If you were 25 today, what would you work on?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
Same thing I'm doing now: building businesses and writing books. I didn't start until I was 30 - I wish I'd started earlier. No time like the present to change your world and to change the world.
Martin Skakala@mskakala · Founder & CEO WakesApp.com
Hi Dave, thanks for the AMA. I was wondering when you guys started back in 2006-7 what marketing tactics did you guys use?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
Old fashioned cold-calling to hit up big clients. And blogging, lots of it. I remember when we launched our 1st blog Buzz Marketing Daily in 2006, my wife said, "You can't call it that, then we'll have to post daily." We did anyway, and it worked out REALLY well.

Hi Dave, what are some key things people can expect to takeaway from your latest book, #ArtofPeople?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
53 people skills in 11 categories, all told through stories. A few examples: Why to wear orange shoes, why to always take the water, how to get to know someone well in 3 minutes, the crazy power of validation. It's by far by most important book, and I am SO excited to get some feedback on it from my readers.

You and Gary Vaynerchuk have basically had the same business trajectory. What do you two do differently or the same?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
@jeffumbro Gary's a great guy. I think we both are into the hustle, and obviously we both like to build businesses and speak and write, and yes we both like social media a lot, and put our family first. Wow that is a lot. He curses a lot more than I do. And he's Jets and I'm Mets. But he's a terrific and super smart guy, so I'm always thrilled to be compared to him.

What do you want your tombstone to say? 🔮💀
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
AMAZING QUESTION. I met a man named Frank Lautenberg on a plane several years ago who shaped this answer forever. Link here, but basically, he was an amazing entrepreneur (ADP!) and Senator (Wrote the no-smoking on airlines bill, age of consent to drink). But he told me none of that would be on his tombstone. His kids names would be. So, G-d willing, my tombstone will say "Beloved Father to Charlotte, Kate and Seth. Grandfather to 11. Husband to Carrie. Built a more likeable world." https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/2...

What's the craziest thing you've done, in business or not, that you're cool with sharing?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
I'm cool with sharing everything. Craziest thing I've ever done in business was funding payroll early on myself when we would have missed it otherwise. Craziest thing I've ever done out of business was hitchhike in East St. Louis with a drunk driver taking us back to our hotel across a bridge at 6 am after partying all night and not having any money. Proud of the first thing, ashamed of the 2nd.

What's one of the easiest people skills that's often overlooked, but easily achieved that you can share with us today?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
LISTENING. Listening is so important and so valuable and so easy but so often overlooked. If people get one thing from the #ArtofPeople, I want it to be the power of true, authentic listening, and how to become a better listener.

Hi Dave! One of my goals in life is to write a book, but I'm not a journalist or writer. Based on that, what are your tips to write a book when you are not in the "writing" business? Thanks 🙌
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
Don't try to write a book. Just write, everyday, for as much time as you can. 20 minutes a day. A blog post a day. 50 tweets a day. It doesn't matter, just flex that writing muscle. Before long, you will be able to write a book.
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
PS I love helping people write books! Feel free to schedule time with me at http://ScheduleDave.com

@davekerpen Thanks Dave! I've been doing that, it really helps me to write more and more. I think to write a book is something that happens natural, I'm right?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
@gabrielreynard Takes a ton of discipline. But keep at it!

@DaveKerpen thanks so much for joining us today, massive pleasure as I am a big fan of your writing. My question is how does Likeable Local measure up in the hotly competitive landscape of social media tools? Being blunt, why use you over the plethora of other services? Also, what platform do you think will explode in 2016?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
Great question, thanks for the opportunity for me to sell :) I think there are lots of great tools that do 1 or 2 things really well for SMB's, but few if any others besides Likeable Local that do everything in social that SMB's need. Plus we are the ONLY software that turns EVERY Facebook post into a promoted post automatically, super helpful for SMB's wanting more visibility. I could go on but I've got other questions to answer and don't want to be TOO salesy. :)
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
Also thanks for the kind words btw, Harry! And it seems like a safe answer I'm sure to most of you but Snapchat will explode in 2016.
Ben Tossell@bentossell · newCo
Hey Dave, what do you think of 'emerging' social platforms like peach?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
@bentossell Peach is interesting. I'm careful not to get too swept away in "emerging" social platforms as many will lose (G+, Path, Couple, etc) but of course I check them all out at least to experiment.

Hi Dave! :) So far in your career, what have you done that scared you the most? How'd it turn out?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
@mscccc SO many things scare me. That's the thing I find super interesting about non-entrepreneurs- I think they think that entrepreneurs are fearless, when in reality, we're just as scared shitless as everyone else. I just think entrepreneurs are a bit more driven and courageous. Anyway, to answer your question, starting my 1st business was terrifying. We had a toddler and had to buy our own health insurance. Speaking in front of 3,000 people was scary. I get a high from speaking but always get anxious and scared right before hand too. But of course both turned out great. Fear and worry are a misuse of the imagination.

How has perception of Snapchat changed over the years? And this year specifically?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
@bentossell Snapchat went from being "naked pics disappearing for teenagers" to "just for young people" to "an essential new way of communicating." This year will be an enormous growth year for Snapchat. This year is when Mom shows up to the party.

What three things do you think every new founder should constantly be thinking?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
1) Vision and strategy. 2) Right people in right seats in leadership 3) How to have enough money in the bank. That's is, for new (and old) founders, and CEO's

During your career to date, you've warn many hats and achieved a lot! 🙌 Can you share with us one thing that you're pmost proud of, one thing that's most surprised you, and one thing that's changed you?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
In my career to date, I'm most proud of: getting on the NY Times Bestseller list. And getting on Crain's list of Best Places to Work in NYC 4 straight years. I've been most surprised by how hard it is to raise money from investors even after a successful company. And 1 thing that's changed me is seeing how callous (some) VC's can be.

@davekerpen hey Dave! Thanks for joining us. Curious what you think of GIFs as a way of communicating a message and grabbing attention, compared to videos, or images (particularly on Twitter). And a follow up, any thoughts as to why Facebook as not really embraced GIFs?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
@nivo0o0 I haven't been a huge fan of GIF's but I've watched as my mostly-millenial team @LikeableLocal is totally obsessed with them. I think they're a huge way of communicating, grabbing attention, and entertaining. Which is why we recently added GIF's to our content library at @LikeableLocal and in our @LikeableHub app. I think Facebook may see GIF's as a bit unprofessional / immature as a publicly traded / grownup company? Just speculating, not sure why really.

Do you dream? Do you have any recurring dreams/nightmares?

What do you think of the future of Twitter?
Dave Kerpen@davekerpen · CEO, @LikeableLocal, Author #ArtofPeople
I am a huge fan of #Twitter. But I am extremely concerned about the future of Twitter. I just don't see mass consumer adoption of the product like I did with Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, even Snapchat. People STILL don't get it. "Mom" doesn't get it. It's a bummer, because I love Twitter, but I don't think the future is bright.
