Excited to be here. Ask me anything!
Vincenzo Landino@vincenzolandino · Creative Director, Aftermarq
What inspired you to write a book about vlogging?
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@vincenzolandino My community. They asked for it and I showed up for them. They are the driver of everything I do.
Brian Fanzo@isocialfanz · Millennial Speaker & Podcast Host
A book about video? Who are you trying to reach and what do you feel is the biggest barrier for people adopting video blogging?
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@isocialfanz For the people who enjoy reading as much as I do, I've written this book for them. Who am I to decide the medium? The biggest barrier is allowing yourself to accept that people are going to think things about you because you're making your mark. No matter if it's good or bad, they will judge you for daring to make video. Getting past that is tough.
Alex Baker-Whitcomb@awhitcom · Founder of Whitcomb Works
If you could give yourself 1-2 pieces of advice when you first started out, what would they be?
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@awhitcom 1) SHOW more than you tell. 2) Have more conversations in other people's video comments than your own.
Synap@getsynap · Synap Software Labs
Do you have preferred video lengths for different pieces of content? Do you find a certain length to resonate most with your subscribers?
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@getsynap Definitely different lengths for different formats. A lifecasting vlog will go on a little longer when it makes sense (closer to 10 minutes) while a strategy or tip will be a 2-4 minute video ideally. No matter what the length, make good on the promise you give your subscribers and only use the time that will be valuable for them Not too long. Not too short.
TechCommodity.com@techcommodities
Hi Amy, I have started a Blog about trending tech and other topics, I need to know how do you see the idea of utilizing Google Trends as a source of blog topics?
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@techcommodities ABSO-FREAKIN-LUTELY! You could always pay attention to what trending so you can get the most relevant content out for your audience. This is a great resource. Especially for YouTube.
Andrew Bass@andrewdbass · Startup junkie and improving hacker
Thanks Amy! What have been the biggest personal/mental benefits you have experienced from vlogging? How would one best approach vlogging to optimize those benefits?
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@andrewdbass I have becomes a far better communicator than ever in my life. By being able to focus on the camera lens like it's a person I'm talking to over coffee and being the best version of me in that — otherwise awkward — form of communicating, I've learned to tell a story. That's made me better as a person and better yet, a public speaker.
Emily Hodgins@ems_hodge · Community and Marketing, Product Hunt
Hi Amy thanks for being here today. What is your daily inspiration?
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@ems_hodge My mom and my beagle. My mom made me believe I could do anything if I want to. My beagle made me want to learn how to make money from home so we could cuddle whenever we want. It's inspired me everyday as an entrepreneur to keep going.
Ben Tossell@bentossell · Partner https://theupstarters.co/
What's your daily routine?
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@bentossell Follow my calendar. Everything I have to do and where I need to be is there. I wake up first for skin care, cardio and coffee. Emails can wait until I'm done with that.
Ben Tossell@bentossell · Partner https://theupstarters.co/
What has most surprised you about writing your book?
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@bentossell That I actually enjoyed writing it. I thought it was going to be much more difficult for me as someone who creates video but I guess when you learn how to communicate you can find a way to make it happen in other mediums as well.
Meg Kerns@megohkay · CEO/Founder MOKup Media
If I remember correctly the bundle book buy offers go until February 3rd and I'm assuming I can find most of my answers at www.vloglikeaboss.com, correct? Just want to make sure I'm not missing anything! :)
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@megohkay YASSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!! You got my back girl. Thank you!!
Meg Kerns@megohkay · CEO/Founder MOKup Media
@schmittastic Gotta get my "buy" on! We want you in VA!
Andrew Browne@mrindycar · IT Consultant, Aussie I.T. Solutions
Congratulations on your first book! What has been the most exciting thing for you over this past month from vlogging daily?
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@mrindycar Seeing something I made come to life. Like, REAL LIFE! I've never held my own product in my hands. That's been the most extraordinary feeling.
Adam Barker@_adam_barker
Can you share your export settings from FCP? (Unless it's in the book!) Your video quality is always so good!
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@_adam_barker It has to do with the video files and making sure that they're lined up. We've been filming at 1080p 24 frames per second lately and so my expert settings are aligned with that quality.
Douglas Lee Miller@videoin · Sr. Media Strategist
What's the best way to A/B test video content and/or CTAs?
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@videoin Publish it. Find out if it worked. Make a change on the next one.
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@videoin OR if that answer doesn't work for you, you can use the unlisted feature on a video to share it to a small subset of people to see if they take the CTA or click to watch. If not, then make a change before you go public.
Douglas Lee Miller@videoin · Sr. Media Strategist
@schmittastic great idea for user testing video CTAs!
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
Thank you so much everyone! This has been such a wonderful experience along with my big launch day! Now go and vlog like a BOSS!
Tania Akhtar@sonia_jnu · CEO
can you help me how can i post the add?
Jacqueline von Tesmar@jacqvon · Community, Product Hunt ⚡️
What does success look like to you?
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@jacqvon Happiness with who I am and what I've accomplished. If I'm worried about falling behind or not being good enough every day then this is all for nothing. If I can wake up and genuinely be proud of my progress and things I've done, then that's success.
Meg Kerns@megohkay · CEO/Founder MOKup Media
How does it feel to be a PUBLISHED author and leader in the industry? What advice do you have for us peons?
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@megohkay It feels good. Really good! I'm just so proud that I've been able to see some things through that I've always wanted for myself and my community. You HAVE to stop saying peons, girl! You're my friends. :)
Andy Artamonov@andy_artamonov · odin
Is it hard to start blog? Mr daughter want to start one, but afraid 😳 that no one will watch ⌚️...
Amy Schmittauer@schmittastic
@andy_artamonov No one will watch. But then someday someone will. you have to get to that point. It's not easy. it's very hard. But it's totally worth it and it teaches you an incredible amount of responsibility and work ethic.
Andy Artamonov@andy_artamonov · odin
@schmittastic I told her so, but at 6 it's hard not to dance 💃 ))) 😊 thx
