XI. The concord Air Jordan XI is the shoe that started it all for me as a kid, and the DMP is the pinnacle of that. So many other favorites though from the Air Max 90 (and 95) to Jordan 1, IV, V, XIII, etc. Don't get me started, I could go all day! The pairs I really am hunting down now that I could get (even though they are like $8k per pair!) are the green Oregon 5's and the Tokyo 5's. However, it's near impossible, but there are some crazy PE XI's... one no one has seen my boy has (selling for $50k!!) and the other Chris Paul is the only one with, so i don't think i'll get (CP3 is my size though.... hmm)

What are you most proud of?
@ems_hodge most proud of watching others who have worked for me or that I've worked with go on to succeed. From directors who started off as video editors winning awards, to interns running major labels and publishing companies, and friends managing the biggest artists in the world, it is great to watch others grow that you believed in.
@russfrushtick how long it takes to shoot! Ha. Skee TV started at first as a 100% live show, which made it easier in a weird way because you had to fit it all in, but it wasn't as tight. Now we do tape delay and it takes wayyy longer but turns out way better. It also is a total different world... even though we have amassed over a billion views on YouTube, TV still pays way better!
