What inspired you to write a book about vlogging?
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@vincenzolandino My community. They asked for it and I showed up for them. They are the driver of everything I do.

A book about video? Who are you trying to reach and what do you feel is the biggest barrier for people adopting video blogging?
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@isocialfanz For the people who enjoy reading as much as I do, I've written this book for them. Who am I to decide the medium? The biggest barrier is allowing yourself to accept that people are going to think things about you because you're making your mark. No matter if it's good or bad, they will judge you for daring to make video. Getting past that is tough.

If you could give yourself 1-2 pieces of advice when you first started out, what would they be?
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@awhitcom 1) SHOW more than you tell. 2) Have more conversations in other people's video comments than your own.

Do you have preferred video lengths for different pieces of content? Do you find a certain length to resonate most with your subscribers?
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@getsynap Definitely different lengths for different formats. A lifecasting vlog will go on a little longer when it makes sense (closer to 10 minutes) while a strategy or tip will be a 2-4 minute video ideally. No matter what the length, make good on the promise you give your subscribers and only use the time that will be valuable for them Not too long. Not too short.

Hi Amy, I have started a Blog about trending tech and other topics, I need to know how do you see the idea of utilizing Google Trends as a source of blog topics?
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@techcommodities ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY! You could always pay attention to what trending so you can get the most relevant content out for your audience. This is a great resource. Especially for YouTube.

Thanks Amy! What have been the biggest personal/mental benefits you have experienced from vlogging? How would one best approach vlogging to optimize those benefits?
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@andrewdbass I have becomes a far better communicator than ever in my life. By being able to focus on the camera lens like it's a person I'm talking to over coffee and being the best version of me in that — otherwise awkward — form of communicating, I've learned to tell a story. That's made me better as a person and better yet, a public speaker.

Hi Amy thanks for being here today. What is your daily inspiration?
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@ems_hodge My mom and my beagle. My mom made me believe I could do anything if I want to. My beagle made me want to learn how to make money from home so we could cuddle whenever we want. It's inspired me everyday as an entrepreneur to keep going.

What's your daily routine?
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@bentossell Follow my calendar. Everything I have to do and where I need to be is there. I wake up first for skin care, cardio and coffee. Emails can wait until I'm done with that.
Ben Tossell
Ben Tossell@bentossell · Makerpad.co
What has most surprised you about writing your book?
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@bentossell That I actually enjoyed writing it. I thought it was going to be much more difficult for me as someone who creates video but I guess when you learn how to communicate you can find a way to make it happen in other mediums as well.

@mrindycar Seeing something I made come to life. Like, REAL LIFE! I've never held my own product in my hands. That's been the most extraordinary feeling.

Can you share your export settings from FCP? (Unless it's in the book!) Your video quality is always so good!
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@_adam_barker It has to do with the video files and making sure that they're lined up. We've been filming at 1080p 24 frames per second lately and so my expert settings are aligned with that quality.

@videoin Publish it. Find out if it worked. Make a change on the next one.
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@videoin OR if that answer doesn't work for you, you can use the unlisted feature on a video to share it to a small subset of people to see if they take the CTA or click to watch. If not, then make a change before you go public.

@jacqvon Happiness with who I am and what I've accomplished. If I'm worried about falling behind or not being good enough every day then this is all for nothing. If I can wake up and genuinely be proud of my progress and things I've done, then that's success.

It seems like YouTube is the best channel for a vlog, how do you utilize other platforms to benefit your YouTube metrics?
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@zonozi Respect every platform like they are different because they are. How can you offer every social platform a special opportunity from your vlog that will make them want to watch the final product on your YouTube channel? That's what you should do on every other social network. But starting to vlog on other networks is a good idea as well! You can totally vlog on Snapchat if your audience prefers it.

Hi Amy, I'm sure you have tons of challenges but what has been your memorable challenge?
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@meetatang Exporting my videos in final without wanting to continue to make changes. I could work on all my videos for days, months, forever. But you gotta press publish regularly. Consistently. They won't be perfect. Move on to the next.
Michal Krzak
Michal Krzak@m_krzak · Content Marketer, Entrepreneur
Hi Amy, Congrats :) What do you think about bilingual vloging. I'm living in Poland, so naturally, I would like to find clients there. But I'm also very connected to the English-speaking world, especially people and companies from US and Australia. I'm not sure if it's good to start one channel with English and Polish videos? Maybe subtitles could be an idea?
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@m_krzak Captions are a great way to start with that if you don't want to manage two channels. I recommend that first. But if you're focused on getting business from countries speaking different languages and you have an incredible number of people watching that should have it customized for their language, you can decide then to start a new channel for them. Start with one and test first.

If I'm looking to increase my overall presence and promote my brand online- do I start with a 'daily vlog' or 'value-adding content'?
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@megohkay I think you can do both if you want to. But I recommend putting more into your videos and post less often. Industry standard is 1/week. So make a great video once a week and market the crap out of it so that someone is around for the next one.
Hey, thanks for being here. :) To start with vlogging, or a proper online media channel for that matter, what would be the basic things one would require to sustain and grow? I am interested in film-making. Say, I am starting a web-series on a monthly basis. What are the specifications that I shouldn't miss.
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@esskeyar93 Consistency. You will not survive without it. When no one is watching and when everyone is watching. You need to show up. Plan to show up and you'll be far ahead of the game.
@schmittastic Thanks. So what are your thoughts on the web-series? And, how much does sub-titles affect the reach of an online video?
Amy Schmittauer
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@esskeyar93 You should be worried about making the best experience for your target audience. Subtitles don't make it successful. The content needs to be good to be spread around. It doesn't matter what the web-series is. It just need to be worth sharing.
