How do you set goals?

Hey, hunters! I believe that goal setting allows you to take control of your life's direction. It provides a benchmark for determining whether you are actually succeeding. I used to set goals with a SMART method. I'm interested in how you set goals. What methods do you use? Are there any specific rules you follow? Do you manage to keep track of achieving your goals?

If I think anything will be beneficial for me in future and I really have to adopt it then i simple write it somewhere where I can see it more often and by seeing it again and again its easy for me to keep it like a goal

First consider what you want to achieve, and then commit to it. Set SMART specific, measureable, attainable, relevant and time-bound) goals that motivate you and write them down to make them feel tangible. Then plan the steps you must take to realize your goal, and cross off each one as you work through them. MaryKayInTouch

I always have trouble remembering what SMART stands for so I just think what I want to achieve, split it into micro-goals (that you can do in a day) and there I go.

I haven't found a way of setting goals, that i'd keep using time after time. I usually set one big goal and when ever i'm in doubt about my actions, i think of the big goal and make decisions by reflecting to it. Right now my work related big goal is to be as helful to our company as possible. -> this leads to different actions on different days.
